A knowledge-based expert systems application in library acquisitions: Monographs

The decision-making process in any environment, including the library, is potentially subjective and arbitrary. The impetus for this research has been to eliminate the discretionary component in vendor selection by designing a quantitative decision-making model. Technically, the model is based on the artificial intelligence concept known as an expert system. The model uses rules provided by the expert, policies of the individual institution, and quantitative decision techniques to assign orders to vendors. Advantages to this knowledge-based model are the following: (1) assurance of quantitative objectivity; (2) efficient allocation of limited resources; (3) improved use of personnel time; (4) creation of a database of vendor price structuring; and (5) usefulness as a training resource.     

Integrated library systems

The development of integrated library systems is discussed. The four major discussion points are (1) initial efforts; (2) network resources; (3) minicomputer-based systems; and (4) beyond library automation. Four existing systems are cited as examples of current systems.

Using Google Forms to track library space usage

This article is a response to the excellent “Using Mobile Technology to Observe Student Study Behaviors and Track Library Space Usage” by Susan Thompson. Thompson reviews the literature regarding user counts on mobile devices and describes the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Library's evaluation of SUMA, Counter+, and CloudOn. After trialing these mobile technologies, CSUSM selected CloudOn. At New York University Abu Dhabi, we use Google Forms to conduct user counts on an iPad and Google Sheets to evaluate these data. We find that Google Forms are easy to set up, modify as necessary, and present the data in easy-to-manipulate spreadsheets.

Using library programming to integrate self-directed learning into a community

Abstract

Shoreline Community College is near Seattle in Washington state, a growing community that has evolving needs. The library at the college planned and implemented events for National Poetry Month to get the students, faculty, and community engaged through activities such as White Board Poetry, Spoken Word Poetry, a Film Showing, and a Haiku Contest. Promotional planning and follow through focused on campus resources, student engagement, and social media.

Play to win! Using games in library instruction to enhance student learning

Research has shown that educational games can have positive impacts on student learning and motivation. The success of a game played in a library instruction class depends on the type of game selected, the development of learning outcomes, and the flexibility of the librarian during class. This article explains the benefits to students and librarians of using games, discusses the development and use of a Jeopardy-style game, and provides practical tips for librarians interested in developing and incorporating games into one-time library instruction sessions.

Topics in library technology: charging systems

Methods of circulation control, using the Newark Charging System as a prototype, are reviewed. Two criteria for a charging system in a university and special library are that it must show both location and due date of materials taken out of the library. The transaction card, charging machine, punched card, and computer are devices designed to speed up conventional procedures. They are described and evaluated according to the aforementioned criteria.     

Linking approval plans and automated library acquisitions systems

This paper will describe the process whereby an approval vendor provides machine-readable records corresponding to books sent to a library automatically and on approval, for loading into the library's automated acquisitions system.
