Just think of all the different conversations we have in one day and compare that with how much written communication we do in one day. Which do we do more of?. In our daily lives most of us speak more than we write,yet many English teachers still spend the majority of class time on reading and writing practice, almost ignoring speaking and listening skills: Do you think this is a good balance? If the goal of our teaching English is truly to enable our students to communicate in English,then speak- ing skills should be taught and practiced in the classroom.

A Comparative Study on NP-trace between English and Chinese

Many scholars have contributed to the research of Empty Categories since 1980s; however, most of them just concentrated on PRO, pro and variable, with little attention paid to NP-trace. Under the theoretical framework of GB theory, this paper will make a comparative study on NP-trace between English and Chinese from the aspect of Binding theory, the restrictions on NP-movement, and the motivation for NP-movement, in order to find out whether the NP-trace in Chinese is the same as or different from that in English, the result of which may indicate some syntactic features of the two languages.

I have been cross-sitiching on and off since the late 1970's when I was in middle school. What drew me to learn this handcraft was the simplicity of the art yet the intricate designs that one could create. Learning to corss-stitch is very simple since the basic stitch is making "x's" with colored thread on a piece of fabric. I enjoy the ability to easily take my craft with me on trips for something to do when there is a rest period.The first pieces that I corss-stitched were small single character designs that I was able to make into bookmarks or put into very small frames for on top of a desk. The finished fronts on these pieces turned out looking really good, but the backs looked like an explosion of threads. As I cross-stitched more, I began to learn and understand how to stitch my "x's" so that the backs of my cross-stitched pieces looked almost as neat as the fronts.Now people look at the backs of my pieces and admire how neatly my color changes(start and end of threads).

Politeness Language in English and Chinese

Politeness is a very important topic in modern linguistics. With the development of the study of linguistics, a lot of people lay the emphasis on the study of politeness language. It can be observed in all languages and cultures as a social phenomenon, which plays an important role in individuals’ linguistic behavior. But due to different culture, different politeness principles and other reasons, different peo ple have different understandings about the definition of politeness, and they deal with politeness in different ways. Appreciation in Chinese is not used frequently. Peo ple do not often say "thank you" to their families or friends. Appreciation in English can be used among families, friends, and colleagues and so on. How Should Oral Skills be Taught in the English Language Classroom

There is general agreement today that the communicative approach to the teaching and learning of English is the correct one and that we learn English for the purpose of communicating with other English-speakers. However, this is a comparatively recent development. This paper begins with an historical overview outlining the origins of the communicative approach in Europe and the United States and noting that they arrived at a consensus for entirely different historical reasons. In China English replaced Russian as the most important foreign language a generation ago but even then the emphasis was on receptive skills. The thorny question of authenticity is then discussed. While everyone agrees that in theory authenticity is a key consideration there is considerably less agreement on how to convert theory into practice. Finally the paper goes on to note how recent practice has abandoned the teacher-centered approach in favor of the learner-centered approach and the exercise-based approach in favor of the task-based approach, The task-based approach emphasizes integrated as opposed to individual skills acquisition. Examples of integrated tasks are given in the Appendix.
