Other is an important concept in Lacan’s psychology theory, which plays a critical role in a subject’s identity formation. The formation of a subject’s self-identity is based on other, initially its mother, the absence of the other will cause the subject’s identity loss and the reconstruction on the new other. Therefore, this article analyzes the main subject Florens’ identity loss and her identity reconstruction by applying Lacan’s concept of other.  相似文献

Invisible Man is both a historical biography of the black man in America and an anguish process of man’s quest for identity in the dehumanizing and absurd society of racial discrimination. Personal weakness of the protagonist: his effort to evade his past functions as the last straw leading to his invisibility. Therefore, this paper tries to analyze the cause of the invisibility of the protagonist by further textual analysis in an attempt to reveal how a nameless African American reflects the existential crisis of modern man.  相似文献

How do students draw on texts read in class to explore and make sense of the world? How does role-play open up the possibilities of utilising these resources, remaking them for their own purposes? How does play, as Vygotsky suggests, enable students to achieve more? And how does being in role change the character of social relations in the classroom, enabling students to shed new light on their lives, their experiences. This essay focuses close attention on two role-plays, both involving the same pair of 11th-grade students from a school in Ramallah. The role-plays arose out of, and enabled the students to explore, literary texts that they had been studying in class: Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. The article argues that what the students accomplished in this work is complex and needs to be understood in context. Through this account, the essay seeks to challenge those (currently fashionable) models of pedagogy that are insufficiently attentive to the histories, identities and interests of particular learners.  相似文献

This study tested the degree to which the perceived appropriateness of parents’ negative relational disclosures moderated the association between such disclosures and young adult children’s feelings of being caught between their parents. Participants included 241 young adult children who completed online surveys. Whereas negative relational disclosures received from both mother and father positively predicted children feeling caught, the perceived appropriateness of those disclosures inversely predicted their feelings of being caught. After controlling for divorce status, the positive association between negative relational disclosures and feelings of being caught depended upon the perceived appropriateness of the disclosures for fathers but not for mothers.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the destructive effect of lawlessness on Dorian Gray in The Picture of Dorian Gray and Kurtz in Heart of Darkness.Under the protection of his portrait,Dorian Gray is lost in his seeking for pleasure and corrupts from a good angel into a vicious devil. As an oppressor in Africa,Kurtz can make his law and can do anything without punishment and is thus destroyed by his insatiable desire for ivory. The corruption of Dorian Gray and Kurtz shows that without observation, man may expose his evil side to an extreme.  相似文献

Abstract

Joseph Conrad’s ‘The secret sharer’ has often been associated with what can be called initiation stories. However, in this article I argue that Conrad’s text is more than that. It can, I suggest, be read as an allegory of the inaccessibility to reveal the essence of being in command, being in education, and also the inaccessibility of the essence of the meaning of the text itself. It keeps its secret by allegorically staging alternative readings. This inaccessibility gives rise to a feeling of strangeness, of the uncanny, that must be faced in order to pass through the initiation into the unknown that all the possible allegorical meanings of the text produce. In other words, ‘The secret sharer’ has an educational value that goes beyond the act of merely using it to exemplify a certain type of initiation. In this way I connect Conrad’s text to the themes of strangeness and the stranger and show how they mutually can involve a reading of education and literature as two distinct discourses of learning.  相似文献

As leading figures in English literature during the Neoclassical period,Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift both showed great concern with the nature of man and his place in the Great Chain of Being. They both emphasized the irreplaceable role of reason in guiding man in his self-positioning in the universe, and pointed out the tragic, pathetic,or detestable fall man was vulnerable to in case of violating the law of nature.Pope attached more importance to setting right man’ s position as against God and beast, while Swift showed more interest in the chain of being within the human society;Pope kept warning man against his pride and possible ruin as a result of his ambition, while Swift worried more about man’ s degradation due to loss of reason.  相似文献

Recent research suggests that social cognition may play a role in the connections among gendered experiences of teasing within the grade school classroom. Within the framework of social-cognitive developmental theory, this qualitative research study investigates how gender may influence young children’s experiences and perception of teasing within the context of peer relationships. The present study explored the role gender plays in 89 Canadian children’s (4–9 years of age, 39 girls, 50 boys) perceptions of peer teasing through participants’ drawings and accompanying narratives. Results indicate that gender may help shape girls’ and boys’ perceptions of peer teasing in the classroom and suggest the need for educators to build a school culture of kindness, peace, and compassion to enhance children’s social-emotional lives.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Research on teacher emotion regulation is typically conducted by outsiders and focuses on how emotion is regulated. This self-study was conducted by a practicing teacher to explore the lived experience of teacher emotion regulation and the many influences that inspire the need for such regulation. Throughout a 14-week semester, daily “in-the-moment” recordings of emotion were collected as they arose, and analyzed weekly. With a critical friend, further analysis was conducted to explore the genesis of the emotion as well as the response and possible alternatives. We believe that understanding the experience of the emotion is possibly more important than how it is regulated. Through reflection, this teacher began to resolve deeper issues that had evoked negative emotions, which shifted her approach to difficult situations and reduced the amount of negative emotions experienced. We conclude that the research on emotion regulation should focus on understanding the underlying issue triggering the emotion than on controlling the emotions displayed.  相似文献

This paper reports on young women students’ participation in their undergraduate mathematics degree programme: their gendered trajectory is characterized in terms of their being both ‘invisible’ in the dominant university mathematics community and yet ‘special’ in their self‐conception. It draws on data collected from a three‐year longitudinal project investigating students’ experiences of undergraduate mathematics at two comparable traditional universities in England. Specifically, students’ narratives are interpreted as providing insights into their defensive investments in their particular ways of participating. An interpretive feminist perspective is used to claim that these young women are involved in the ongoing redefining of the gendering of participation in mathematics, and conveys how they manage to choose mathematics, and achieve in university mathematics, whilst in many respects adhering to everyday views of femininity.

No one could see [the witch] Serafina from where she was; but if she wanted to see any more, she would have to leave her hiding place. …There was one thing she could do; she was reluctant because it was desperately risky, and it would leave her exhausted; but it seemed there was no choice. It was a kind of magic she could work to make herself unseen. True invisibility was impossible, of course: this was mental magic, a kind of fiercely held modesty that could make the spell worker not invisible but simply unnoticed. Holding it with the right degree of intensity, she could pass through a crowded room, or walk beside a solitary traveller, without being seen. (Pullman, 1998 Pullman, P. 1998. American Transcendentalism aroused New Englanders to individualism enlightenment. Kate Chopin’ s The Awakening, un doubtedly voices female quest for identity. The novel was banned by the force of social conventions, for the sociological role it played in form of literature, negotiating female professional identity, social role identity and sexual identity. This treatise analyzes the awakening of women conscious regarding identity and contradiction it brings therefore with social conventions, and argues the inevitable fate of the sex to self-isolation and self-destruction is caused by the prudery conventions. It maintains to review the sociological function of the piece and reconstruct interdisciplinary perspective of literature and sociology, appeal harmony between two sexes.  相似文献

"Theory of Epiphany" James Joyce used in his literature is to explain an aesthetic process of the stages of artistic creation. Virginia Woolf’s conception of "moments of being", later develop into the stream of consciousness, is considered as the major techniques in her short stories. In this paper, the major features of the two techniques are compared and contrasted with reference to Joyce’s early fictions and Woolf’s The Mark on the Wall.  相似文献

The protagonist in Invisible Man experiences many painful incidents and gradually grows into a mature individual. He undergoes the transformation from with self-oriented ambition to racial-oriented ambition, and then to self-oriented ambition in a new sense. The process of his transformation can be seen from his changing contemplations on words by his grandfather. The process of his transformation is also a process of pursuing his identity.  相似文献
