Hawthorne was a great writer who reminds us of human limitations. He called his tales "allegories of the heart." Hawthorne’s allegories are stories of how pride and isolation frustrate our capacity for love and sympathy.Isolation or "alienation" is Hawthorne’s principal theme and problem, and loss of contact with reality is the ultimate penalty he envisions. Therefore, reading Hawthorne’s stories is a journey to explore human being’s evil.  相似文献

This thesis proposes a Romanticist approach to one of Eliot’s early poems.By putting the poetic subject between the classical and the modern settings,it ventures an attempt to discuss the poetic subject as a Romanticist seeker for love and mean ing.On the one hand, the subject craves for love and understanding from the feminine counterpart, who seems to represent the classical deal of love and meaning. On the other hand,he is stuck in his modern reality where love and meaning are rendered im possible. Thus,Eliot gives a remarkable depiction of the modern dilemma.  相似文献

William Wordsworth was England’s Poet Laureate. He is the Romantic poet who is most often described as a"nature"write, and he is always sensitive to every subtle change in the world around him. In my opinion, his love for nature is boundless. To him, nature acts as a substitute for imaginative and intellectual engagement with the development of embodied human beings in their diverse circumstances. It’s nature that gives him knowledge and strength. In this paper, I want to narrow Wordsworth’s conception of nature, and then we can find the harmony in the community of men and nature.  相似文献

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play of love that reflects the sharp conflict between humanism and feudalism in the sixteenth century English society, which finds expression in the dispute between Hermia and her father Egeus on her marriage and Hermia’s bold rebellion against the feudalistic parental tyranny. The final success of the lovers in their struggle for the freedom to decide their marriage not only embodies Shakespeare’s humanist ideal but also reflects his firm belief that humanism would inevitably triumph over feudalism.  相似文献

It was a tradition in Elizabethan time that love poems were written to praise lovers’fidelity, but Donne boldly broke the tradition and chose faithlessness as the theme in some of his poems. The paper analyzes a series of images in Donne’s love po ems to present the theme of faithlessness and then it discusses the reasons why Donne deals with the theme.Faithlessness in Don ne’s love poems can not be interpreted only as Donne’s doubt about love. The discussion of love’s fidelity in his poems also comes from Donne’s sensibility about instability of the world and his perturbation of religious belief.  相似文献

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning, yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original, but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later, based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary, just like the fragments of a vessel, responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.  相似文献

The elements of Sartre’s existentialism are shown in Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery: The world abounds with absurdities and bitterness; people can be the hell to each other; an individual has a free choice and act, but should be responsible for his or her behavior. Shirley discusses the problem of the existence of an individual in the complex web of society and environment in The Lottery, just as Sartre in his works of existentialism.  相似文献
