The French Lieutenant‘s Woman, written by John Fowles, is one of the most successful postmodern novels in contemporary English literature. This article is attempted to focus on its special narrative art and make a deeper penetration into its theme. In the novel, the master storyteller uses old writing tricks along with his own new ones originally and effectively. By criticizing and reshaping the conventions of earlier fiction, Fowles creates a new old story and a postmodern Victorian woman, which no Victorian writers can ever bring out.  相似文献

It was a tradition in Elizabethan time that love poems were written to praise lovers’fidelity, but Donne boldly broke the tradition and chose faithlessness as the theme in some of his poems. The paper analyzes a series of images in Donne’s love po ems to present the theme of faithlessness and then it discusses the reasons why Donne deals with the theme.Faithlessness in Don ne’s love poems can not be interpreted only as Donne’s doubt about love. The discussion of love’s fidelity in his poems also comes from Donne’s sensibility about instability of the world and his perturbation of religious belief.  相似文献

The novel Sons and Lovers, which is Lawrence’s best acclaimed work, is of autobiographic air. It is called the best representation of Sigmund Freud’s "Oedipus Complex"theory by critics, though Lawrence denied having read Freud before writing the novel. However, it can shed new light on the novel when read in a different point of view. Paul’s road to become a real man can not be separated from his mother, Miriam and Clara, who is Paul’s first and second loves respectively. This article will analyze the novel in feminist perspective and concentrate on the three women’s sacrifice to Paul’s growth in a man-centered society, in hope of better understanding the intension of the novel.  相似文献

"A Farewell to Arms" is one of the most famous works written by Ernest Hemingway. It displays two main interwaving themes of war and love by the narration of a young soldier ’ s experience and his love affairs with a beautiful nurse in the first world war.The novel reflects the author ’ s strong hatred of war and exposes that the war is the real root of the couple ’ s tragedy in this novel and the "Lost Generation " in the real society.  相似文献

"Ambivalence" is a word which entered the language only in this century, the feminism reflected in Pride and Prejudice is ambivalent. Not only was Jane Austen’s novel composed almost 200 years ago,but in it she seems to attack love-as-attraction,a notion presupposed in the idea of emotional ambivalence, which is reflected from Austen’ subconciousness, from the main themes of the novel, from the characters’ modelling and from four marriages in the novel, which also boasts the significance of studying ambivalent feminism in literature. In addition,it manifests the limitations and awakening of feminist consciousness. The thesis also applies the influence of Jane Austen’s ambivalent feminism in the field of literature.  相似文献

With the progressing development of economic globalization and increasingly fierce international competition, we need groups of high-quality innovative talents to enhance the overall scientific and technological innovation capacity and competitiveness while also improving the visibility of students on the international stage. Accordingly, the cultivated talents should develop a more open vision, more novel awareness, and a more proactive learning attitude. They will be more sensitive to new things, have stronger practical capacities, and have the courage to break through routines to conduct their work more innovatively. Therefore, we have established a talent cultivation philosophy of "profound foundation, wide range, internationalization, and value innovation" in the physics education and have explored the extra-curricular learning and development pattern of physics students in order to promote a well-rounded development.  相似文献

This essay discusses the matricidal tradition in western culture and how Phyllis Nagy’s Butterfly Kiss(1994)rewrites this tradition and undermines the patriarchy. It suggests Nagy’s play questions the common dishonest plays at that time, which fea?tures mother and daughter friendly with each other, and avoids the prevalent antagonism between mother and daughter in the real society. It considers how the play addresses this issue of maternal hatred and how Lily’s reconstruction reveals her act of matricide is actually a loving act coming from the desire to save her mother. The essay argues that Lily’s matricide rewrites the matricidal tra?dition in western culture and through accounting the oppression they suffer in the patriarchal society, the mothers and daughters in the play hope for a real connection that involves intimacy, love and nurturance.  相似文献

Greimas’s Semiotic Square is a new approach in analyzing literary works.Based on Sassure and Jacnson’s claim on binary opposition,Gereimas extends it to four actants and adds contradictory relationships.By assign meanings to the four actants,an analysis of the complicated relationship between the roles in a text can be made and a revelation of the theme of the text can be realized.Previous studies of this novel take it as an excellent work revealing loneliness and isolation is thought to be the basic condition of human existence.Other study covers the effects of the unrequited love.Quiet differently, this paper tries to interpret this novel by Greimas’semiotic square and thereby revealing the widely accepted theme of this novel that isolation and loneliness is the final destiny of human being in modern society.  相似文献

Inhabited by women with male characteristics and men possessing female features, the Dunnet Landing in Sarah Orne Jewett’s masterpiece The Country of the Pointed Firs is depicted as a harmonious land of beauty, from which Jewett’s preference of androgyny is fully expressed. In this novel, androgyny is used as a means by Jewett to achieve her feministic idea of the equality between men and women and that neither of the sex has prejudice upon the other in this combination. Through a detailed textual analysis, this paper reveals the androgyny elements in this novel and discusses about the possibility of androgyny as a way out for feminism.  相似文献

In the novel Tess of the D’urbervilles,Tess is successfully depicted. She is portrayed as a brave girl,hard-working,beautiful and innocent.Alec represents a brutal and destructive force, which triggers Tess’s tragedy.Angle’s inveterate old-fashioned prejudices made him relentlessly abandon Tess.Yet what Hardy tries to show is that the disintegration of rural economy in England brought about by the intrusion of capitalist relations as well as the hypocritical morality of the time are the obvious causes of Tess’s tragedy.Meanwhile,Hardy also attacks the injustice of the law.In the novel,he believes a woman is helpless in the hands of fate and Tess is trapped in the web of fate. Her tragedy is fated and inevitable.  相似文献
