Eugene A. Nida is an influential translation theoretician with great research achievements. The functional equivalence theory which is the core of his translation theories lays a solid foundation for the modern translation. However, there also exist some limitations in it. It should be dialectically analyzed to find its contributions and limitations.

In recent years,foreign films have been introduced into China,which have a tremendous impact on people’s social life.As a major tool for obtaining information and enjoying entertainment,film subtitle translation is becoming increasingly important.Meanwhile,the English level and appreciation ability of domestic audience is continuously improving with the change of the times,and their demand and requirement for subtitle translation are also improving.Nowadays,there are still many immature parts in sub?title translation,and the theory in China is relatively deficient.Therefore,the subtitle translation level of film needs to be rose.The translator constantly improves the translation ability by using translation theories and skills.Based on the theory of functional equiv?alence,this thesis translates the subtitle of the film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,Missouri.Firstly,this paper briefly introduces the development of the film subtitle translation and the film.Secondly,it introduces the translation theories and skills applied in translation practice,making a particular analysis in combination with specific practical cases.Finally,the translator makes a sum?mary for the translation process.The translator hopes that through the translation practice,some attempts can be made for future re?search in subtitle translation.

On Implicit Information Translation of Shakespeare’ s Works from the Perspective of Relevance Theory:In the Case of Zhu’ s Translation and Liang’ s Translation

The Relevance Theory put forward by Sperber and Wilson not only gives rise to a new research on pragmatics, but also provides a new theoretic foundation for other disciplines. Gutt applies the theory to translation and gives a relevance-theoretic account of translation. The relevance-theoretic communicative model provides rational explanation for existence of the implicit information. The appropri ate treatment of the implicit information is consistent with readers’ cognitive environment and expectation. Human communication de pends on not only the text, but also the inferential context. The adequate contextual effect is derived from the correct judgment and infer ence of the implicit information in communication. Therefore, the translator should match the original author’ s intention with target text readers’ expectation to make sure that they yield adequate contextual effects with appropriate processing efforts. Implicitness is one of the features of Shakespeare’ s works. It is more demanding for the translators to catch and transfer to the target readers the implicit information. Zhu Shenghao and Liang Shiqiu, the two famous translators adopt different translation strategies to deal with the implicit information in the works.     

Study on the Translation of Puns in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland from the Perspective of the Functional Equivalence Theory

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a world-famous masterpiece in children’s literature.The adventure stories in the novel deeply attract the child readers in different countries in the world.The use of puns in the work adds to its aesthetic value.In China,many scholars have translated it.The research topic is the application of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence in the pun translation in children’s literature work Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the degree of equivalence in Wu Juntao’s translation.The person who does the research has read the original work and the translator Wu Juntao’s translation of this book,analyzed the translation of puns in the book,read the relevant journal articles on the theory of functional equivalence and thought about the academic views in them.On the basis of text reading,translation analysis and reference analysis,the following conclusion has been made:According to the basic points in the theory,in the work,Wu Juntao’s translation of the puns has basically achieved the equivalence between the original text and the target text in readers’responses,language style and language meaning.

The Twilight of Feminism? Stephenie Meyer’s Saga and the Contradictions of Contemporary Girlhood

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga has achieved extraordinary popularity and scholars have interrogated the nature of its appeal from a variety of perspectives. Its popularity raises questions because in many ways it mirrors romantic fictions from the 1960s and 1970s. Such fictions have been read by critics as expressions of female anger and frustration at their lack of power in relationships and in society—as stories of revenge and appropriation. Yet it is often stated that girls today can compete and succeed in their own terms and there are many powerful, emancipated fictional heroines. For these reasons, girls’ enthusiasm for a romance like Twilight is initially difficult to understand. There is, however, a well-developed literature on girls and girls’ education which problematises their apparent empowerment and demonstrates that although girls have opportunities denied to previous generations, they are subject to intense and insidious forms of patriarchal control. This article examines Twilight in the light of this literature. It focuses on the imperative to conform to norms of female beauty and the growth of self-harm as a defining characteristic of female identity. These are explored through the examination of two tropes in Twilight: the repeated use of the beauty makeover and the repeated use of what Tania Modleski called ‘the disappearing heroine’ in her analysis of Harlequin romances of the 1960s and 1970s. I conclude that one reason for Twilight’s exceptional success may be its capacity to provide fantasy resolutions to some of the intense conflicts and contradictions girls face growing up in the twenty-first century.     

A Study on the Tendencies for Film Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Hall’s High and Low Context Theory

In recent years, more and more western films have been introduced into China. With its coming, quite a few people have tried translating the subtitles to help those unfamiliar with foreign languages better understand the films. Some of their works are good. At the same time, some people have done research concerning FST to successfully put forward some strategies and methods to help those film subtitle translators. They see into FST from different perspectives such as the Skopostheory, the Functional Equivalence theory and the Relevance Theory. However, few people tried researching FST from a cultural perspective.The author decides to probe into FST from an entirely new perspective. In this paper, the author introduces Hall's High and Low Context theory and puts forward four tendencies in FST.

This paper analyzes Nida’s theory of translation,also his system of priorities.The paper uses examples to illustrate the application of Nida’s four priorities in the practice of English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation and concludes that we can apply the system to help the receptors of second language and source language to have the closest response.
