聚合关系对英语词汇教学的启示

在一种语言系统中,词汇之间的关系是非常重要的,它可以帮助加深学习者对目标词汇的感知印象,使之尽快地进入长时记忆,并灵活运用。在大学英语词汇教学中,应该鼓励学生去分析、研究词汇之间的关系,聚合关系理论为我们的英语词汇教学提供了一个理论框架,能帮助我们更好地发现英语词汇的特点,同时也能够为英语词汇教学提供很多有益的启示。论文从词汇的聚合关系出发,通过讨论上下义关系、整体与部分关系、同义关系和反义关系对英语词汇习得的影响,提出我们在大学英语的词汇教学中,应该充分重视词汇的纵聚合关系,从而增强学生对词的涵义和选择的敏感性,提高学生的词汇习得能力。

提出了近几年高等数学教学上出现的一些问题,主要是课程内容设计、课堂教学方法以及成绩考评等方面的问题。为了更好的服务教学,针对这些问题作者进一步提出了解决方法。

EVALUATING AN INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM TRAINING INSTITUTE IN GERIATRICS: IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING TEAMWORK THEORY AND PRACTICE

Changes occurring in both health care and higher education systems in the U.S. suggest the need for the development of innovative model programs for interdisciplinary team training. This article reports on the development and evaluation of one such program: an interdisciplinary team training institute in geriatrics and primary care sponsored by the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center in 1999. Key principles underlying the design of program content are summarized. Evaluation data analyzed include information on attendees' backgrounds and teamwork experience, and an assessment of the most important and least important insights gained from participation. Specific ratings for each session include relevance and knowledge attainment. Major observations and recommendations include the combination of theory and practice, a focus on current and cutting edge issues, the importance of educational marketing research, and implications for program evaluation.     

SOME UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TELEVISION AND SOME IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING

The author attempts to distinguish those unique educational characteristics of television which separate it from other media and which have implications for teaching and learning: distributional and social characteristics, control characteristics, and symbolic (audiovisual) characteristics. The discussion is based on published surveys and on research carried out by the author and his colleagues at the Open University. Ten key issues are identified which relate to the question of how people learn from television, as distinct from other media.

CREDENTIALS NEEDED FOR TEACHING BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Biology and chemistry instructors at 50 institutions within th North Carolina Community College System were surveyed concerning the types of courses they teach, the diversity of students in their courses, their own academic preparation, how they would have altered their academic preparation for their current position, their preceived value of secondary school teaching in their current position, and additional comments about preparation for teaching in the community college. Personel officers at these institutions were surveyed on degrees they require for hiring biology and chemistry instructors, additional qualifications they seek in instructors, and whether they believe secondary school teaching experience to be of benefit for someone considering a community college teaching position.

Major concerns in hiring an instructor are a stong academic preparation in the teaching field and a second major or minor in a related science field. An additional concern is the ability to address the special needs of the diverse student population found in the community college setting. The instructors suggest that programs in science education can help teachers improve their instructional techniques, and 7 6% of the instructors who have taught in secondary schools indicate that this experience had been beneficial in their community college teaching.     

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MAJOR RESEARCH PARADIGMS AND THEIR METHODOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS RESEARCH

Recently in special needs research qualitative methods have been advocated and utilised. Unfortunately, confusion exists concerning the methods of investigation and the researchers’ paradigmatic assumptions. We argue that it is the paradigmatic lens of the researcher which guide the whole research process rather than the methods employed. In this paper the three major paradigms currently operating in educational research will be described and the distinction between “method” and “paradigm” will be clarified. Although the issues raised here are applicable to all strands of educational research, the purpose of this paper is to guide special needs researchers in identifying their own assumptions and examining for themselves the implications of choices about research methodology based on those assumptions.
