A report of a conference of leaders, both men and women, in the fields of secular education, religious education, community and social work, and business and professional life. In the group are Protestant, Catholic, Jew and those having less formal attachment to organized religion—the Ethical Culturist, the New Thought adherent, the pure humanist and the scoffer at man‐made schemes for personal and social salvation.

UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT IN EASTERN EUROPE∗

For the future, academic management training programmes should focus upon needs expressed at institutional level without reference to national co‐ordinators; however, some national networks could and should be exploited in support of institutional objectives. A distance learning project for university managers would benefit from co‐operation with local expertise. Where this is unavailable, distance education should first concentrate upon building up a local organization for distance education so that costs will not be prohibitively high. Present funding schemes favour academic rather than administrative/management links; therefore, trainers must adopt imaginative approaches in order to create opportunities. Amongst these are management training linked to academic visits and management and administrative training tied to industrial liaison and brokerage.

     

MUSIC IN THE SUNDAY SCHOOL∗

One task facing adult religious education is to become more intentional in understanding homosexuality and homosexual persons, to the end that these persons might find religious groups to be more open and accepting and that religious persons of good will might become more articulate allies of homosexual persons in the larger society. The paper proposes a curricular design built upon Maria Harris's model for “fashioning a people.” The proposal is intended to be a framework by which professional religious educators are enabled to evaluate existing resources and to plan curricular strategies in light of their own theological understandings.

     

INSTRUMENTS AND ENDS IN SPIRITUAL WORLD CONQUEST∗

It is the conviction of the editor that there is a theological basis for a theory of Christian education. In some writings, this theological basis may be hidden or be an aspect of which one is not conscious. But today, as theological reformulations continue to challenge us, theories of Christian education also have undergone certain changes. The emphasis on kerygma among both Catholic and Protestant educators is an illustration of this

INSTITUTIONAL SELF‐EVALUATION IN ENGLISH HIGHER EDUCATION∗

The article explains the techniques and the use of institutional self‐assessments in the evaluation of higher education insitutions in England by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. It also evokes the use of performance indicators in such assessments. A strong link exists, in the United Kingdom, between the results of institutional evaluations and level of funding.
