At the close of the 19th century,American fiction underwent a transi-tion from its romantic tradition to a critical examination of the grimrealities of American capitalism.The Gilded Age was then followed by arapid development of capitalistic industrialization.There was few literarywritings dealing with the underprivileged people in the pit.Some Ameri-can writers piped a rather feeble note,but Jack London played a verydifferent tone in the national symphony.He introduced fresh themes andvigorous characters into the writing of that day. DEVELOPING PEDAGOGICAL KNOWLEDGE THROUGH TEACHER‐WRITTEN CASE STORIES

Abstract

With more children spending the greater part of their waking hours in preschool settings today than they did years ago, teachers play an even more critical role in providing daily literacy experiences that many children of earlier generations received at home. The article focuses on the critical role that preschool teachers play in supporting children's early literacy development and presents an instructional framework to help guide early literacy teaching. The framework is based on Vygotsky's learning theory, which emphasizes the nature and importance of social interactions in instruction, particularly between adult and child. We present activity‐embedded assessments that preschool teachers can use to observe and document children's emerging literacy concepts and skills, and describe key teaching actions that scaffold learning of new concepts. In closing, we offer five principles to guide preschool teachers in planning and implementing appropriate activities to promote young children's literacy development. Sample documentation forms are included in the appendices.     

AGE DIFFERENCES IN EFFICIENCY OF READING COMPREHENSION FROM PRINTED VERSUS COMPUTER‐DISPLAYED TEXT

Computer technology has become a tremendous aid in examining the aging process as it relates to reading by allowing researchers to measure and control processing time. But is the computer a passive player in the study of reading and aging? Are we overlooking interactions between computers and participants using them? This study compared two types of computer presentation (investigator‐paced and self‐paced by the reader) to reading from the printed page. Older adults were most efficient in their reading comprehension when reading from the printed page, while young adults were most efficient from computer‐paced text. Although reading is a highly practiced skill for both young and old adults, the computer method of presentation is much less familiar to old adults. An overestimation of age differences with misleading findings may occur if computers are routinely used to study age differences in reading comprehension.

NATHAN AND DAVID IN II SAMUEL 12:1–13: AN ALTERNATIVE TEXT WITH COMMENTARY AND IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING

I am honored to give the opening address on the conference theme which deals with 100 years of Jewish education in North America. The topic of this session, “From Sunday School to Day School,” suggests that Jewish education has moved from a one-day-a-week enterprise to a full-time system of education. While there has been significant movement in this direction during the last half of the past 100-year period, this trend has to be placed in proper historical, religious, cultural and social perspective.

爱国主义教育是学校德育的主要内容,在中小学加强爱国主义教育,对于振奋民族精神,增强民族凝聚力,激发学生为将来建设和保卫祖国而读书的使命感,具有十分重要的意义。多年来,我们遵循着“认知—激情—明理—行动”的规律加强爱国主义教育,增强了爱国主义教育的实效。 认知 要对初中学生进行爱国主义教育,必须让他们知道我们国家的历史。要使他们知道古老而文明的中国的古代文明史,也要使他们知道鸦片战争以来中国人民的耻辱史、斗争史、创业史和建设史。还要让他们知道具有中国特色的社会主义政治、经济、文化的基本国情。 应该让他们知道中华人民共和国国旗、国徽的含意,懂得宪法及宪法所赋予公民的权利和义务。此外,还要使其知道青春是人生的黄金时代,要十分珍惜和爱护,努力使自己成才,准备报效祖国和人民。
