Dialogue—Missing in Action Competence: A Cultural Historical Activity Theory Approach in a Botswana School

An in-depth case study on children's participation in environmental management activities in a primary school in Botswana was undertaken, drawing on cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) and the action competence model. This research revealed that due to a lack of dialogue between teachers and children, teachers tended to view children's participation in environmental management activities in a very limited way. Because of their culturally and historically formed views of environmental education, teachers wanted children to pick up litter, and this was the primary environmental education concern they had. Children, on the other hand, identified sanitation management in the school toilets as their primary environmental management concern. Opening up dialogue between children and teachers led to new forms of participation for children, enhancing their action competence development.     

A Law of Physics in the Classroom: The Case of Ohm’s Law

Difficulties in learning Ohm’s Law suggest a need to refocus it from the law for a part of the circuit to the law for the whole circuit. Such a revision may improve understanding of Ohm’s Law and its practical applications. This suggestion comes from an analysis of the history of the law’s discovery and its teaching. The historical materials this paper provides can also help teacher to improve students’ insights into the nature of science.     

The Missing of Emotional Feelings in the Translation of Ci Works——A Comparison between Yulingling and Its Translation

Yulinling is a famous piece of Ci by Liu Yong of the Song Dynasty.It is one long-cherished classical in lamenting the sorrow of departure.The author pictures a gloomy scene of separation:the cold autumn,the long corridor,the misty sea and the lonely boat,all the scenes depicting the sorrow and unwillingness of the separation between the two who are in deep love.The translator translated it into Eng lish in order to express his depressive feelings but he did not convey the depressive meaning of the original Ci in full extend.He lost some of the intentional feelings of the original in his translation.Through the comparison between Yulingling and its translation,the paper dis cusses the missing of emotional feelings in the translation of Ci works.

The Introduction of the ‘Corso di Diploma Universitario’—A Retrospective

In this retrospective we place the introduction of the ‘Corso di Diploma Universi-tario‘ (CDU) in the context of the engineering education in Europe at the beginning of the 1990s. The idea to harmonize the formation of engineers among the countries adhering to the European Union (EU) was still valid. By 1 January 1993 the ‘four freedoms’, free movement of goods, capital, services and people within the EU was to be introduced. In order for an engineer to work in another EU country his formation should be of the same quality as that given to his peers in the host country. In particular, ‘Brussels’ hoped for two types of formation in all EU countries, a practical one dispensed by institutions like Fachhochschulen and a more scientific one given by Technical Universities. (This dichotomy is alternatively known as short-and long-term formation).

Italy decided to form both types of engineers in the same institutions. We look at the Italian project and the first years after its inception from outside the country and attempt a conclusion after a period of five years.     

Using the Internet for Communicative Learning Activities in Kindergarten: The Case of the “Shapes Planet”

With the widespread use of the internet, more and more children get acquainted with its various uses at a young age while an increasing number of teachers are designing learning activities that utilize various internet services. Toward this direction, teachers need practical examples of pedagogically verified learning activities. This paper presents an experimental case study of a learning activity meant for teaching preschoolers geometric concepts, which uses communication tools from the internet. The activity constitutes a developmentally appropriate adaptation of a successful model, known as “Monster Exchange”, to kindergarten. The paper presents the proposed adaptation, the experimental findings regarding the errors children mad, the difficulties they encountered, and finally, the drawings that children produced, with the aim of evaluating the appropriateness and the learning value of the activity.
