This article describes the rationale, methodology, and relevancy of research on themes of self-construction and self-integration in the narratives of second generation Korean American young adults. It also outlines the philosophical perspective on research as a constructive paradigm that understands reality as consisting of the meanings people imbue into their experiences according to their particular sociocultural contexts. Lastly, as a co-constructor of reality, the researcher conducted ethnographic interviews and participant observation among these young adults, attempting to describe their internalized voices, authorities, and values, to explore their construction of self, and to examine the role of the Korean American church in this process.  相似文献

This article details the work of the Birmingham Initiative, a Methodist inspired, ecumenical research project that operated in Birmingham, in the West Midlands of the United Kingdom between 1995 and 1999. As the Christian Education Development Officer employed by this project, the author undertook doctoral research among twenty-six inner-city, Black majority churches from Methodist, Baptist Anglican, and Reformed Church traditions. One of the central aims of the research was to create the first African-centered Black Christian Education of Liberation for the British context. The major outcome of this research was the creation of the first practical Black Christian education curriculum in Britain, entitled Growing into Hope.  相似文献

If we take seriously cultural or neo‐Marxian theories of periodicity, it becomes possible to identify educational problems that affect the formation of men and women as church leaders. These include the impact of money on contemporary spirituality, self‐deception, and other forms of coping with social injustice. Primary and secondary forms of false consciousness are described, and the article concludes with suggestions about curriculum and method in the training of Christian professionals  相似文献

This paper, from the 1979 Conference, ‘Television In Society’ begins by defining the educational process as one of persisting, despite initial failures, to acquire understanding or mastery, and underlining the uniqueness of each individual learner. The author reports on the results of a one‐year study of the viewing habits of pre‐school children. Little ‘rising fives’ are such heavy viewers that they must feel a sense of loss when school attendance deprives them of ‘their’ television, perhaps the most valuable ‘child‐minder’ of all. Television delights these veteran under‐five viewers and provides an aid that parents and teachers can welcome; it also seems to stimulate little or no ‘participation’ and to inhibit language skills. Older children are also voracious viewers, but the author's experience suggests that television does not of itself inhibit reading and that to blame violent behaviour on viewing of violence is humbug. In conclusion it is suggested that educators are as yet failing to recognize the paramount importance of television in children's lives: there is an urgent need for education to acknowledge this in its curricula and for children (and adults) to find out more about how television is created. The Educational Television Association could play an important role here.  相似文献

On investigation of Union College, a two‐year college in New Jersey, it was discovered that senior citizens failed to take advantage of free college classes, for deep‐seated psychological as well as logistical reasons. In 1979, the college launched a program of bringing classes to older Americans in their own settings (Y's, churches, senior housing complexes, etc.) in subjects and at times of their own choosing. Clearly meeting a great need, the program expanded until it reached nearly 600 students in 25 classes. Success is in large part due to the work of skilled, compassionate teachers. An ongoing teacher‐training regime with emphasis on gerontology keeps them abreast of new techniques and ensures a continuing exchange of ideas. In the course of this training, it has become evident that much remains to be learned about education and the older adult. As a consequence, a joint research project of Union College and the Rutgers University Institute of Aging has been planned, with the Union College classes serving as a field test of the program and more generally of the impact of education on older Americans.  相似文献

The concept of Canon in most religious traditions remains that of a static body of ideas, doctrines, and practices usually codified in a sacred book. Jews and Christians share that classical understanding; we are the people of the Book. This essay examines how Canon becomes embodied in religious communities, how that experience forms the faithful in the tradition, and how that experience modifies the Canon of that tradition. Three specific religious communities are examined: Jewish, Catholic, and Lutheran. Each faith is deeply rooted in the Book, yet each is vibrantly alive with change and renewal. Canon is a lived experience!  相似文献

Amid debates over multiculturalism and political correctness, American higher education is beginning to test the boundaries of its economic and intellectual resources. Critics agree that, at the university end of the continuum, these organizations have lost sight of their central purpose. Meanwhile, at the other end of the continuum, community colleges that spread like ivy in the last quarter of the twentieth century face a massive need to replace aging faculty and administrators. This article provides a proposal that may help both of these giants to mutually support one another at a time when they are increasingly essential to our economy. Rationally, the only organization to meet the total needs of community colleges is the comprehensive university. Developing new credentialed administrators and faculty is a complex task and must involve several different organizations at the national, state, and local levels. With the American Association of Community Colleges at the helm, the federal and state governtments, the major associations at One Dupont Circle, the accreditation associations, and major foundations should contribute to the planning processes. The author attempts to analyze the human resource problem through three frames of reference, developed by the politicalanalyst Graham Allison (1971) to analyze major national crises such as the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. These frames are the Rational Actor, the Organizational Process, and Bureaucratic Politics. Using these as organizational frameworks, the author predicts how the organizations will behave and discusses how bureaucratic politics could be harnessed and focused at the national level to resolve the problems.  相似文献
