论沉默现象及其文化差异

语言是人类交流的重要手段,而沉默同样能传达丰富的信息,甚至是语言难以表达的内容。然而,在不同的地区,不同的文化中,人们对沉默的理解也大不相同,这些差异往往会在跨文化交流中产生误解。该文拟从文化差异的角度阐释沉默现象在东西方文化中的不同定义,以及东西方文化对待沉默的不同态度和表现,从而提高交际的有效性。     

谈沉默的语用功能及其跨文化差异

沉默是人们交际过程中不可或缺的一部分，可以表达丰富的含义并具有丰富的语用功能。在不同的文化背景下沉默的含义迥然相异。中国人通常对沉默持积极态度，在交际中沉默使用频率忱西方人高。研究沉默的文化差异有助于交际者更好地理解会话的言外之意及未言之意，从而使交际更加顺利有效地进行。

Silence in Intercultural communication

In communication,most of people’s attention focuses on verbal communication,nonverbal language as a means of exchange is often ignored.However,nonverbal language continues sending signals,and most of these signals are sent to conversational partners unconsciously.So correct understanding of these signals will help people improve effectiveness of communication.This article will focus on silence,a major part of nonverbal communication,exploring its communicative functions and cultural differences.

沉默语是一种能传达丰富信息的非语言交际行为,但是不同文化背景下的人对它的理解不同。中国人认为“语言是银,沉默是金,”相信“静水深流”。而西方人对沉默语的理解则是负面的,认为“我说,故我在”。本文介绍了中西方在文化与教学上对沉默语的不同理解,详细分析了这种差别的文化渊源,强调了语言学习与文化的密不可分。在学习一种语言的时候,我们不仅要学习它的言语知识方面,还要有非言语方面的知识。作为非言语交际的一个方面,沉默语是我们成功地学习一种语言,避免跨文化交际的失败所必须要了解的一个方面。

沉默是日常交际中重要的组成部分,然而不同文化中沉默具有不同的舍义。因此,理解不同文化中沉默的不同含义对于来自不同文化的人有重要的意义。有时引文不了解文化差异会引起种种误解。本文分析了不同文化中沉默的不同含义,对跨文化交际者具有一定指导意义。     

会话中无语的语用功能

文章以会话中的无语为研究对象，重点探讨它在会话互动中的语用功能．借助语料，我们分析了无语在不同语境条件下的四种语用功能：（1）维持面子、缓冲面子受威胁的程度以及伤害面子；（2）迟延；（3）信息短缺；（4）同意或反对。对无语功能的讨论，有助于我们重新认识无语现象，为跨文化交际的成功添砖加瓦。     

Listening for Silence in Text‐Based,Online Encounters

This article addresses the ways in which learners’ silence plays out within asynchronous and synchronous text‐based, online communication. Our study takes an ethnographic perspective in examining how learners and instructors in two online courses use and interpret silence. The ways in which those learners and instructors eventually integrated silence into their online communication were interpreted as non‐participation, confusion, marginalization, and thoughtful reflection. These findings have implications that are relevant to instructors’ efforts to create constructive online learning environments and view silence as an important aspect of social presence. We thus propose the need for the development of a deeper analysis—both empirical and theoretical—on the notions of online silence, social presence, and communication.

Silence,as a type of non-verbal communication,expresses special meanings of the speakers.The core of this study is focused on the functions of silence in conversations from the famous American TV series Prison Break(Season I),in order to reveal that silence,as an important tool in human communication,has richness of meaning and complexity of use.     

“沉默的螺旋”理论对大学生思想政治教育的适用性及启示

"沉默的螺旋"是传播学受众研究的经典理论。作为一种传播活动,大学生思想政治教育中存在着"沉默的螺旋"产生的前提条件和心理机制,因而这一理论在该领域具有适用性。由于大学生思想政治教育的特殊性,对于"沉默的螺旋"理论应该批判地借鉴:一方面要充分利用其在舆论引导、行为规范等方面的积极作用;另一方面要防止不健康的螺旋、不平等的关系带来的负面影响。"沉默的螺旋"理论提示思想政治教育者高度重视学生中的"沉默"现象,不断提升教育的针对性和实效性。

This paper makes a study of silence from cross-culture perspective and holds that silence is an indispensable component of human communication without which the proper decoding of the information would be impossible.     

THE RELIGIOUS TRAINING OF CHILDREN

Silence needs to be shown to be taught. This is because the nonverbal, which is a different way of referencing the world than symbols, cannot be translated into words. Teaching silence is of special importance today because of the connection between silence and the creation of existential meaning, as well as the functioning of the creative process itself. The loss of silence in our culture will result in the loss of religious meaning and the impairment of creativity. Without deep meaning and the creative process the human species is at risk.     

Different uses of silence explained by observing high-context cultures and low-context cultures

Silence,as a form of nonverbal communication,may be interpreted in various ways depending upon the culture.The purpose of this study is to explain misunderstanding concerned with the uses of silence in conversations situated in different cultural backgrounds,and then give possible methods to avoid it.The explanation is mainly based on the two categories related to the context posed by Edward Hall: high-context culture & low-context culture.In this part,the study also contrasts distinct verbal styles in America & Japan,in addition,it analyses different attitudes towards silence from 3 aspects: traditional value,religion and power distance.At end,the study is concluded with 4 solutions that try to solve the problem.     

大学新生英语课堂学生沉默行为的实证分析及对策研究

通过问卷调查对大学新生英语课堂中沉默行为进行实证分析,研究发现学生自信不足、缺乏交际与合作技巧、文化及教学因素导致课堂沉默行为,在此基础上,探讨打破沉默现象,实现成功课堂交际的对策,以期进一步提高大学新生英语课堂教学质量。     

课堂话轮沉默的认知解读

本文以英语课堂中的话轮沉默为研究对象,以关联理论为基础,从课堂话轮沉默的交际意向及语境效果两个角度,对课堂话轮沉默进行认知语用分析。并指出课堂话轮沉默的理解需在关联理论宏观调控下进行解读,这样对教师从根本上读懂课堂话轮沉默,不以消极的态度来对待沉默有很重要的意义。
