To enhance nominal current of high voltage vacuum circuit breakers （VCBs）, a gravity heat pipe was proposed to replace stationary conducting rod of a high voltage vacuum interrupter. The heat pipe is composed of two coaxis tubes： the external tube is made of oxygen-free copper and the inner tube is made of stainless steel. The bottom end of the inner stainless steel tube is connected to the external copper tube by holes. Transient and static thermal performance of the heat pipe was measured, and the thermal resistance of it was compared with that of a solid copper rod with the same dimensions. Experimental results showed that thermal resistance of the heat pipe was about 1/3 of that of the copper rod, and it decreased slightly with the rising of the input heat flux. 3D thermal simulation on a 126 kV/2000 A single break VCB was done to compare the thermal performance between the proposed gravity heat pipe and the copper rod serving as the stationary conducting rod of the vacuum interrupter. Simulation results revealed that in the heat pipe case, the maximum temperature between contacts was 67 ℃ lower than that in the copper rod case.

Synthesis and gel properties of sorbitol derivative gelators

1, 3：2, 4-di-p-methylbenzylidene-D-sorbitol （MDBS） is known to be an efficient sorbitol derivative gelator. Two new sorbitol derivative gelators were designed and synthesized in contrast to MDBS in order to study the gel properties of gelators with different structures. Their gelation behavior to 30 solvents was investigated. It was found that the gelation behavior was related to the molecular structure of gelators. Compared with MDBS, the gelator with more hydroxyl in the molecular structure could gel water and that with more aromatic ring could gel aromatic solvent. The fibrous and three-dimensional network of the gels was obtained by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. Ultraviolet-visible （UV-Vis） spectroscopy revealed that π-π interaction was one of the main driving forces for the formation of gels. The π-π stacking of gelation increases with the number of aromatic rings in the molecular structure of gelator. Fourier transform infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy revealed that the hydrogen bonding was also the main driving force for the formation of gels. The layered structure of the gels was studied by X-ray diffraction （XRD）.

In the giant vortex states we find that the mesoscopic rings may present three kinds of charge distribution while the disk only owns the first two kinds. The charge near the inner radius may change its sign from negative to positive with increasing applied field. In the multivortex state we find that there exist saddle-point states and stable multivortex states. University students＇ conceptions about the concept of gene： Interest of historical approach

Concepts of genetics are often difficult to teach, specifically the central concept of gene. Even the scientists disagree when defining this concept. This paper investigates university students＇ understanding about the gene and its functions. The results show the dominance of two conceptions of the gene： the Neoclassical model and the Mendelian model. The existence of hybrid conceptions and the lack of the modern model show that students are unable to mobilize the knowledge taught in biology. These results suggest to improve the teaching methods of genetics, for instance, by developing activities that bring students face to face with their conceptions.
