Preliminary Exploration on English Reading Strategy of Senior Middle School

Reading for most people is the main means to gain knowledge and the importance of it has already been widely accepted.Also,it has been regarded as the most necessary foreign language skill in most countries’ teaching syllabus of colleges and middle schools,which requires the learners to master it badly.So how to explore teaching theory of foreign language reading has become an important task for study of foreign language teaching methods.In this study,some reading theories and reading strategies provided can be helpful to developing senior middle school students’ linguistic ability and improving their reading efficiency.

Vocabulary is the basic unit in the language. It’s one of the core parts in the language, and it plays an important role in improving students’ language ability. Thus, vocabulary learning strategies play an obviously important part in the whole process of language learning. By studying the theories of the second language acquisition learning found by linguists at home and abroad, especially the vocabulary learning strategies, this research tries showing some explicate vocabulary learning strategies systematically, in order to help Middle School students use English vocabulary learning strategies more efficiently, which can improve their learning efficiency and enhance their ability of learning by themselves. At the same time, it’s another hope that this research can help more English teachers design teaching activities, which may improve the education quality.

A Research on Middle School Students’English Reading Obstacles and Strategies

English reading,a key procedure of English learning and teaching in middle school,is an essential way of getting information from the globe and communicating with others.Therefore,efficient comprehension on reading materials will directly serve for accepting the information.And it is extremely important for middle school students to acquire certain reading ability.At present,great attention has been paid to the course of reading in the instruction of English by the Chinese Education Department.But middle school students’read ing ability is still much lower than the target they should reach because of a set of existing obstacles that prevent them from being effective English readers.What are these obstacles? How to break them down? This paper will first point out and then analyze the obstacles that af fect middle school students’reading ability from two aspects:linguistic obstacles(obstacles of lexicon,grammar and background knowl edge) and non-linguistic obstacles(obstacles of psychology,interest,skill,and habit).After demonstrating different obstacles,the paper also come up with some corresponding strategies in the hope of helping middle school students to be effective English readers.

Track choice,school engagement and feelings of perceived control at the transition from primary to secondary school

The transition from primary to secondary education is regarded as a crucial phase in pupils’ school careers. Changes in the school environment have a negative influence on pupils’ perceived control and engagement. However, until now little attention has been devoted to the role of the onset of ability grouping therein, which often coincides with the start of secondary education. Research has shown that students in non-academic tracks display lower levels of perceived control and engagement. In this study we examine the relation between pupils’ prospective track choice and feelings of perceived control and behavioural and cognitive engagement before the transition to secondary education. Stepwise multilevel regression models were run on data collected from pupils in their last year of primary education in 36 schools in the cities of Antwerp and Ghent (Flanders, Belgium) in May–June 2016. The results show that pupils who indicated that they would start secondary education in non-academic tracks displayed lower levels of perceived control and behavioural and cognitive engagement than pupils who indicated that they would start in an academic track. Further analyses suggest that teacher assessments of pupils’ competence play an important role in explaining these differences according to prospective track choice—with regard to perceived control and behavioural disengagement, this effect is established net of students’ actual competence. This study demonstrates that differences in perceived control and engagement according to track originate in primary education, and that primary school teachers play a vital part in labelling students according to their future careers.     

Academic performance,childhood economic resources,and the choice to leave school at age 16

A general international observation is that adolescents from disadvantaged families are more likely to leave school at age 16. In this paper we extend the literature on school-leaving decisions by using a new and extensive panel data set from New Zealand; and by examining the effect of family income, and personal and environmental characteristics since childhood on both academic performance and subsequent schooling choices. Results obtained from single equations and joint estimation, allowing for possible endogeneity of academic performance, reveal the importance of the role of academic performance in models of demand for education. Several factors that are at work for a long time, such as household income at different points in time, influence the school-leaving decision through academic performance. These results point to the role that stimulating academic performance can play in breaking cycles of disadvantage.
