Why deaf pupils have reduced graduation rates from compulsory education in Greece？ An investigation of factors related to their low attainment

The current article deals with the issue of increased dropouts of deaf pupils from compulsory education （primary and junior high school） and tries to map out plausible reasons according to what principals and teachers for the deaf say, which might account for these reduced graduation rates for deaf pupils from primary dropouts. Official statistics are employed to demonstrate and junior high school. This data is collected through annual census surveys targeting all primary and secondary schools for the deaf, conducted by the National Statistical Service of Greece （NSSG）. Then, this paper tries to explore some of the possible reasons, which could be at the root of these increased dropout rates from primary and lower secondary schools, according to the accounts of principals and teachers for the deaf, who serve in schools for the deaf. Two types of questionnaire were employed, addressed to principals and teachers for the deaf, serving in schools for the deaf, one on one, and telephone interviews, with these two categories of respondent. Low graduation rates are associated with several factors, including inadequate coverage for schools for the deaf, the fact that Gymnasia do not operate everywhere there are primary schools for the deaf and the fact that often deaf pupils have to enrol in schools for the deaf only after suffering considerable delay can be partly attributed to the relative shortage of schools for the deaf. Other limitations include the inadequate use of hearing aids by pupils, associated with inadequate screening and assessment procedures; a lack of kindergartens and preschools for the deaf; and the relative shortage of speech therapists in schools for the deaf. In addition, teachers criticized the fact that the ＂whole-day＂ school initiative, which allows pupils to remain in school until 4 p.m. and have assistance with their homework, does not operate in the majority of schools for the deaf. In addition, the need to create books and teaching materials more tailored to deaf pupils＇ needs was mentioned, as well as inadequate or lack of teacher training in deaf pedagogy and Greek Sign Language. Findings are discussed in accordance with the international bibliography on this issue.

＂We＇re Going to Figure That Out Together＂： Implications of Segregating Programs in Content Literacy Courses

Many secondary teacher preparation programs require that undergraduate candidates complete a literacy course, usually taught within a college of education, where 30 or more teacher candidates from various majors are enrolled in the same course. University instructors teaching literacy courses may have difficulty in developing course content and assignments which are relevant to all teacher education fields. This paper explains how one university implemented a literacy course for PETE （physical education teacher education） majors only, in order to focus on how literacy can be incorporated into high school physical education courses. Nineteen teacher candidates were invited to register for a section of literacy in the content area for PETE majors. Multiple means of data collection were employed to engage participants （pre- and post- surveys, electronic discussion board and interviews）. The purpose of the study is to find out if it is beneficial for teacher candidates to participate in a segregated content literacy methods classes compared to traditional （mixed majors） content literacy methods, and the impact of a non-traditional teacher education literacy class for PETE candidates. Recommendations for future research in regards to working with content literacy across various content areas are made.     

Canadian University Professors’Perceptions of the Challenges and Support to Engage in Research

Research has been an important responsibility for university professors. Although there has been an increased demand for research, few studies have been conducted directly with university professors to obtain their perceptions of the challenges the increased focus on research have presented. This study employed a qualitative methodology to inquire into the change of work life bought about by the increased demand for research, and the strategies professors have adopted to balance their teaching, research and service. It also inquired into the barriers to conducting research, and effective support strategies. Some barriers and support identified in this study were in accordance with what previous studies have identified. Perhaps because the professors interviewed were all tenured, they noted that the increased demand for research had not significantly changed their work life. Strategies they used to help them meet the demands for research included, but were not limited to, integrating their teaching and research, and collaborating with others on research projects. Barriers to research included bureaucratic constraints, newness to research, lack of time, and lack of funding.     

Retrofitting of RC Slabs Against Explosive Loads

With the increase of terrorist bomb attacks on buildings, there is a need to develop advanced retrofitting techniques to strengthen structures against blast loads. Currently, several guidelines including an Australian version for retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) structures are available for the design of retrofitting systems against seismic and monotonic loads using steel or fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plates that can be either adhesively bonded to the surface or near surface mounted to the concrete cover. However, none of these guidelines provide advice suitable for retrofitting structures subjected to blast loads. In this paper, numerical models are used to simulate the performance of retrofitted RC slabs subjected to blast loads. Airblast pressure distributions on the surface of the slabs estimated in a previous study are used as input in the analysis. A material damage model developed previously for concrete and an elastoplastic model for steel bars are employed in this research for modelling reinforced concrete behaviour due to explosive loads. The material models and blast loading are coded into a finite element computer program LS-DYNA3D to do the analysis. With the numerical model, parametric studies are conducted to investigate RC slabs retrofitted by either externally bonded or near-surface mounted plates or GFRP sheets subjected to blast loads. Discussion is made on the effectiveness of the retrofitting system for RC slabs against blast loads.
