Language attitudes in the employment interview

This research examined effects upon employment decisions of an interviewee's speech characteristics, as displayed in job interviews. The hypothesis behind this study was that an applicant's speech characteristics affect hiring decisions in ways which could be separated from influences due to the applicant's ethnicity.     

Classroom understanding: An expanded notion of teacher clarity

The purpose of this paper is to expand and clarify the construct of teacher clarity. In doing so, this paper summarizes the findings on teacher clarity, points out two neglected areas, and presents an instrument that incorporates both content and process clarity. This study posits that clarity must be incorporated as a goal of general classroom understanding which includes content and process messages and that teacher clarity is a relational variable. The development of this instrument will allow future scholars to measure teacher clarity as it relates to other communication variables from a relational perspective. Also, the items on this expanded instrument will help teachers to become aware of and identify, more inclusively, the behaviors that constitute teacher clarity.

Professor Andrew T. Weaver has a remarkable record of leadership in Speech for the last fifty years. His contributions as a writer, as a teacher and as an officer in the Speech Association of America can well serve as an example and an inspiration to people interested in teaching Speech.     

Media's influence on immigration attitudes: An intergroup threat theory approach

The current study tests the influence of threatening-mediated intergroup contact on intergroup relations. A 2 (Immigration: Threat, No-threat) × 2 (Ingroup Group Exemplar: Present, Absent)?+?1 (Control Condition) experimental design was used to examine both the direct and indirect influence of news exposure on attitudes toward immigration. The moderating role of previous local news consumption was also investigated. Results indicate that exposure to a threatening news story about immigration directly affected attitudes toward immigrants’ human rights, but not attitudes toward immigration policy. News exposure also indirectly influenced both types of immigration attitudes through feelings of intergroup anxiety, particularly for heavy news consumers. The discussion highlights the implications for both intergroup threat theory and cultivation research.     

Research on teacher and librarian collaboration: An examination of underlying structures of models

This article reports on quantitative data collected in a mixed methods study of teacher and librarian collaboration. This practice is discussed extensively in the literature on school librarianship as an instructional strategy that positively affects student academic achievement. However, while there is much anecdotal evidence regarding successful teacher and librarian collaboration, there is little hard research that defines specific practices that lead to successful collaborations. This study provides empirical data on teacher and librarian collaboration which helps us understand the nature of collaboration and the extent to which theory and practice are integrated. Two surveys based on proposed theoretical models of teacher and librarian collaboration were used for this study. The first survey was based on Loertscger's Taxonomy. The second survey was based on a new proposed model of teacher and librarian collaboration (TLC Model) which builds on the taxonomy and expands our understanding of teacher and librarian collaboration. Participants in the study included teachers, librarians and principals from kindergarten through middle school. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was carried out on both surveys to identify underlying structures of teacher and librarian collaboration. Three factors emerged from the data identifying a range of underlying structures: integrated instruction, library and librarian as resource, and traditional role for teacher and librarian. Further research on the TLC Model with a larger number of participants and survey items is needed to examine the stability of the factor structures and to further refine the new measure.     

The central states speech association and the high school teacher: An editorial

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of rhetorical equivocation on a speaker s credibility ratings. Subjects were presented one of four messages which either equivocated the issues or spoke clearly to the issues. The results indicated that listeners conferred more credibility on those who agreed with them and less on those who disagreed with them.

Individual differences in the perception of comforting messages: An exploratory investigation

This study assessed the extent to which six individual difference variables—sex, interpersonal construct differentiation, interpersonal construct abstractness, emotional empathy, and two aspects of communication apprehension—affect the perceptions of preformulated comforting strategies. Theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed.     

我国电子政府建设过程中的信息差异现象分析

我国的数字鸿沟对于我国政府信息化最直接的影响就是电子政府建设过程中面临的或产生的各种信息差异。我国电子政府尚处于初级建设阶段,如果对此问题不加以认真对待,势必影响到电子政府建设的成败并进而干扰我国的社会稳定,阻碍我国社会信息化的进程。     

E-government discourses: An inductive analysis

This article offers a new perspective on e-government by documenting the categories of e-government discourses, and evaluating them within a public value framework. Understanding e-government discourses is significant, since these discourses represent contested visions of e-government, and one can derive a feel for public sentiment about e-government from the discourses used in the media. The findings are accumulated through an inductive analysis of 85 newspaper articles, published during the year of 2010, in three top-selling, ideologically different, nationally circulating Turkish newspapers. In these 85 articles, 98 discourses presented by 90 policy actors are found. Five positive and four negative discourse categories and their relationships emerged from the analysis of the data. The results show that, government reform efforts shaped by the New Public Management movement and Turkey's harmonization efforts with the global political system in general, and with the European Union in particular, are influential in the presentation of e-government projects to the Turkish public through newspapers.

新闻理论的健全依赖于述语模式的成熟,但我国学者从未有考量过理论新闻学述语形态的创新问题,致使理论概括欠缺深度.特定的述语形态不仅是现实生机勃勃的反映,而且是科学认识类型化的结晶,在一定意义上标志着新闻理论完善的程度.西方的新闻理论注重用现实的抽象话语演绎新闻现象的本质,达到思维逻辑的内化效果.科学的新闻理论述语形态,一要防止历史话语的无效重复,二要以抽象的话语体系代替实践性的经验话语,其理论结构的阐释有四种类型.     

Tracking gender differences: A comparative analysis of network correspondents and their sources

Being able to probive live coverage of breaking news events is one of the unparalleled strengths of television. The purpose of this study is to assess the opinions of 18–24 year olds about live television news reporting. Variables identified by respondents are characterized in one of three ways: awareness of live reporting; positive aspects of live reporting; and negative aspects of live reporting. From the more than 500 young adults surveyed, findings show most do not base their viewing habits on how often a news operation goes live or whether that operation happens to be first to hit the air with breaking news.

Respondents show strong agreement that live reporting gives the story a sense of immediacy, leading the positive attributes of live reporting. However, leading the list of negative attributes is the criticism that there are times when a live report is meaningless. There were differences in resoonses based on the market in which the respondents reside.
