Subjects were asked to rate five intensional and five extensional concepts on a battery of fifteen intensional and fifteen extensional semantic differential scales. An extra measurement was added to the usual semantic differential instrument so that subjects could indicate whether they were using each scale in an intensional or an extensional manner. Results supported previous findings that subjects have more difficulty rating scale‐concept pairs with mixed than with matched meaning domains, and indicated considerable subject‐scale interaction in the measuring instrument.  相似文献

This study investigated four discriminately different responses in information processing. Messages associated with neutral, supportive, and threatening communication climates served as the stimuli. Subjects’ responses were measured by (1) an information test; (2) a physiological measure of pupillary size; (3) a denotive measure using an oral questionnaire; and (4) a connotative measure employing a semantic differential. The results of the study were as follows: significant differences exist between information processing under a supportive climate and a threatening one on the first three measures; the fourth measure, the semantic differential, produced no significant differences between the three levels; the four tests gave significantly different results, a significant difference between treatment levels, and a significant interaction between test results and treatment levels.  相似文献

Effective handling of customer complaints is obviously in the consumers’ interest, but analysis of the letters can also provide valuable information to the organization. Organizations can use customer complaints as a way of recording organizational information and tracking effectiveness of their consumer relationship management. In this paper, we argue that organizations should adopt the use of semantic network analysis as an efficient and effective means to track complaints ‐ and what customers are complaining about ‐ over time. We present an example of the use of semantic network analysis with the complete texts of all complaint letters sent to an organization during a one‐year period. The semantic network analysis of the text of the complaint letters identifies the central concerns of this customer group and suggests that the organization address these issues. Through the use of semantic network analysis, an organization can uncover trends and provide support for decision‐making regarding customer relationship management issues.  相似文献

The first step in the investigation of the affective power of dramatic performances is the identification of those ways in which performances, either of the same or of different plays, differ from one another. Various studies have suggested that relatively few factors or dimensions account for the major portion of the variance among concepts. Using the general format of the semantic differential, the author has used audience reactions to dialogue, plot, acting, scenery, costumes, and lighting of filmed dramatic performances to identify paired adjective scales which define factors relevant to dramatic performances.  相似文献

This study attempts to summarize selected concepts from the theory of Kenneth Burke and test their applicability in a formal organization. Semantic differential scales and the paired‐comparison technique were used to gather data on “order,” “mystery,” and “identification” as perceived by members of all levels of the hierarchy within a university.  相似文献

Drawing upon role theory, this essay examines Will Rogers’ use of rhetorical irony as a means of persuasive influence. Through dramatic and Socratic irony, this rhetor “coached” audience members in the assumption of the “god‐role” of superiority. With enactment of the role, audience members theoretically and momentarily transformed their perceptions and modified their adherence to American cultural values, including technological progress, fair play, support for the underdog, anti‐imperialism, self‐determination by small nations, democratic manners, individualism, and anti‐intellectualism. Although attitude change from such role assumption is theoretically fleeting because of the transitory, non‐pervasive nature of the role, more lasting effects may be produced by repeated role assumption and enactment.  相似文献

This essay is a taxonomic study of the available means of graphic persuasion as manifested in the art of political cartooning. The authors argue that the neo‐classical canons of rhetoric, slightly modified, provide an adequate superstructure for the production and criticism of graphic discourse. It is further argued that the specific techniques which grow out of the application of the canons reveal significant differences between the means of persuasion available to the graphic artist and those available to the oral persuader. These differences of technique arise from the nature of the medium and force a reconceptualization of the canons of memory and delivery as applied to non‐oratorical forms in general and graphic persuasion in particular.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if higher and lower anxiety sensitive speakers would exhibit differential levels of four types of body sensations (gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, disorientation, and numbness) while anticipating giving a public speech. The participants were eighty‐seven undergraduate students who gave five‐minute informative speeches. The Anxiety Sensitivity Index was used to measure anxiety sensitivity, and the Body Sensations Questionnaire was used to measure body sensations during the anticipatory period. The results showed a significant difference in body sensations between higher and lower anxiety sensitivity speakers for gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary and numbness sensations. There were no significant differences found for disorientation between higher and lower anxiety sensitive speakers.  相似文献

This investigation explored the use of generalized semantic differential scales for measuring organizational credibility. Findings revealed that this use is questionable, but that such findings may be the product of factors such as ego‐involvement and knowledge of a specific organization.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The article explores the ideas of the Eurasianist movement on the unity and diversity of Eurasia, gives an overview of the role of non-Russian peoples in Russian history and culture as seen by the Eurasianists and describes the main characteristics of Eurasianist doctrine. It also discusses the semantic knot of the Eurasianist discourse, namely, the 1917 Revolution, which was accepted as the opening of a new era for Russia. In conclusion, Eurasianist views on art are introduced.  相似文献

Three studies investigated whether 3‐ and 4‐year‐olds interpret television images as mere pictorial representations of objects or as real, physically‐present objects. Four‐year‐olds gave clear evidence of making the former interpretation whereas 3‐year‐olds seemed to make the latter one. However, the data suggest that the younger children's errors reflect a failure to differentiate conceptually between television images and their referent objects rather than a conviction that real objects populate television sets.  相似文献

This investigation compared social judgment theory and the construct self‐monitoring as explanations of conformity behavior in small groups. Highly ego‐involved discussants communicated with greater emotionality and dominance and with less reasonableness than their low ego‐involved counterparts; but, the impact of ego‐involvement was partially mediated by self‐monitoring.  相似文献

Viewpoints concerning the social thought of Ralph Waldo Emerson have been many and varied, but among the most prominent has been his idealization as the philosopher of democracy in America. This study, primarily of his addresses and lectures, attempts to show him in a newer, truer, and perhaps more definitive light. As such it reveals much that was anti‐egalitarian and hence anti‐democratic, as part of his world view.  相似文献
