Some relations between personality,speech characteristics and teaching effectiveness of college teachers

The Fishbein‐Ajzen behavioral‐intentions model separates attitudinal and normative influences on behavioral intent. However, some investigations employing this model have obtained strong correlations between the attitudinal and normative components of that model, whereas others have reported no such result. The issue of the relatedness of attitudinal and normative determinants of intent is important to theorists of social behavior and the many researchers who employ the Fishbein‐Ajzen model, as well as to scholars of persuasion. Relying on constructivist theory and research, this investigation hypothesized that an individual difference variable, construct differentiation, mediates the degree of association persons are likely to exhibit between attitudinal and normative beliefs. Investigating the domain of politics and voting behavior, this study found support for that general hypothesis: persons with relatively undifferentiated political construct systems exhibited substantial collinearity between attitudinal and normative components of the Fishbein‐Ajzen behavioral‐intentions model; persons with relatively developed political construct systems did not.     

Performance as content in speech communication education

Certain behavior patterns, or junctions, are uniquely related to speech communication and these junctions can only be fully actualized through performance, performance deserving of being identified as content.     

Marital support giving as a function of attributional confidence

This study sought to investigate the relationship between attributional confidence and social and emotional support. Consistent with uncertainty reduction theory, it was hypothesized that as relationships develop, so too should relational partner ability to predict spousal behaviors, thoughts, and feelings as well as provide appropriate social and emotional support. Two hundred sixty‐nine married people completed several measures assessing perceived attributional confidence, emotional support and social support of their partner. Results indicated a positive relationship between attributional confidence and interpersonal depth, social and emotional support as well as a negative relationship between attributional confidence and interpersonal conflict. Results are discussed in terms of Uncertainty Reduction Theory.

General theoretical ideas about the essence of the academic document concept are presented in this paper. It is stated that a document can rightfully be considered as a particular case of information with the essential function of serving as evidence, proof, or as a means of teaching.     

The required first course in speech as oral communication

The writer contends that the traditional, popular approaches to the required first course in speech are limited in their contribution to the general education program. He argues that the first course as a part of general education should be approached as a course in oral communication in which certain features of the traditional approaches are combined with communication theory.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if maximum articulatory rate of children with articulatory disorders differed significantly from that of normal‐speaking peers. If differences exist between groups, then additional research is indicated to determine whether improving maximum articulatory rate will result in more acceptable articulation.     

Argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness as a function of locus of control

This study examined argumentativeness, verbal aggressiveness, and general control expectancies. Two hundred ten (N=210) participants completed the Argumentativeness Scale, the Verbal Aggressiveness Scale, and a modified version of the Three‐Factor Locus of Control Scale. Results indicate that individuals who reportan internal control orientation were found toreport lower levels of argument avoidance than externals. Externals reported higher levels of verbal aggressiveness than internals. Further, an external locus of control orientation was positively related to verbal aggressiveness. Internal locus of control orientation was negatively related to tendency to avoid arguments. The findings provide further evidence into the relationship between control expectancies and aggressive communication traits.     

Public library outreach as a function of staffing and metropolitan location

Library literature suggests that staffing and metropolitan status may affect a public library's provision of outreach efforts. Data from a 1999 survey of Arizona public library service outlets do not support the role of metropolitan status in outreach provision but reaffirms the role of staffing. In this dataset, Arizona public library service outlets had ongoing outreach efforts, with schools and preschools being the most popular venue for providing those services. Analyzing outlets' provision of outreach as a function of staffing revealed that there is a positive relationship between the number of librarians on staff and the odds that a library would conduct outreach. While metropolitan libraries were also associated with an increase in the odds of conducting outreach and making school visits, this was assumed to be a spurious correlation due to the lack of significance in models accounting for staff and metropolitan status.

The ideas and themes of that speech had been used before and would be again, but never with similar explosive effect. The author attempts to analyze six speeches by Winston Churchill in America to discover the variables that combined to create the effect at Fulton.     

Barack Obama as the Great Man: Communicative Constructions of Racial Transcendence in White-Male Elite Discourses

This study examined responses on the potential impact of Barack Obama's presidency from 16 semi-structured interviews with White males in leadership positions in various organizations across the United States. While numerous studies examine the circulating racial discourses on Obama, few studies explore how he is represented in first-hand accounts from those in the public, specifically from White-male elites. This study examined interview discourses from White-male elites to reveal how they imagine race through Obama. In positioning Obama among the pantheon of great-man leaders, this study showed how dominant racial ideologies get legitimatized and reworked when members of the dominant group desire to construct racial meanings onto a popular Black leader.     

Communicative Functions of the Museum Lobby

In a time with a heightened focus on how museum architecture and exhibition design shapes the museum visit, the entrance space of museums, the museum lobby, is remarkably absent from the museum literature and research. Still, the museum lobby is the first encounter visitors have with the museum and the last impression that they take home and share with others. This article analyzes museum lobbies as communication spaces in order to identify the different functions afforded by such spaces. In an explorative study of five Danish museum lobbies, we offer a preliminary categorization of these functions that can be compared at a general level. Concrete examples will be used to discuss general issues such as the adaptive borders of lobby spaces and the counteracting effects of design. We suggest that the preliminary categorization provided here can form a foundation for further studies resulting in practical suggestions for design improvements.
