The influence of irritating commercials on radio listening habits

This study tracks station‐switching behavior in a controlled setting and combines results from in‐depth personal interviews to assess reaction to radio commercials, particularly those commercials that cause irritation. Attitude toward the ad models were used to predict how listeners would react to exposure to irritating commercials. Results showed participants changed stations an average of once every minute and a half during the experiment. These changes took place two to three times more often during commercials than during music segments. The overall finding was that high levels of station changing occurred during all commercials, not just irritating ones. This research was made possible in part by a grant from the National Association of Broadcasters.

Impact of Motivation,Attraction, and Parasocial Interaction on Talk Radio listening

We examined the impact of motivation, interpersonal attraction, and parasocial interaction (PSI) on listening to public affairs talk radio. Hierarchical regression identified several results. PSI and exciting entertainment motivation predicted intentional and frequent listening to a favorite host. PSI, task attraction, and information motivation predicted regarding a host as an important source of information. PSI, information motivation, task attraction, and pass time/habit motivation predicted feeling that a host influenced attitudes. PSI, information motivation, and pass time/habit motivation predicted following a host's advice to act on societal concerns.     

追忆译界三老

2021年6月17日,骤见许渊冲老归于道山的讣闻,颇感意外.许老素来体健,虽说已臻百龄,也未承料想竞走得这样匆促.文学翻译原是在寂寞的文字里讨生涯,平居不过只二三知己和编辑相往还,交际的圈子一般不大.可是,电视里举办的一档读书栏目让许老蓦然成为妇孺皆知的闻人,因而我已有些时候未便前去打扰了.许老耳朵又聋,先前老伴照君在日还方便些,三年前照君走了,上门就更觉不便.一次,上海的一位朋友来北京采访,我们足足敲了一小时门,也没见门里有一丝动静.无奈之下只得放弃,转至燕园与乐黛云先生晤谈一夕.有了这一次的经验,此后就益发谨慎,轻易不敢登门,孰料遽尔至于永诀.     

Listening in organizations: An analysis of error structures in models of listening competency

Who do organizational members perceive as competent listeners? The Organizational Listening Survey was used to recall listening behaviors and attitudes through self‐ and other‐reports of typical interactions of employees participating in communication training. Using confirmatory factor analysis, a single General factor model was proposed. While the results were defensible, analysis of the error structures suggested that three additional factors were reliably discriminable and somewhat predictive of impressions of listening effectiveness and satisfaction with the work relationship. Similarly, a General factor plus two “error factors” was seen to be useful in describing perceptions of co‐workers.

An experimental comparison of vocabulary growth by means of oral reading,silent reading,and listening

While stylistic rhetorics of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are relatively well‐known, the ancient Latin works on figures of speech and thought have not attracted much attention. This paper extends our knowledge of the stylistic movement by surveying the extant classical Latin texts exclusively devoted to rhetorical figures. The treatises of Rutilius Lupus, Aquila Romanus, Julius Rufinianus and of several anonymous authors are reviewed and the development of figurist doctrine from the first century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. is sketched. It is suggested that the classical manuals on figures of thought and speech were similar in both form and content to the stylistic rhetorics of later generations and that we should regard the stylistic pattern as a single tradition which persists from the Hellenistic era through the seventeenth century A.D.
