The question of what is uniquely possible for the older adult learner is seldom asked by adult educators. Dealing with a population whose educational experiences are largely pedogogical, instructional programs have often attempted to continue this model of teacher‐selected content and methodology. This paper is a review of an experimental educational program designed to provide experiential activities related to learning needs and potentials of the older adult. The nature of the format allowed participants maximum opportunity to. identify and achieve personal learning goals. Evaluation procedures were designed to test the hypothesis that older adults respond meaningfully to programs designed to meet their needs rather than the educator's preconceptions. Results of the study indicate successful achievement of the goals of the project and an expanded level of psychosocial functioning of the older adults.  相似文献

This paper assesses the validity of a comparison of mean test scores for two groups of students, and of a longitudinal comparison of means within each group. Using LISREL, confirmatory factor analyses were carried out (a) to test the hypotheses of similar factor patterns, equal units of measurement, and equal accuracy of measurement between the two groups, and (b) to estimate the correlation between the latent traits measured by two successive test administrations in each group. The results indicate (a) that a comparison of the group means may be invalid because, although the factor pattern was the same for both groups, the factors were not measured in the same units, and (b) that longitudinal comparisons within each group are seriously complicated by evidence of structural change.  相似文献

Teacher education is challenged with preparing teachers to work effectively with culturally diverse students. Gaps in the research literature demonstrate that more bridging is needed between teacher education coursework and student teaching experiences, particularly in terms of supervision approaches that consider multicultural issues. This study argues that culturally responsible mentoring is one way to help student teachers put multicultural education into practice. Culturally responsible mentoring helps preservice teachers become critical thinkers about the cultural contexts in which they work. It also assists them in developing equitable and inclusive practices for their particular students. This study defines and describes the practices of culturally responsible mentoring and examines the impact it has on two student teachers in the field.  相似文献

In a recently conducted study it was found that an effective college teacher could be characterized chiefly in terms of "research,""teaching," and "service to the university." The present experiment corroborated these findings using a relatively unknown approach to data collection, analysis, and interpretation. A free-response method of data collection, in conjunction with nonmetric multidimensional scaling, produced results highly similar to those of the previous study. In addition, the solution permitted a straight-forward means of assessing the performance of individual faculty members.  相似文献

Eating disorders, disordered eating, and body dissatisfaction prevalence rates are on the rise among adolescent females. The present study examined the potential use of a commonly used social–emotional instrument, the Behavior Assessment System for Children‐Second Edition (BASC‐2), for detecting the presence of possible eating disorders in adolescent females in a school setting. Participants included 65 female adolescents aged 13 to 17 years from Midwestern public middle and high schools. The Eating Disorder Inventory‐Third Edition was used to determine eating disorder risk and level of body dissatisfaction. Those adolescents at risk for developing an eating disorder differed significantly on 12 of the 16 BASC‐2 scales, whereas four of these scales were also in the clinically significant range according to the BASC‐2 normative sample. A common profile of a female adolescent at risk for developing an eating disorder was explored. Implications of the findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.  相似文献

A procedure is presented for obtaining maximum likelihood trait estimates from number-correct (NC) scores for the three-parameter logistic model. The procedure produces an NC score to trait estimate conversion table, which can be used when the hand scoring of tests is desired or when item response pattern (IP) scoring is unacceptable for other (e.g., political) reasons. Simulated data are produced for four 20-item and four 40-item tests of varying difficulties. These data indicate that the NC scoring procedure produces trait estimates that are tau-equivalent to the IP trait estimates (i.e., they are expected to have the same mean for all groups of examinees), but the NC trait estimates have higher standard errors of measurement than IP trait estimates. Data for six real achievement tests verify that the NC trait estimates are quite similar to the IP trait estimates but have higher empirical standard errors than IP trait estimates, particularly for low-scoring examinees. Analyses in the estimated true score metric confirm the conclusions made in the trait metric.  相似文献

The concept of Canon in most religious traditions remains that of a static body of ideas, doctrines, and practices usually codified in a sacred book. Jews and Christians share that classical understanding; we are the people of the Book. This essay examines how Canon becomes embodied in religious communities, how that experience forms the faithful in the tradition, and how that experience modifies the Canon of that tradition. Three specific religious communities are examined: Jewish, Catholic, and Lutheran. Each faith is deeply rooted in the Book, yet each is vibrantly alive with change and renewal. By providing services to the elderly and to those who deliver services to the elderly, the library has three functions parallel to those of an institution of higher education: knowledge production, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge utilization.

Applied to a library setting, knowledge production involves basic research in the community and its subpopulations. Knowledge dissemination includes providing information and material to the elderly as consumers and dispelling common stereotypic attitudes toward the elderly. Knowledge utilization is a function of supporting the social service providers who are responsible for implementing mandated programs.  相似文献
