SUMMARY

The use of rigorous assessment in an Information Literacy program can be used to persuade reluctant faculty and administrators to buy into a program. A “culture of assessment” also assures quality control for internal and external audiences. Information Literacy at Wartburg College is unique in that it is a required component of five core courses in the general education program. This article describes Information Literacy Across the Curriculum (ILAC) at the Vogel Library and how the program has created a culture of assessment at the library and college. The article also discusses how the program is assessed at multiple times and in multiple ways through the use of direct and indirect assessment. This “culture of assessment” has been instrumental in Wartburg's acceptance of ILAC while assuring that the program thrives.  相似文献

Abstract

A pilot library liaison program was initiated with the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University at Carbon-dale. The goals were to facilitate communication with academic faculties, enhance collection development, and improve services. A uniform training program was implemented. Budgets were allocated, and negotiations for new moneys were held in a group setting. Following training, meetings were held with academic department chairs, library liaisons, and the library's Director of Reference Services and Collection Management to activate the program. The pilot program was assessed and then expanded to all sixty teaching departments on campus, using guidelines that had evolved during the pilot program. The centrality of the library as a service unit is affirmed in increased understanding and cooperation between librarians and teaching faculty. The program is continually monitored in an effort to keep the program flexible and responsive to changing needs.  相似文献

Minority internship programs are increasingly widespread. Each program is unique because it should be based on the conditions surrounding the institution and the intern. The benefits experienced and assessed by one intern should only be a consideration for other programs. This is a view of a program from the intern's perspective. The Minority Internship Program at Bowling Green State University gave me a unique experience to serve in a worthwhile capacity that resulted in my appointment as Multicultural Services Librarian in September of 1990. This internship reflects the commitment of an academic library and the intern's experiences from a working interest in the field to the successful completion of a two year internship program. Three years later this reflection gives a more comprehensive view of the efforts made to have a successful program and meet diversity goals in the library.  相似文献

In the fall semester of 2010 the University of Saskatchewan Library piloted a Library Peer Mentor initiative as part of a larger Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) program offered by the University Learning Centre. As partners in the Learning Commons located in the Murray Library, it made sense that the program should expand to include library peer mentors. After four years, personal interviews were conducted with current and former library peer mentors to consider their experience in the program and what impact it has had on them. The case study highlights how academic libraries can collaborate and broaden their scope to incorporate peer learning strategies and provide new opportunities to enhance the student experience.  相似文献

Rensselaer Middle High School has all the fiscal and social problems of a small inner city school, but critical thinking and independent learning are central to the curriculum. Learning Center programs include a grade 6-12 interdisciplinary research skills program, an automated library, and a field trip program to local public and college libraries. The hectic participation by students, the cooperation of the administration and city, and the active teaching role of the Librarian make it all work.  相似文献

The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library (CWML) at the Yale School of Medicine has offered a "Personal Librarian" (PL) program to medical center students since 1996. This outreach program matches students to a professional librarian as they matriculate, a relationship that is maintained until the student graduates. PLs offer individualized assistance for almost anything-from interpreting library policies and procedures to helping locate materials to assisting with thesis research. The program requires nominal effort on the part of the librarians, making it possible to expand the program to include other student groups. A recent survey revealed that students are extremely satisfied with the program and would generally welcome more contact from their PL.  相似文献

This article examines the role a university library plays in planning the student support services that are so crucial to a successful distance learning program. The content of the paper is based on the experience the author acquired as a member of Texas Tech University's Distance Learning Council. To prepare for a career, in which they keep up-to-date with current physical therapy procedures and health care trends, it is imperative that students become life-long learners. Four core competencies have been identified as skills to promote life-long learning: e-mail, professional electronic mailing lists (listservs), online data-base searching, and searching the World Wide Web. This paper discusses integrating the core competencies into the curriculum of a physical therapist assistant program through a collaborative effort between the physical therapist assistant program faculty and librarians.  相似文献

The University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign established the Data Purchase Program in 2010 to provide a source of funding for the purchase of datasets which are requested by students and faculty, and make this data available to the campus at large for future use. In this study, the authors interviewed past applicants who submitted proposals to this program to collect their feedback and perspectives on the strengths of this program and the impact that it had on their research, as well as to determine any aspects of the program's design or implementation that need improvements. Interviews revealed that the ease of application and lack of other options for obtaining data made the program appealing, especially to graduate students, but that study participants wished for a more robust program in terms of marketing the specific data purchased by the library and help with data in general. Also, the purchased data had a wide range of impacts on the participants' research.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to deepen our understanding of how related multiscreening affects audience memory and persuasion. A survey was administered after a live television show. The results showed that the higher the perceived relatedness of the multi-screen activity, the more persuasive the message. This effect was mediated by subsequent attention to television content, program involvement, and attention to the commercial break. The model was replicated for three different multiscreen activities: social media use, chatting, and information search. Furthermore, it was found that related multiscreening increased the likelihood of respondents staying tuned to the television after the show.  相似文献

Librarians at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport developed an outreach program for public health workers in north Louisiana. This program provided hands-on training on how to find health information resources on the Web. Several challenges arose during this project. Public health units in the region lacked suitable teaching labs and faced limited travel budgets and tight staffing requirements, which made it impractical for public health workers to travel. One solution to these problems is a portable wireless computer lab that can be set up at each site. The outreach program utilized this approach to present on-site training to public health workers in the region. The paper discusses operational and technical issues encountered in implementing this public health outreach project.  相似文献

This case study presents the development and implementation of a personal librarian program for a cohort-based, executive-style higher education administration doctoral program. Librarians and the program director collaborated to create a student-centered program based on individual research needs. Like most of its peer institutions, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries faced the challenge of meeting the needs of a growing number of students taking online courses. The author, hired as the new Virtual Learning Librarian in January 2016, was charged with creating a new Virtual Learning Program. This tutorials-based program was first fully implemented in a fully online Entomology graduate program. This paper summarizes the development of the Virtual Learning Program, how it was adapted to the Entomology program, and the initial results from the first semester of implementation.  相似文献

This article presents an innovative textbook reserve program at a mid-sized academic library. Research conducted subsequent to the program’s launch showed a positive correlation between students’ use of the program and their perceived academic success. In addition, the program has proved effective at helping students with college affordability. The Martland Hospital Medical Library has for more than a year been conducting a 16mm film program for interns, residents, attending physicians, and nurses as an adjunct to continuing education. It was possible to run this project on a minimal budget because many films are available at little or no cost from governmental agencies, pharmaceutical companies, medical associations, and universities. The program is run on a departmental basis. Films for a department are selected by the chief resident in that department from a list which the librarian has prepared of available films in the specialty involved. The library orders and publicizes the films and transacts all business in connection with them. Films pertinent to clinical practice are preferred. The administration of this program is described in this paper, and a number of film catalogs are evaluated. Criteria for film selection are discussed.  相似文献

HeLP MN Seniors was a pilot program aimed at developing an evidence-based educational program to improve health literacy/health information literacy skills in older adults. A two-part workshop series was created and a pilot test was conducted with residents of a senior living community. After attending the pilot workshops, older adults reported that they used several workshop tools and tips, were more empowered to ask questions, and were more successful in finding online health information. Based upon evidence gathered through formal program evaluation, the pilot curriculum was further customized and developed into a model educational program that has been made available for use by others.  相似文献

Moving media literacy messages out of the classroom and onto the Internet, where much news consumption happens, offers an opportunity to extend media literacy education to a wider public. However, in doing so it becomes important to consider how the context in which such messages are seen conditions their impact on media literacy attitudes and knowledge. The results of an experimental test suggest that a media literacy public service announcement was more effective in reinforcing media literacy beliefs when paired with a partisan, rather than a neutral, political program. The effects of presenting media literacy messages outside of the classroom are discussed.  相似文献

The amount of improvement that takes place in stutterers’ speech as a result of a two semester therapeutic program was objectively evaluated by means of tape recordings. The results indicate that the stutterers did not show improvement either in the fluency of their speech nor in the overall severity of their stuttering. Whatever the reasons for this lack of improvement it seems reasonable to propose that it is by using such objective criteria as tape recordings that scientifically minded speech pathologists will be able to accurately estimate the worthwhileness of a particular stuttering therapy program.  相似文献
