Language is a key component part of culture. It reflects culture. As a variety of British English, American English,especially American words reflect American culture, including their custom, their view of value, their character traits. Being amelting pot, American words melt a lot of loanwords. The exaggerated use of words shows Americans are self-confidence.They also use beautified words to show their wish to life, to future. They can use common words, usually slang to express spe-cial ideas. By doing so, they create something new and original. In addition, the autonomous factors restricting the continuous professional development must be changed. The goal of teaching English speaking is to improve students’ communicative efficiency, or make students speak the target language clearly, coherently, accurately and fluently (Xu, 2005). However, in China, a number of students in an English speaking class tend to be passive and reluctant to speak out or be singled out publicly mainly due to their high anxiety, which, of course, becomes a significant constraint on improving their English proficiency. Therefore, how to create a relaxed atmosphere with a sense of security in the English speaking class to alleviate Chinese learners’ anxiety and to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to practice speaking English and improve their English proficiency is one of the central tasks for language teachers.his paper will firstly outline my teaching context in China in physical, pedagogical, institutional and personal aspects. This will be followed by the definition and classification of language learning anxiety, and the analysis of various factors contributing to foreign language learners’ anxiety as well as some suggestions of how to reduce the learners’ anxiety in the oral class according to the current literature. Finally, some applications will be presented in my teaching context in the hope of decreasing Chinese students’ anxiety to enhance their English speaking proficiency.  相似文献

Different languages are unable to be separated from their specific social culture backgrounds. Vocabulary is language’s subsystem. English metaphor is an important part of vocabulary; it belongs to the semantic motivation of English lexicology. The social culture of a language reflects more from its linguistic metaphor. Metaphor is a significant language phenomenon that is closely linked with its culture. Much of the deep culture of a language (such as view of life, view of value, etc.) is instantiated and transmitted through the metaphors people use on the daily basis. Nowadays, English as a world language becomes more and more important. Consequently, English learning becomes more and more popular. As we know, an important object for English learners is to improve their communicative competence. So autonomous learning is a good way to improve communicative competence. In this paper, two terms, autonomous learning and communicative competence, and their relationship will be introduced from the perspective of English learning. Autonomous learning is self-managed learning, which is contrary to passive learning and mechanical learning, according to intrinsic property of language learning. Communicative competence is a concept introduced by Dell Hymes and is discussed and refined by many other linguists. According to Hymes, communicative competence is the ability not only to apply the grammatical rules of language in order to form grammatically correct sentences but also to know when and where to use these sentences and to whom. Communicative competence includes 4 aspects: Possibility, feasibility, appropriateness and performance. Improving communicative competence is the result of autonomous learning, autonomous learning is the motivation of improving communicative competence. English, of course, is a bridge connecting China to the world, and fostering students’communicative competence through autonomous learning is the vital element of improving English learning in China.  相似文献

In English study,the wide range of idioms used in various situations has brought great difficulties for our English learners owing to their semantic unity,structural stability,permutation,productivity,strong cultural dependence.The author holds the view that the meaning of an idiom concerns closely with its associative meaning,such as logic,psychology,sociology,history.Therefore in this paper three ways are proposed to avoid wrong interpreting of English idioms,that is,through context,through cultural connotations,and through cognitive mechanisms.  相似文献

Differences on teaching goals between general English and business English are obvious to teachers. However, experi-ence gap commonly found among pre-experience business English learners may prevent them from understanding their specific needs of learning business English, hence resulting in the fallback on learning general English. This gap may also lead to their diffi-culties in understanding complex business concepts.
