Gaussian particle filter based pose and motion estimation

Determination of relative three-dimensional (3D) position, orientation, and relative motion between two reference frames is an important problem in robotic guidance, manipulation, and assembly as well as in other fields such as photogrammetry. A solution to pose and motion estimation problem that uses two-dimensional (2D) intensity images from a single camera is de- sirable for real-time applications. The difficulty in performing this measurement is that the process of projecting 3D object features to 2D images is a nonlinear transformation. In this paper, the 3D transformation is modeled as a nonlinear stochastic system with the state estimation providing six degrees-of-freedom motion and position values, using line features in image plane as measuring inputs and dual quaternion to represent both rotation and translation in a unified notation. A filtering method called the Gaussian particle filter (GPF) based on the particle filtering concept is presented for 3D pose and motion estimation of a moving target from monocular image sequences. The method has been implemented with simulated data, and simulation results are provided along with comparisons to the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to show the relative advantages of the GPF. Simulation results showed that GPF is a superior alternative to EKF and UKF.

Several Cultural Mistakes in Foreign Language Communication

Culture and language are both products of hum an society. This paper concerns the close relationship betweelanguage and culture. Some social scientists consider that language is the keystone of culture. Language is a media of communicationwhich is culturally conditioned. Culture, as a significant feature of human society and the soil for language emergence as well abackground for language use, is closely knitted together with language. However, current teaching syllabus in China does noprovide a system of the specific cultural contents to be included in any teaching program. Culture as a set of traits is by and largeneglected area and has drawn little attention. According to a famous professor Hu Wenzhongs paper, more than 90% students admithat there is a cultural gap between native English speakers and Chinese English learners and all of them think that awareness ocultural difference should be made a goal in language learning and teaching. In intercultural communication, culturamisunderstanding is often worse than linguistic one and tend to create ill feeling between native speakers and Chinese speakers oEnglish. Therefore, cultural mistakes as well as linguistic mistakes should be avoided in order to be successful in inter culturacommunication.     

Language policy provisions and curriculum issues： The challenges for secondary schools in Nigeria

Language, language policy and curriculum issues occupy very important and strategic places in educational planning in any society. In a multilingual Nigerian society as well as in similar countries like Australia, India or even in seemingly homogenous linguistic societies like Britain, language planning, development and policies are sin qua non. In this paper, the author has tried to look from the perspectives of the provisions of the National Policy on Education （1981） and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria （1979）, and examine the curriculum issues arising from the language and policy aspects in achieving the national educational aims, goals, objectives and development. This paper takes a cursory look at the constitutional and policy documents as well as the realities on ground in the secondary schools. It is discovered that, this sub-sector of education is characterized with language implementation crisis. The disturbing issue is that, since the language of instruction is bedeviled with crisis, the whole educational system itself becomes a failure. The paper recommends that, Nigeria should carry out a language policy reforms that will be acceptable and effective bearing in mind the role of language and language policy in education.     

Dissolved oxygen sensor based on sol-gel matrix doped with tris(2,2’-bipyridine)ruthenium dichloride

To establish a immobilization method of oxygen sensitive dye, a dissolved oxygen sensor based on a sol-gel matrix doped with ruthenium complex ([Ru(bpy)3]2+) as the oxygen-sensitive material is reported. The results indicate that the I0 /I100 value of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+-doped in tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS) composite films are estimated to be 10.6, where I0 and I100 correspond to the detected fluorescence intensities in pure nitrogen saturated water and pure oxygen saturated water, respectively. Also, the Stern-Volmer plot shows a very good linearity at low dissolved oxygen concentrations. The response time of the composite films is 5 s upon switching from nitrogen saturated water to oxygen saturated water and 10 s from oxygen saturated water to nitrogen saturated water. The dissolved oxygen sensors based on the ruthenium complex/TEOS composite films exhibit greater sensitivity, stability and faster response time as compared to the existing ones. Furthermore, the thin films possess greatly minimized dye leaching effect.     

Teachers' Roles in the Teaching of the Course of English Linguistics

Linguistics is a necessary course for English-majors because it plays an important role in second language learning, teaching and research. It is significant, yet difficult to make this course comprehensible and interesting and get the students involved in and attracted by it. This paper intends to analyze and explore teachers’ roles in the course of linguistics from the following aspects: as an explainer, as an activator, as a co-learner, as a question-finder and as an enabler. Some examples are taken to show how to make use of comparison, contrast, instance, discussion, and practice for classroom management. What’s important for a teacher of linguistics is not only to understand linguistic theories and carry on linguistic research by him- or herself, but also to make his or her students get to know the nature of language and learn to do scientific studies of language by themselves.     

Helical Configurations of Elastic Rods in the Presence of Interfacial Traction

The Kirchhoff thin elastic rod models are always the important basis to explore the configuration mechanism of the flexible structures in both the macroscopic and microscopic scale. As a continuum model of DNA, a thin elastic rod subjected to interfacial interactions is used to investigate the helical equilibrium configuration of DNA in salt solution. In this paper, the Kirchhoff’s equations in the presence of interfacial traction and the free energy density functions of different configurations are studied. The transition formula of the free energy between B-DNA and ZDNA is obtained, and the results show that the free energy of the transition is mainly determined by the salt concentration, which agrees well with the experimental data.

Biological early warning and emergency management support system for water pollution accident

Water pollution accidents such as chemical spill and toxicants leach have become a serious issue in the world, which brings great threats to the aquatic ecosystem and drinking water safety. To detect unknown pollutions in time and take proper emergency actions, this study developed a system which integrated an online intelligent water quality monitoring device with a high efficient water quality model. The device is based on water quality probes and biological sensors which use fish motion as indicator. The numerical model is a combination of Euler and Lagrangian approaches. Finite element method is applied to simulate the flow field in an unstructured grid, and the pollutant be- haviours are traced through particle tracking. Oracle is used to manage the basic and monitoring data, and ArcSDE as well as ArcIMS technologies are applied to make the system WebGIS-based so as to improve the data receiving and dispatching efficiency. The developed system has been successfully operated in Douhe Reservoir and Taihu Lake, China, where drinking water intakes are installed. It is seen from the applications that the online intelligent water qual- ity monitoring and emergency support system can be of great support to emergency management.

This is a writing story about trying to create just classroom assessment practices not excluding anybody and therefore an attempt to explore what an opening up to judgment, and in my view, what assessment focused on learning might mean and subsequently imply. Social justice and democracy is at stake. How to develop and improve our assessment literacy？ How to develop trustworthy and good assessment systems？ What are our tools and what methods can we use？ Given a discussion about either summative or formative assessment and preferably both, this is primarily an attempt to think about principals before turning to instruments or starting with the beginning and beyond rather than the endpoint. I argue for keeping classroom assessment as an indefinite problem, a problem not to be solved or a term not to be understood once and for all. That will hopefully foster cultural pluralism and heterogeneity around the term： learning more, learning all, all learning. Ultimately this is about the linguistic conditions for change; but as a move from language to law and as aporetic thinking and through the pivoting but liberating effects of writing; a writing both positioning and giving direction. Through language and as a right to philosophy that is. It is about creating a heteroglossia of a fresh writing inscribed in, through and with otherness; ＂another logic＂ that is.

Object-oriented model possesses inherent concurrency. Integration of concurrency and object-orientation is a promising new field. MPI is a message-passing standard and has been adopted by more and more systems. This paper proposes a novel approach to realize concurrent object-oriented programming based on Message-passing interface(MPI) in which future method communication is adopted between concurrent objects. A state behavior set is proposed to solve inheritance anomaly, and a bounded buffer is taken as an example to illustrate this proposal. The definition of ParaMPI class, which is the most important class in the concurrent class library,and implementation issues are briefly described.

Multicasting is a communication service that allows an application to efficiently transmit copies of data packets to a set of destination nodes. The problem of finding a minimum cost multicast tree can be formulated as a minimum Steiner tree problem in networks, which is NP-completeness. MPH (minimum path cost heuristic) algorithm is a famous solution to this problem. In this paper,we present a novel solution TPMPH (two phase minimum path cost heuristic) to improve the MPH by generating the nodes and the edges of multicast tree separately. The cost of multicast tree generated by the proposed algorithm with the same time as MPH is no more than that of MPH in the worst case. Extensive simulation results show that TPMPH can effectively improve the performance on MPH, and performs better in large-scale networks and wireless networks.
