Children's Experience in the Playground

This paper reports on an investigation carried out in a ‘key’ secondary school in Shanghai. This investigation is set in the broader context of current developments in Chinese Education. Perhaps the first surprising discovery is that the affective aspects of education are seen as highly significant in these developments. Given the vast numbers involved and great regional differences, what is described here is likely to be only representative of the best practice. The particular focus of this paper is on the multifaceted role of the class teacher. The second surprise is that though there are great differences, not least in the politicization of education, there are striking parallels with English education and there are some instances where the class teacher’s practice as described here is in advance of many of their English counterparts.     

Inclusive Education in Brunei Darussalam

This paper describes major developments in Brunei Darussalam during the past decade that highlight inclusive education as a significant educational agenda. A brief history of disability services is first described to provide a backdrop of pre-1994 developments and activities that occurred in the country. Next, the education system in Brunei is introduced with specific reference to how special education became relevant to serving the needs of students with special needs within the mainstream school system. Major developments in the inclusion movement during the past decade are then described in terms of policy, implementation and teacher education. The article concludes with a discussion on current local research that seeks to inform the direction of practice and policy of inclusive education in Brunei Darussalam.

Shaping up? Three acts of education studies as textual critique

This paper presents a study of dominant educational discourses through textual critique and argues that such an approach enables education studies to preserve an important distinction from teacher training. The texts deconstructed here are specific to English education, but the discourses at work have international relevance as the rhetorics of accountability, performance and measurement (which we call cells of discourse) have global reach. Ward described a national picture in England whereby the great majority, if not all, of education studies undergraduate courses appear to be taught alongside, or within (through shared modules) teacher training programmes. But from a sociological position, these are two increasingly conflicting arenas—the study of education and the training of teachers. In response, Ward called for the subject to radicalize teacher education. The implications of this are significant if education studies is to retain a status as agent of critique. In this paper we return to the theme of education studies as a discrete practice from teacher training and suggest that any acceptance of a proximal relation to teacher education is counter‐productive. In so doing we offer three contemporary examples of the subject at deconstructive work, scrutinizing the published standards for teacher training in England, employer discourse and the Tomlinson report (commissioned by the English government to offer proposals for the reworking of vocational education) and the new curriculum for adult literacy in England. Particular attention is given to analysing the ways in which such texts speak the currently powerful discourse of standards.

Reflective Practice through Critical Friendship: some possibilities

This paper examines a ‘critical friendship’ over a period of one school term. A secondary English teacher and a university lecturer in education came together in school to consider the possibilities for mutual professional development. They drew upon a belief that both their practices could be improved through mutual critical discussion. Here they present illustrations from their experience as a means towards a discussion of some principles for the development of participative reflective practice based on working partnerships. This experience and the lessons derived from it may be of relevance to others considering possibilities for forging stronger links between schools and higher education institutions. A general conclusion is that there are important practical constraints to come to terms with. Moreover, even in a relatively confident and relaxed working relationship there are great sensitivities on both sides. These need to be acknowledged, rather than submerged in mechanical routines.

Early childhood education and care in China: history,current trends and challenges

This paper reviews the development of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in China. The historical context from 1900 is summarised, and then developments from the 1980s up to the present kindergarten expansion movement, starting in 2010, are covered in detail. The review shows that ECEC development in China has undergone great changes both in policy and practice. The clash between progressive ideas and existing kindergarten practices has been and remains a challenge. The ‘cultural appropriateness issue’ is of concern, and there are strong voices for keeping valuable aspects of Chinese traditional culture. China has put great efforts recently into boosting kindergarten participation nationwide; yet, there have been and remain great social economic disparities at various levels. There is also growing concern that the programme quality cannot be maintained with the rapid kindergarten expansion process. Policy development for the childcare sector (0–3) in China is relatively thin compared to recent booms for kindergartens.

从汉英语法结构差异看中西方文化与思维方式

中国石油大学使用计算机/网络辅助外语教材的调查报告

鉴于当前教育改革引发的大班教学的现实以及自主学习理念的风行,计算机/网络化课堂教学以及其配套教材建设作为一种新的课堂教学模式迫在眉睫,对其进行研究具有重要的理论和现实意义。在中国石油大学(华东)大学一年级《大学英语》课程实验的基础上,该实证研究探讨外语教学中研发和使用计算机/网络教材的可行性及面临的问题。     

大学英语教学改革中山区大学英语教师信念的个案研究

近年来教师信念的问题逐渐受到国内教育界的关注,但山区地方大学的大学英语教师的信念却鲜少研究。通过对闽北山区的四位大学英语教师进行访谈和课堂观察,结果发现山区的大学英语教师普遍更新了传统的教师信念,但在实际课堂教学中存在着教师信念与教学实践不一致的现象,并对此提出了进行教师教育和培训的建议。
