Summary

Working with clients with both substance abuse and other Axis I mental health concerns is becoming more and more common on a college campus as well as in the general population. By utilizing both brief therapy techniques and a harm reduction approach, the therapist engages the client where the client is ready to begin in an attempt to motivate the client toward healthier choices. This chapter reports a case of college student psychotherapy involving short 1doses” of counseling over the course of a student's four-year college career. During treatment, the student addressed and increasingly came to terms with issues involving relationships with his family, friends, and love interests. Impulse control manifested in following or low-level stalking behavior is treated using stage-specific interventions described by Prochaska. This approach suggests that therapy address the particular stage at which the client is working as well as the conditions of the diagnosis. This single session conversation demonstrates a post-modern approach to counseling. Using constructionist concepts, the therapist and student collaborated to create a common language. Through this shared meaning making, the therapist witnessed the student retrieve a preferred story of her life. A 19-year-old single Appalachian Caucasian man presented with panic attacks related to a recently developed phobia of bees. Brief solution-oriented therapy, along with the tools of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), was employed successfully to treat this specific phobia. The case of a male graduate student struggling with excessive interpersonal anxiety and promiscuous sexual behavior is presented. The interpersonal issues were addressed within the therapeutic relationship drawing parallels to and from relationships outside of therapy. The authors explored how college students’ disordered eating behaviors affect their peers. Participants were 8 undergraduate students from a northeastern university with a peer who currently or previously engaged in eating disorder (ED) behaviors. Results from a consensual qualitative analysis provided preliminary evidence that students’ EDs negatively affect peers. Outreach and interventions such as cognitive behavior therapy could be used to assist peers of students with EDs. Researchers should investigate the impact of students’ ED behaviors on peers’ health and academic performance.  相似文献

Abstract

This article explores the need for university counseling centers (UCCs) to implement brief therapies and describes one such treatment, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), as a particularly viable therapeutic approach in this setting. Because ISTDP is not appropriate for all students seeking therapy, a careful assessment of the client is conducted prior to deciding which treatment approach is best suited for the client. The different restructuring techniques that comprise ISTDP are discussed. The article ends with a brief vignette from a therapy session with a student involving ISTDP techniques.  相似文献

A young adult devotee of a High Demand Group (“cult”) was engaged in brief intermittent developmental (BID) therapy, initially aimed at assisting him to critically assess his cult involvement. Over a five-year period, BID therapy helped him cope with two subsequent post-cult crises. Successfully negotiating these crises allowed further consolidation of his identity, and facilitated continued development of autonomy.  相似文献

The authors explored Hispanic and Caucasian college women's (N = 264) behavioral and attitudinal symptoms of eating disorders after controlling for body mass index and internalization of the thinness ideal, as well as the roles of ethnicity and ethnic identity in symptomatology. Correlational analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, and regression analysis suggested more similarities than differences between Hispanic and Caucasian college women in terms of eating disorders.  相似文献

This report outlines the evaluation of a brief dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) group skills training program for students presenting with serious psychological concerns (referral reasons included suicidality, self-injury, and substance use). Students were enrolled in distress tolerance groups ranging from 7–10 weeks. The majority of the students in the sample were receiving psychiatric medication, individual therapy, or both. All students (= 22) demonstrated significantly improved scores on measures of emotion regulation and functional and dysfunctional coping. These results are the first to show that targeted skills training with DBT mindfulness and distress tolerance skills can produce beneficial outcomes in college students in the context of a short-term intervention.  相似文献

Peer counseling owes its beginnings to the paraprofessional movement of the '60s. During the last fifteen years, there has been a growing acceptance of peer counseling, particularly on college campuses. It can be defined as the active use of listening and problem-solving skills together with knowledge about growth and development by students in order to help, advise, and counsel other students. The peer counselor assists other students by clarifying thoughts and feelings, be exploring options, or providing needed information. The use of nonprofessionals in counseling roles has a systematic research history in the literature. Further, there is evidence that preparation for the role and reflection on experience as a peer counselor can be a powerful and enabling factor in individual and group development; through providing service to others, students exercise altruism and learn interdependence in the process of individuation. Recommendations are made for program structure, function, and evaluation; it is suggested that peer counseling programs fit well into a matrix of interventions aimed at assisting student development in a learning environment conductive to growth and developmental needs.  相似文献

This study analyzes the personal narrative of flow experiences across three elite sportsmen within their particular sport autobiographical contexts. Using a holistic formal structure analysis to examine the participants’ self-narratives, five major themes emerged: (a) early socialization as the basis of a strong athletic identity, (b) withdrawal from sports as a threat to athletic identity, (c) the dramatic weight of the narrative plots within which the experiences of flow are inserted, (d) biographical sporting flow accounts, and (e) silences and devaluations in flow narrative. The results of the narrative analyses show a close relationship between the flow experiences and athletic identity. This study concludes that, in this case, the narratives of flow experiences have had an ontological role as they served to assert the participants’ threatened athletic identity. Hence, studying narratives as practices is a useful way to better understand not only the internal coherence of the narrative fragments into which flow experiences are inserted, but also the role that they play regarding the autobiographical narrative into which these are inserted.  相似文献
