Men in our society, including college student men, both need and fear personal psychological services more than women. For example, twice as many women as men seek counseling an psychotherapy but young men commit suicide at a rate nearly four times that of their female counterparts. Man are also more severely destructive in other ways, including most self-imposed illnesses and injuries, drug abuse, murder and other crimes, though women are now more destructive in "macho ways" than they were fifteen years ago. The thesis is advanced that when emotional needs and asking for help are severly stigmatized by the machismo orientation, unbalanced by personal sensitivity and insight, the macho dynamic is inherently morbid in the sense that it is destructive both to the self and others. This thesis is documented by statistics, highly expressive and influential literary portrayals, movies and sports phenomena. Implications for college and university psychotherapists are noted, and basic re-educative "outreach" approaches are suggested both to make psychotherapy more accessible and to foster more constructive role models for men.  相似文献

采用问卷调查法对900名大学生进行测量并访谈。结果表明,大学生在寻求专业性心理帮助的态度总分和各维度上,均存在显著民族差异;在寻求专业性心理帮助的态度总分和需要维度上存在性别差异;长期处于心理困惑、内心冲突的人是咨询首选对象;面对心理困难时,大学生倾向选择好友、父母进行求助,部分自己承受;对心理咨询师的首要要求是思想品德好,希望咨询室放松、安静、舒适、温馨;大学生会根据不同的咨询内容选择不同性别、年龄的咨询师,且面谈咨询成为首选咨询方式;大部分人希望高校心理咨询免费,但认为测量和治疗可适当收费。研究初步结论认为,大学生对高校心理咨询的态度与要求将为西北地区高校更优质地开展心理咨询服务提供一定的理论支持与实践基础。  相似文献

Today's college and university students find mental health services far more available and acceptable than did students in their parents' generation. But even bright and well-educated people still tend to attach stigma to getting help with emotional problems and the considerable developmental challenges of the college years. Parents are advised to acknowledge their sons and daughters needs to grow psychologically and to try to reduce the stigma. Practical information about services is provided, major kinds of crises-including sucicide threats, substance abuse and psychotic breakdown- are discussed, and psychotherapy is described as a process of experiential learning. College counseling centers may come under increasing scrutiny by administrators regarding how their services contribute to student retention. College counselors can use data to demonstrate a positive influence of counseling on retention, but they also need to educate administrators that student retention should be a consideration among many when evaluating the efficacy of services. The author reviews findings from studies on the impact of college counseling on retention and addresses implications for counseling centers.  相似文献

College counseling centers are facing rapidly increasing demands for services and are tasked to find efficient ways of providing adequate services while managing limited space. The use of therapy groups has been proposed as a method of managing demand. This brief report examines the clinical time savings of a traditional group therapy program in a college counseling center. The savings were mixed from semester to semester, ranging from 5 individual therapy spots lost to 10 individual therapy spots gained depending on the estimation. Considerations are offered for the use of therapy groups to manage clinical demand based on this report.  相似文献

College counseling centers have experienced continued change and development in roles and functions since their inception in the 1930s. Recent shifts include a focus on personal counseling, the broadening of services, and an increased severity in student problems. Administrative policy, restricted staffing, and limited budgets particularly impact small college counseling centers. Part of the mission of the American Association of Community Colleges addresses the need for a curriculum emphasis on international and intercultural education (Wismer, 1994, p. 77). Considering that (a) 2‐year colleges exist primarily to prepare students for jobs, (b) many American businesses operate in an international environment, and (c) a growing proportion of companies in the United States are foreign affiliated, the internationalization of our curriculums is necessaryforthe fulfillment of institutional missions of preparing the workforce for businesses. However, to fully internationalize college programs and services, the focus must be on more than courses and curriculums. The everyday life of college students, faculty, and staff must present evidence of cultural diversity. Internationalization, therefore, must be infused at every level of college activity. Such an infusion is occurring at Florence‐Darlington Technical College in Florence, South Carolina. There are four broad categories within which activities are planned or are underway: (a) resource development, (b) awareness development and information dissemination, (c) faculty and staff development, and (d) curriculum development. The importance of the need for this South Carolina college to undertake internationalizing initiatives is underscored by the multicultural business environment that exists in the state. For many years, international investment has created record levels of new employment opportunities for South Carolinians and has contributed significantly to statewide economic and industrial growth. The economic impact of international business in the state is apparent. However, there is also a cultural impact that is less obvious, yet profound. These factors present some definite implications for the need to internationalize technical college programs and services.  相似文献

大学生成就动机主要是实现自身的价值,充分发挥自己的潜力,希望这种追求能符合社会需要,并获得社会的承认。研究表明,大学生的成就动机水平在四年期间并没有显著的变化。就学业方面来说,从一年级到四年级成就动机水平逐年下降;大学生的成就动机在城乡维度上有差异,但是未能达到显著水平;家庭背景和家庭经济状况对成就动机水平有显著影响;大学生成就动机的个人取向比较突出,但是两种取向是并存的。目前大学生的成就动机在整个学习动机中只是中等水平的作用。  相似文献

The current study examined expectations and preferences of psychotherapy approach in 225 college students. Psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) techniques were generally favored over cognitive-behavioral (CB) techniques both in expectations of what is characteristic of a typical therapy session and perceived helpfulness. There was no difference in findings between therapy naïve college students and those with a history of psychotherapy. Psychological mindedness was correlated with PI ratings, but not CB ratings. College counselors may want to emphasize emotional and relational strategies when working with college students and may benefit from examining the psychological mindedness of new clients to assist with determining their treatment plan.  相似文献

Bases upon developmental theory and empirical evidence it is argued that most college students develop "normally." They change and grow gradually during the college years, becoming more independent and mature in psychological , social, and intellectual areas. Effective coping is part of this progressive development during late adolescence and early adulthood, but an identity crisis is not found to be an expectable event. Coping helps us to solve problems which are realatively difficult and challenging or to accept unchangeable circumstances. We are forces to behave in new ways and often feel better and stronger as a result. College coping is explored in terms of the more general factors in human adaptation and the specific mechanisms and processes actually used by college students. Key mechanisms include: information, competence, use of the past, humor, predictability, control, self-observation, flexibility, and stability. Parents play an important role in each student's support system during college. They need to grant independence to their students, to become informed about college life, and to remain supportive and confident of positive college outcomes. The emotional bond of student and family is critical to student development, and students usually maintain this continuity with family values even if they have experimented with different alternatives during college.  相似文献

There is evidence that today’s college and university students are struggling with emotional and behavioral health problems at higher rates than in past generations. This article explores the various ways, utilizing a range of models, that college and university counseling centers have mobilized to respond to these challenges. We examine literature about the characteristics and concerns of the current student generation along with what counseling centers are doing to respond to the challenge of student needs. We describe a survey (N = 408) of members of the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD) and American College Counseling Association (ACCA) that elicited the kinds of services, functions, structures, and organizational relationships found in today’s counseling centers. In addition to confirming the core mission of providing counseling and psychotherapy, the survey revealed widespread counseling center collaboration and consultation activities beyond the counseling room. The survey also indicated a variety of administrative and structural arrangements in the way counseling centers are placed on their individual campuses. Finally, we suggest a framework for planning, executing, and evaluating counseling center and campus initiatives.  相似文献

Some theories of family psychotherapy and adolescent development are reviewed. The suitability of family and couples techniques for brief psychotherapy with college students is discussed. Four cases are described in which family psychotherapy techniques were used with college students. In each, these techniques were used in conjunction with ongoing individual psychotherapy. The participants in conjoint sessions were either family members or close friends. Determination of participants in conjoint sessions, benefits of family psychotherapy techniques, and the use of dreams are discussed. Suggestions are offered on when to use family psychotherapy techniques with college students.  相似文献

The decision to "hold" these students in a long-term on-campus psychotherapy may be a function not only of the psychological vulnerability of the students themselves, but also of the counselor's ambivalence toward the institution's role in raising unrealistic expectations in these students. Despite these students very real need for psychotherapy, the college counseling center may not provide the most workable setting because of the specialness of long-term psychotherapy in this context and because of the scarcity of counseling time. This study revealed that problem drinking and an elevated need to control hinder college student ACoAs more than their non-ACoA peers. A multivariate analysis, using the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) and Ego Grasping Orientation (EGO) as measures of the dependent variables of problem drinking and control, was used with a college freshman sample. Based on the results, routine problem drinking assessment of ACoAs by student services personnel was suggested. The manifestation of an elevated need to control was thought to range from the popular ACoA styles to the personality disorders. A method for determining an ACoA's place in this range, as well as the implications for psychotherapy, was outlined.  相似文献
