This study investigated predictors of international students' attitudes toward seeking counseling. One hundred twenty‐one international students responded to mailed questionnaires. Results indicate that being female, having greater openness to emotions, and having had prior counseling experience were significant predictors of more open attitudes toward seeking counseling.  相似文献

This study examined Asian international graduate students’ expectations of and attitudes toward counseling by using U.S. graduate students as a comparative reference group. Survey data from 189 Asian international and 186 U.S. students were subject to analyses. Results indicated that Asian international students, in comparison with U.S. students, indicated less exposure to counseling, less self-perceived need for counseling, greater discomfort/shame with counseling, less openness to counseling, a greater preference for a directive style, and a greater preference for a flexible counseling format. Language and cultural concerns were barriers to seeking counseling. Implications for culturally responsive services were discussed.  相似文献

This study examined Asian American and Asian international college students' attitudes toward seeking online professional psychological help as well as traditional face‐to‐face professional psychological help. Results suggest that students had less favorable attitudes toward seeking help online than toward seeking help by traditional face‐to‐face means. Implications for counseling center services for Asian American and Asian international college students are discussed.  相似文献

International students face many demands as they navigate the cross-cultural transition of living and learning in host countries such as Canada. The cultural diversity represented in this student population poses unique challenges for multicultural counseling. The ways that international students have been represented in the literature may contribute to barriers for effective counseling services. The discussion begins with a summary of the issues faced by international students when living and learning in a foreign country. Several limitations in the counseling literature about international students are addressed, including, the limitations of culture shock as a model of cross cultural transition, the lack of methodological diversity in research involving international students, a focus on group characteristics, and the continued emphasis on the problems experienced by international students. Suggestions for counselors are given to enhance their multicultural counseling competencies for working with international students.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between a set of self–efficacy variables and a set of variables assessing attitudes toward counseling. Results revealed a significant relationship between self–efficacy and attitudes toward counseling among a sample of 253 first–year college students. Low perceptions of self–efficacy were associated with a devaluation of career counseling and more negative attitudes toward seeking personal counseling. Implications for these findings are discussed.  相似文献

This brief report was designed as a follow-up to a study that found that compared to nontransfer students that presented to the counseling center, transfer students who presented to the counseling center endorsed higher levels of symptoms of depression and social anxiety, as well as more academic and family problems. The current study investigated mental health differences within the transfer student population based on when (i.e., this semester; last semester; last year; 2 years ago; more than 2 years ago) and from where (i.e., community college vs. 4-year institution) students transferred. There were no significant differences based on when and from where students transferred. However, these findings still may be clinically meaningful and implications are presented.  相似文献

International students in higher education represent a diverse population with unique mental health needs. Foreign students commonly experience a host of adjustment issues, including acculturative stress, language difficulties, cultural misunderstandings, racial discrimination, and loss of social support. Despite their challenges, few international students seek individual counseling. The purpose of this article is to present counseling groups as a treatment modality for addressing international students' adjustment concerns. Special attention is directed to the practical, ethical, and cultural challenges of conducting group counseling with this population, in addition to presenting recommendations for future practice and research.  相似文献

The use of peer assessment (PA) as an alternative form of evaluation method is reported to be helpful in learning and is increasingly being adopted in higher education settings. Through collecting data from 280 university students in Taiwan, a 20-item instrument was developed to investigate university students’ attitudes toward and perceptions of PA and online PA. Four subscales, Positive Attitudes, Online Attitudes, Understanding-and-Action, and Negative Attitudes, were extracted and reliabilities were calculated. Results revealed that participating students held positive attitudes toward the use of PA activities, but they viewed online PA as a technical tool to facilitate assessment processes, rather than as a learning aid. Male students had more positive attitudes toward PA than females did, and students with previous PA experiences had less negative attitudes toward PA. A majority of these students suggested that the PA score should be counted as a small part of the total course grade, and there was an effect of the perceived importance of PA score on students’ attitudes toward these four subscales.  相似文献

从大学新生中抽取实验组、对照组各10人,对实验组进行以生命观为主题的团体辅导,以修订后的《生活目的测试》(PIL)量表为评估工具,对实验组和对照组进行前后测,并对实验组进行追踪测试,以探讨有针对性的团体辅导对大学生生命观的影响。结果显示"PIL总分"、"生命热诚"、"自主感"、"对未来期待"4个因子立即性辅导效果显著,"PIL总分"、"生命热诚"、"对未来期待"3个因子持续性辅导效果显著。团体辅导使大学生对生命有了一些全新的感悟,生命观变得更加积极。对团体辅导的方案以及活动安排上的优化可以使效果更佳。  相似文献

This article aims to investigate drinking patterns among business students, and dispositional (e.g., demographics) and social factors (e.g., norms of alcohol use) that may explain differences in alcohol consumption between business and non-business students. Students in Bergen, Norway, were invited to participate in a survey. The sample consisted of 11,236 students. Binary logistic regressions were run to examine the relationship between institutional affiliation and alcohol use when controlling for covariates associated with alcohol use. Business students had higher alcohol consumption than other students, and shared several dispositional and social factors known to predict alcohol use. The heightened alcohol use among business students can partly be explained by dispositional factors, but seems mostly related to social norms and attitudes.  相似文献

International college students studying in North America endure substantial psychological stress in their daily lives. The nature and function of stressors in the context of international college students' subjective appraisal are discussed and analyzed using Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) concept of stress. 研究采用问卷法,以5·12地震灾区的285名地震亲历者以及内蒙古、上海两地282名非地震亲历者为样本,考察两类人群对地震和水灾的乐观偏差,结果表明:被试对地震具有Ⅰ型和Ⅱ型乐观偏差,对水灾具有工型乐观偏差;被试对地震的乐观偏差显著高于对水灾的乐观偏差;地震亲历者的Ⅱ型乐观偏差显著高于非地震亲历者,而在Ⅰ型乐观偏差上,地震亲历者与非地震亲历者并无显著性差异。在此基础上,分析乐观偏差存在的利弊,提出应对突发性事件的观念取向应该是适当乐观与危机意识共存。  相似文献

This study examined relationships among perfectionism, acculturation, and stress in 76 Asian international students. Results showed that perfectionism and acculturation predicted stress, together accounting for 50% of the variance in stress. Furthermore, acculturation explained students' experience of stress above and beyond perfectionism, and 1 specific acculturation variable examined, perceived prejudice, revealed the strongest relationship with stress. Implications for providing counseling services to international students and for future research are described.  相似文献

近代中国,因西方文化的介入,作为中国传统文化代表的经典戏曲昆曲曾经历衰落和黯淡。2011年,青春版《牡丹亭》走进杭州数所高校引起强烈反响。笔者以问卷调查形式在浙江大学进行了关于大学生对昆曲所持态度的研究,从对昆曲的了解水平、接受态度、受欢迎的传播方式等诸多方面展开了调查。调查结果显示,大学生对于昆曲的认识和热情程度不容乐观,高校中的戏曲环境仍欠成熟,昆曲本身方言式的念白、复杂的表演程式及缓慢的节奏是造成大学生对于昆曲难有热情的原因。青春版《牡丹亭》以旧剧新编、现代的舞台效果、合理的演出场次安排以及走进高校与年轻学生零距离的宣传等优点,在年轻人中取得了"传统艺术的现代化成功",对于传播传统文化艺术有着借鉴启示作用。  相似文献

International students experience significant difficulties as they adjust to the dominant culture in the United States. However, there is a substantial gap between the reported academic and sociological distress these students experience and their help‐seeking behaviors.
