This article reports on a 2008 online survey about library services to the poor conducted by the American Libarary Association (ALA) Office for Literary and Outreach Services (OLOS) committee. The survey is precedent to the preparation of an ALA action agenda for library work with poor persons that is going to occur through 2009‐10. Though limited in its scope and participation, the survey results do suggest many of the persistent issues that are involved in the development of successful library services for poor persons.  相似文献

图书馆是体现社会包容的重要载体。社会包容的核心旨趣是宽容与公正。社会包容与社会排斥相对立。在图书馆管理和服务中,避免政治排斥、人格排斥、设施排斥和制度排斥,才能体现社会包容理念。图书馆社会责任具有两方面的内涵:一是消极意义上的图书馆社会责任;二是积极意义上的图书馆社会责任。图书馆社会责任的内容包括法律责任、伦理责任和纯义务性责任。体现社会包容,承担社会责任,都是图书馆社会价值的基本表现,但两者之间却存在冲突现象。如何解决这种冲突,是摆在人们面前的重要问题。  相似文献

Librarians have different perceptions on the employment of social media in library services. This research focused on investigating the perceptions that academic librarians in Ghana hold about the employment of social media in providing reference and user services. A quantitative research approach employing a Likert-type questionnaire was used in soliciting the views of 99 librarians from six top public and private universities in Ghana on their perspective on the use of social media in providing reference and user services. The findings of the study indicate mixed perceptions on the application of social media in reference and user services. These are variously attributed to lack of skills on the part of librarians to use social media, low bandwidth and poor internet connectivity, and inadequate support/motivation from parent institutions among others. As a result, librarians found the traditional mode of service delivery more comfortable, though they knew the importance of social media in their services. The study recommended, among others, development of skills and sensitization workshops to whip up interest in librarians to use social media in reference and user services.  相似文献

This paper is based on Helen Kiely’s Masters dissertation on MA in Library and Information Service Management, successfully completed at the University of Sheffield in 2018. The aim of the study was to explore the extent to which users of a health care library service understood common terminology used by clinical librarians/information professionals. A survey was developed based on the terminology used for common services and was distributed to staff and students at an acute NHS Foundation Trust. One hundred and eight people participated over a four week period and were asked to provide definitions to the terms. Analysis of the responses for accuracy and common themes indicates that jargon can be a barrier to user access and recommendations are made with respect to the need for outreach to users and the language used in this practice for creating better accessibility. Library orientations do their part to familiarize students with information literacy, and how the library fits within university life. But what if an orientation could give a student a strong introduction to their academic librarians? Research in academic libraries has noted that library anxiety remains a continual problem among current students. Valparaiso University librarians created the Get to Know Your Librarian program, which sought to make librarians accessible. Using humor and casualness, incoming students were “introduced” to librarians through a series of fun facts. This simple program was successful in helping alleviate incoming students’ library anxiety before their first semester.  相似文献

公共图书馆是体现社会包容的"场所",是国家为保障公民获取知识自由而设置的专业信息机构。我国公共图书馆管理与服务过程中存在的若干社会排斥现象违背了图书馆社会包容理念,限制了公众对知识的自由、平等获取。因此,公共图书馆应制订相关的职业规范和服务准则,确立其负有社会包容的责任和使命,培育公共图书馆社区服务意识,在资源与服务配置上向被社会排斥人群倾斜,倡导并重新评估"机会平等",以此促进图书馆社会包容理念的推广与实践。  相似文献

Summary

Student athletes' schedules can be very tightly structured around classes, homework, study, practice, and athletic events. As a result, they do not have the same freedom with their schedules as the average student. A library outreach program was developed at Valdosta State University to target the Department of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, and specifically the student athletes. The goals of this program are: (1) to provide the Department faculty and staff with a library contact or liaison, (2) to help student athletes learn to use the Library more effectively under pressure, thus relieving some of the stress they face with their demanding schedules, and (3) to make the library a less intimidating, more welcoming environment. The Library's outreach program is incorporated into the Department's NCAA CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success) program and includes tailored library instruction sessions. CHAMPS, as designed by the NCAA, does not currently include a library skills component.1 Library outreach may be defined as any activity or program such as tailored library instruction that is created “to meet the information needs of an unserved or inadequately served target group.”2 Outreach activities often focus on a specific user population such as high school students, off-campus students, international students, non-traditional students, and even faculty, and are often a method of promoting the use of the library.3 Providing outreach to student athletes is not well documented, however, there are a handful of universities with some type of outreach program to student athletes in place.4  相似文献

与社会、经济和政治环境变化相适应,图书馆弱势群体服务的研究经历了数次话语体系更迭:19 世纪末20世纪前期公共图书馆为劳工阶级服务阶段,20世纪60至80年代以弱势群体服务为核心的社区图书馆运动和图书馆社会责任大讨论阶段,20世纪90年代信息贫穷或数字鸿沟与管理主义话语体系下的图书馆服务阶段,20世纪90年代末至今反社会排斥和社会包容话语体系下图书馆弱势群体服务阶段.研究话语体系的变化反映了图书馆实践领域关注焦点的变更,但话语体系的更迭并没有改变其反映问题的本质.倡导和实践图书馆服务的平等获取和包容性,争取为社会底层人群或弱势群体提供服务,在欧美公共图书馆发展的各个时期是一以贯之的.  相似文献

Abstract

The number of military veterans taking advantage of post-911 educational benefits has increased significantly, and institutions of higher education have responded by creating veteran-friendly campuses. Accordingly, academic librarians have engaged in proactive, ongoing conversations about providing services to this unique student population. The authors went on reconnaissance to assess the needs of student veterans and their response to a recently created veterans lounge space in the library. The information gathered from this survey can help provide insight and possible strategies to improve library outreach and services.  相似文献

Adult learners are returning to college in increasing numbers. The Marywood University Library has seen an influx, particularly in the university's Master of Social Work program, where many adult learners are reentering school after years of absence. Reaching out to this user group, the library initiated a personal librarian service through a Course Management System, a familiar online environment for these students. A survey was conducted to determine whether library help delivered in this way is favored among adult learners.  相似文献

Public libraries across the country design and deliver programs for military veterans and their families, often collaborating with other organizations and agencies. The examples were assembled from both general and specialized interviews with librarians, and literature and Internet searches, with summaries of programs assembled and written by multiple researchers. The specific limitations on the listing in this article are clearly outlined in the first section. Overall, however, the article provides a good introductory overview of what’s going on in veteran’s programs and services in America’s public libraries in over seventy libraries in forty states. We hope this list of what public libraries have organized or are doing will supply other public librarians with ideas on how to provide new services or enhance their existing ones.  相似文献

近30年有关"高校图书馆社会化服务"的研究呈现三个波峰:1994~1996年、2002~2004年、2008~2010年,研究内容包括高校图书馆向社会开放的必要性、优劣势、服务内容、服务模式、服务原则及评价。高校图书馆社会化服务的理论与实践也呈现出阶段性特点,这是由思想观念、经济发展状况等多种因素决定的。我国高校图书馆社会化服务内容、层次、门槛及开放规模与国外相比仍有差距,应借鉴国外经验,让更多的人享受开放的益处。  相似文献

处于生活贫困状态下的农民,往往也是知识贫困者。农民的知识贫困主要是基础教育、公共文化服务的供给不足与分配不公造成的。在文化上加大财政投入、推进制度创新、吸纳社会力量参助,这是改变农民知识贫困的基本途径之一。图书馆应该坚持“普遍均等、实效持续”的原则,采用各种切实有效的手段为广大农民提供知识援助。  相似文献
