Collection Development Assessment for New Collection Development Librarians

A number of articles have been written in the past several years that provide practical advice for librarians new to collection development, particularly in terms of understanding terminology, learning collection development processes, and gaining familiarity with one's library and institution. This article furthers this discussion, but with attention to working in collection development within the OhioLINK consortial environment. In order to thrive in this environment, new bibliographers are benefited by becoming familiar with and using data such as usage statistics, consortium reports, and peer institution statistics to develop and expand collections in one's assigned disciplines. Attention is also given to creating subject collection statements, faculty networking, and colleague assistance. The writer, himself relatively new to collection development, provides insights and perspectives on these matters, chiefly applicable to others new to collection development.

针对目前文献价格上涨与文献经费紧张的矛盾日益突出的现状，阐述了文献传递数据在藏书建设中的作用。并以武汉大学图书馆文献传递数据为例针对外文期刊订购进行了研究。     

Collection Development Policies in Public Libraries in Australia: A Qualitative Content Analysis

The role that public library collection development policies play in guiding selectors and informing users has been promoted as a pillar of good professional practice. While these policies purport to open up the methods and the criteria used in selection so as to promote transparency and a sense of professional objectivity, how they actually are developed and put into practice has remained largely implicit in the research literature. This analysis revealed that policies tended to focus on local issues and remained heavily materials focused. How collections are developed to support user’s information needs and substantive issues associated with topicality are largely unarticulated.     

New Tools for Collection Development

Abstract

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library's merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections.     

Collection Development and Censorship in Torah Studies Libraries in Israel

A Torah studies library is a type of Jewish library specializing in biblical and rabbinical literature. One of its characteristics is its process of collection development and censorship. This study primarily aims to discuss the collection development policies in Torah libraries, particularly censorship implemented as part of a policy, with an emphasis on how prohibited books are rejected. A qualitative-narrative research technique was used, allowing the viewpoints of the “selectors” to be examined. To present a broad picture, various types of Torah studies libraries were chosen for the study.

大数据时代,网络学术资源建设快速发展,大有取代数字图书馆之势。在这样一种背景下,数字图书馆建设要有大数据思维:在资源建设方面,要拓展资源范畴,增加资源整合的广度,加强资源组织加工的深度;在技术应用方面,重视语义技术,加强聚类技术的应用,广泛应用数据分析技术,提升检索技术与水平;在服务方面,丰富数字图书馆服务产品,服务模式由被动、等待、共性化转向积极主动、自动推送和个性化。未来数字图书馆要跳出传统资源建设的框架,树立全方位服务的理念,提供全资源服务,拓展服务方式和传播形式,数字图书馆馆员应该立志成为数据分析家。

大数据时代,数据规模爆炸性增长,传统的数据处理技术已无法满足需求。“图”这一抽象数 据能够充分表示数据间的关系。现实世界中的许多应用场景可以用图结构来表示。文中结合大数据的 特点,从图数据管理与图数据处理机制两个方面,综述了大数据背景下图数据处理的关键问题。总结 了当前的研究现状和进展,分析了存在的挑战性问题,并深入探讨了未来的研究方向。     

大数据分析与情报分析关系辨析

近年来,包括大数据分析在内的大数据理念和方法引起了图书情报界的密切关注,成为情报学的热点话题之一。通过对比分析,发现大数据分析与情报分析有着天然的联系,两者既有共性,又存在着一定的差异。共性表现在看重对数据的定量分析,关注多源数据融合和强调相关性分析三个方面。同时,两者在数据对象、数据规模、分析任务与分析时机等方面又各具特色。本文认为,应该充分认识这些共性与差异,把情报分析的特色与优势发挥好,以迎接大数据带来的挑战。表1。参考文献25。     

大数据时代的公权力监控与个人隐私保护

公权力监控与个人隐私保护是一个自从有了国家便存在的矛盾,只要国家还存在,这个矛盾就不会消失。整个人类社会就是在双方的不停博弈中不断前行。但是大数据时代的到来加剧了这一矛盾的冲突。公权力在大数据时代到来后,回去公民隐私的手段与成都都空前加强。这虽然对维护整个社会治安稳定做出了巨大的贡献,但是也严重的侵害了公民的个人隐私,引发了人们对个人权利的严重忧虑。两者间具有本质矛盾,但邮费不可调和。本文旨在探讨一种公权力监控的运用方式,时期既能满足我国维护社会长治久安的政治目的,又能使民众最大程度的保护个人隐私并接受其对个人隐私的合理利用。

知识计算是传统人工智能研究的一个重要领域。知识计算研究知识的表达、管理、获取和使用的计算问题。本文探讨了大数据时代,知识计算技术面临新的挑战和机遇,分析了知识的表达、获取和计算在大数据时代的新需求,以及知识计算模型和方法可能需要的新的突破以解决大数据的动态、开放、异构、海量等性质所带来的知识计算问题,提出了开放性、一致性、完备性和上下文等几个大数据知识计算所面临的关键问题。     

Revisiting an Abandoned Practice: The Death and Resurrection of Collection Development Policies

Academic libraries have a long tradition of endorsing and creating written collection development policies to communicate, both internally and externally, their dynamic collection practices. As revealed by a literature search, academic libraries, over time, appear to have abandoned this practice. This article documents how Texas A&M University Libraries embraced the ambitious task of resurrecting written collection development policies and, as part of this process, assessed the current state of collection development, systematically planned for future collection growth, and identified emerging fields of research requiring additional collection support. This process also undertook the integration of collection development into the organizational culture of the libraries. Reflecting on this process, the authors present the case for creating and maintaining written collection development policies in academic libraries.     

Big Data: An Introduction for Librarians

Modern life produces data at an astounding rate and shows no signs of slowing. This has lead to new advances in data storage and analysis and the concept of “big data,” that is, massive data sets that can yield surprising insights when analyzed. This column will briefly describe what big data is and why it is important. It will also briefly explore the possibilities and problems of big data and the implications it has for librarians. A list of big data projects and resources is also included.

E-Book Collection Development: Formalizing a Policy for Smaller Libraries

Three librarians from two similar but unaffiliated state colleges—both members of larger university systems—discuss how they confronted similar e-book acquisition concerns. In this session, presenters described how they took two different approaches toward revising their collection development policies, economizing their processes and streamlining their workflows. The presenters discussed patron-driven acquisition e-book programs, as well as the importance of communication and collaboration among library personnel. By formalizing the purchasing decisions of electronic formats, libraries can provide the structure needed to support changing staff roles and shrinking resources, as well as address important related issues such as accessibility and timeliness.     

浅谈走在大数据中的电子商务

随着电子商务的出现,人们的消费模式逐渐被改善,从传统实体店购物至货物到家的便捷服务,电子商务大大扭转了人们的购物方式。而近几年“大数据”这个热词的出现,使得传统的电子商务再一次发生了革命性的转变。消费者的购买意愿在执行之前已经被准确预测,关联商品或相关服务也在及时推送给消费者。这并不是什么神奇的猜测,而是来自于大数据的作用。庞大的数据在分析和处理之后会得到一种价值,而将这种价值与企业的行为进行无缝对接并创造出高效益才是核心所在。本文从技术和价值的角度,通过对大数据在电子商务中所产生影响的分析,简单概括了其发展过程。     

Representation in the Collection: Assessing Coverage of LGBTQ Content in an Academic Library Collection

Abstract

Academic library collections have been built and shaped by a focus on dominant voices and perspectives. In order for collections to reflect the value librarianship places on diversity as well as represent multiple perspectives and serve users of diverse backgrounds and identities, collections need to be assessed for coverage of content related to diversity. This article discusses the challenges inherent in engaging in such an assessment, discusses collection assessment methods, and describes an analysis performed on the Penn State University Libraries collections focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer content.
