认为图书馆理事能够强化凝聚力与向心力、推动工作贯彻落实、提升社会影响力。美国图书馆界对图书馆理事应当履行的职责与义务做出了明确规定,并以纽约州为例,指出图书馆理事应当受到公共图书馆治理法案、教育法案、“公共”机构涉及法案、理事会工作涉及规定、任职图书馆机构出台政策以及职业道德的规范与制约。美国图书馆协会下的图书馆联合协会、纽约州层面的图书馆理事协会及纽约图书馆理事网站为图书馆理事的职业发展提供了交流、培训的平台。以此为借鉴,中国公共图书馆理事会制度的实践探索不应忽视图书馆理事这一特殊队伍群体的建设发展。  相似文献

Our classic article for this issue represents one of the first if not the first working application of punched cards in a public library. It is interesting to compare some of the characteristics of the state of the art in 1941 with those of today's "automated" circulation systems. This early system isn't really much different from some of the more recent "newer" systems. This article also illustrates how important it is to carefully select the library's board of trustees (see paragraph two). The IBM Corporation installed the equipment without charge and covered all costs during the long period of experimentation. Margery Quigley was librarian of the Endicott (New York) Public Library from 1918 to 1924, and since 1927 had been librarian of the Montclair (New Jersey) Public Library when she wrote this article in 1941.  相似文献

Public Library trustees in Texas resemble trustees nationally in that they are appointed primarily by a public official or governing body; they see their major duties connected with decisions on policies, funding, and librarian employment; their tenures are short (the majority five years or less); and they attend monthly meetings. Differences from the national scene exist in the areas of sex distribution (the majority are women); membership in national and state trustee organizations (very low for Texas); presence of formal bylaws (94–5 percent of libraries); and education (lightly regarded for both new and continuing trustees).  相似文献

The Alabama Public Library Service, the state library agency, has implemented several statewide programs for the improvement of local public library collections. These include the development of resource sharing tools such as union lists, workshops, personnel grants, and funds for book purchases. Reference workshops offer an important continuing education option for librarians. The planning, organization, and implementation of an assignment based program for the reference personnel of the Queens Borough Public Library is described. Participant evaluations are analyzed and presented with recommendations for future learning activities. The Future Voices in Public Services column is a forum for students in graduate library and information science programs to discuss key issues they see in academic library public services, to envision what they feel librarians in public service have to offer to academia, to tell us of their visions for the profession, and to tell us of research that is going on in library schools. We hope to provide fresh perspectives from those entering our field, in both the United States and other countries. Matthew Baker is a recent graduate of the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS). Here he makes the case for librarians to recognize both the strengths and limitations of technology, and to guide students toward that recognition as well.

Founded in 1902, Simmons GSLIS (http://www.simmons.edu/gslis/) is one of the country's oldest library and information science programs. With campuses in Boston and South Hadley, Mass., the school is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the Top 10 in the nation. GSLIS offers master's and doctoral programs, along with postmaster's licensure and certificate opportunities and continuing education workshops. Master's degree students can choose concentrations in Archives Management, School Library Teacher, or Library and Information Science; doctoral students focus either on Library and Information Science or Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions.

This paper examines the current status of continuing education courses offered by American schools of Library and Information Science. Special emphasis is given to offerings for librarians working in collection development and acquisitions. Alternative mechanisms for delivering continuing education courses to the profession are discussed. A survey of 47 American schools reveals that only 8.9% of the 280 continuing education workshops fit the traditional definition of technical services. Suggestions are made as to how practitioners and educators can increase the continuing education offerings available for technical services, collection development, and acquisitions librarians.  相似文献

The Jay Jordan IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program, jointly sponsored by the American Theological Library Association, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and OCLC, provides early career development and continuing education for library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies. The program's history, selection process, and curriculum are described in detail. The article discusses the establishment of the Harry S. Truman Library, the initial challenge to the Library staff of processing President Truman's papers, the development of the first museum exhibits, Truman's dedication to teaching young people about American history, the support given to Library programs by the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, the development of Library programs from the 1960s through the early 1990s, and the Library's current focus on planning and building for the future. This article reviews the work of the Library Continuing Education Summit organized by the Tennessee State Library and Archives in 2008 and the subsequent actions to implement the recommendations of that Summit. The summit objectives were to identify library training needs and opportunities, including those that could be shared by multi‐type libraries; to avoid duplication and encourage collaboration; to do better marketing and to create a centralized continuing education calendar for all libraries in the state. The author reviews these objectives and notes substantial specific organizational follow up to implement the recommendations in order to improve library continuing education. In spite of a wavering economy, the Summit has brought major changes in the organization and delivery of CE within Tennessee, including new e‐learning options, attention to the quality of instruction and how to improve operations and service delivery.  相似文献

This study investigated health sciences librarians'' knowledge and skill-based readiness to partner on sponsored research involving human participants. The authors developed and deployed, at two time points, a web-based survey on nine indicators of research activities with response choices reflecting the transtheoretical model of stages of behavior change. Librarians with research experience or membership in the Medical Library Association Research Section reported higher levels of having completed indicators. Our results suggest that creating awareness in precontemplation responders could encourage skill development. Mentoring and continuing education could support librarians who are contemplating or preparing to perform indicator activities.  相似文献

As a result of suggestions from the American Library Association (ALA) the Division of Library and Information Science (DLIS) program at St. John's University implemented an end-of-program electronic portfolio (ePortfolio) requirement. The purpose of this ePortfolio is to provide information on student proficiency in the eight ALA core competencies to our external accrediting agency—the ALA Committee on Accreditation (CoA). This article will discuss how a Library and Information Studies (LIS) faculty member and a New Media and Communications Specialist worked together in developing the ePortfolio as an assessment tool for ALA reaccreditation within an online LIS program.  相似文献

When the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO), Ohio's chapter of the Association of Academic & Research Libraries (ACRL), began planning for its 2020 conference, the COVID-19 pandemic hadn't yet begun. However, when COVID-19 arrived, the Conference Planning Committee was quickly compelled to make decisions about whether to move the conference online, how to deliver it in an online format, and how to help ALAO members adapt to the change. This article explores how decisions to move a conference online can be made and implemented while meeting the needs of the conference-planning organization and its members.  相似文献

Library development in Bangladesh is closely related to the development of library education in the country. The rapid growth of libraries in the mid-twentieth century resulted in the need to initiate education and training programs for library professionals. Library Science training began in 1952 with a three-month training program for library staff at Dhaka University Library. This led to the establishment in 1959 of a one-year post-graduate diploma course at Dhaka, with Masters and Doctorate degrees being added later. Since being instituted, these programs have produced 1,081 post-graduate diplomas, 815 Masters degrees and four Ph.D's. From the 1960s to the 1980s, library staff training programs also began to be offered by what is now the National Administration Education Management, the Bangladesh Library Council, four teachers training colleges and the Library Association of Bangladesh. The present state of the 19,130 libraries in Bangladesh is discussed in relation to their total personnel of 7,789. To deal with this shortage of professional, trained library personnel, a nationwide policy for a network of library systems and the expansion of current library education programmes by instituting departments of Library and Information Science in all general universities is proposed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Given the many changes in our students and their study and research practices, libraries are finding it necessary to seek new ways to reach these students. The Undergraduate Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign created a new model to do so. Librarian's Office Hours are a hybrid of reference and instructional services that fulfill the dual purposes of meeting the needs of term paper research counseling and library workshops. This article discusses the strategies involved in the creation and implementation of this service and examines suggestions for the future of such a service.  相似文献
