Financial challenges in higher education: community college leadership style and ranking

A large number of new community college presidents will be hired in the next 5 years due to vacancies. New leaders must be prepared to lead their institutions through the challenges facing community colleges. Forty-one community college presidents in North Carolina participated in our research (70.7% response rate). We found that community college presidents’ perceptions of their management styles all fall within the “team management” orientation according to the Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid (Blake & Mouton, 1964). We then examined the financial management challenges faced by community college presidents and found empirical evidence regarding how community college presidents rank six of the most critical financial challenges identified in the literature. Presidents’ rankings of the six most critical financial challenges showed that the three most pressing concerns are maintaining student access during times of increasing educational costs, managing enrollment during times of decreasing state funding, and lowering costs without damaging academic quality.

The demand for community college education

This article describes a model of Community College (CC) enrollment which is tested using cross-sectional data for the 1969–1970 academic year. The sample consists of 126 relatively homogeneous CCs divided into sixty-two separate markets. Tuition, income, proximity of four-year schools, and the age of a CC are found to have significant influences on enrollment.An estimate is made of the marginal cost to a CC of attracting more students by lowering tuition.

作为美国社区学院主要职能之一的职业教育在社区学院的百年历史中发挥了举足轻重的作用。本文追述了职业教育的发展历史，分析了职业教育在课程设置、教学方法和师资建设等三个方面的特色，探讨了社区学院职业教育对我国高等职业技术教育的启示。     

System transition in Japanese short‐term higher education: what future for the Japanese junior college in crisis?

The uniquely Japanese institution of the tanki daigaku (two‐year university) known as ‘junior college’ in English was seen as Japan's answer to increasing participation in higher education. Initially established on a provisional basis in 1950, becoming permanent in 1965, they were the higher education institution (HEI) of choice of almost 500,000 students a year at their peak in 1995. Demographic changes after 1992 brought about a buyers' market for higher education with institutions in aggressive competition for students, a battle in which the tanki daigaku seems destined to be defeated. This paper examines the options available to junior colleges in crisis and in so doing identifies a number of features of a virtually universal system of higher education which raise issues for other advanced societies grappling with massification and commodification in their own higher education systems. The paper reviews the literature in this area, as well as drawing on a year of participant observation as an associate professor from 2000–2001.     

Investigating classroom community in higher education

The purpose of this research was to demonstrate an empirical relationship between classroom community and students' achievement goals in higher education, and to offer a possible explanation for differences in this relationship for cooperative and non-cooperative classrooms. Structural equation modeling techniques revealed that students' perceptions of interactive learning significantly mediated the relationship between students' goals and their sense of classroom community, but only for classrooms that used cooperative learning techniques. In the traditional lecture-style course surveyed, students' feelings of classroom community and interactive learning were significantly lower than in cooperative learning classrooms. Finally, while mastery goals were significantly higher for cooperative learning students, performance-approach goals were significantly higher for traditional lecture students.

＂应用型本科教育＂,是对大众化阶段高等教育多样性认识上的深化和还原,是对定位不清的本科院校其人才培养目标的明晰和纠正,而并非凭空创造出来的一种高教模式。它不是人才类型或院校类型,而是一种教育产品类型。发展＂应用型本科教育＂不是新建本科院校的专利,任何符合条件的院校都可以实施＂应用型本科教育＂。     

美国社区学院与中国高职教育的比较研究

经过发展与完善,职业教育发展水平较高的美国社区学院基本做到了教育社会化和社会教育化的辩证统一,承担了美国高等教育大众化的主要任务,也成为美国终身学习体系的平台.在政府重视、教师队伍建设以及民众参与程度等方面中国高职教育与美国社区学院教育有一定差别,建议中国高职教育借鉴美国社区学院经验,让高职教育、成人教育及教育服务形成合力,促进高等职业教育的发展.
