Tracking Trends in the Future of Worthington Library

This article is a compilation of staff ideas about possible items to weave into the Worthington, Ohio, Public Library's 2010–2012 Strategic Plan. This “Trend Tracking” is accomplished in seven policy areas: (1) Early childhood literacy, (2) future role of libraries, (3) sustainability/green initiatives, (4) staff development, (5) fund-raising, (6) programming and outreach, and (7) other. Staff consulted a variety of periodicals, Web sites, and library literature to assess four elements of their suggested trend: (1) application to Worthington Libraries, (2) impact on patrons, (3) impact on staff, and (4) relevant Web site or bibliographic links that served as the source or enrichment of the suggestion. This article provides library professionals with a rare opportunity to observe the internal thinking of a library workgroup other than their own.     

澳大利亚国家图书馆志愿者服务实践及对我国的启示

文章在概述澳大利亚国家图书馆志愿者服务活动的基础上,从志愿者服务内容与时间、招募与培训、权利与义务、评价与协议等方面详细介绍其实践情况,通过分析指出我国应积极弘扬志愿者服务文化、建立完善的志愿者管理制度并且重视与志愿者的多角度互动。     

我国不同区域民众利用公共图书馆状况调查研究

就公共图书馆服务的利用情况对全国24个省份的城乡民众进行问卷调查,从不同区域民众利用公共图书馆的比率、对图书馆位置的了解情况、不经常利用图书馆的原因、公共图书馆存在的竞争优势等方面进行统计分析。结果表明,被调查者中经常利用（每月或每周都用）图书馆的人数占18.1%;“知道也去过”图书馆的人数占44.7%;有时间但不经常利用图书馆的3个主要原因为：附近没有、书籍少且更新不及时和缺乏宣传而不了解;认为公共图书馆吸引人的地方是有丰富的信息资源、免费的服务和环境优雅。最后归纳民众针对图书馆建设、馆藏与组织、服务、活动与讲座及宣传方面所提出的宝贵建议。     

The Future of Small Rural Public Libraries in America: A Report Prepared for the Board of the Langlois Public Library

This report by the director of a small public library examines multiple issues that face small and rural libraries in the age of big data, high expenses, and limited revenues. The author concludes that small libraries often have quite individual needs that must be met if the library is to be successful in its service mission, especially in this time of rapidly changing technology and a shifting demographic profile.     

基于资源利用分析的馆藏优化对策——以山西医科大学汾阳学院为例

充分利用馆藏资源为读者提供服务是高校图书馆工作的重要内容。以资源利用的原始数据为基础,通过对山西医科大学汾阳学院图书馆馆藏资源的利用情况进行统计分析和全面研究,针对读者需求,结合实际提出了馆藏优化对策。     

名人手稿馆元数据方案的设计

本文详细论述了上海图书馆名人手稿馆元数据方案的设计，首先说明了设计时的总体考虑、设计原则、设计流程及元数据方案针对的资源特点；然后简要介绍了最终成型的元数据方案，包括对方案性质的定位、方案的组成、方案的属性元素集、置标方案及著录规则等内容；最后提出了一些方案制定中的问题，期望能与国内同行共同商讨。     

Preparing for Renovation: Estimating Shelf Occupancy to Inform Decision Making Regarding the Redevelopment of Library Space

University Library at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is in the process of repurposing space currently occupied by the print collection. To prepare for further reallocation of library space, reliable estimates of stacks space were needed. Two members of the Access Services Team applied systematic random sampling to estimate existing—and anticipated—empty shelf space. Results indicate that more than 30% of the shelf space is empty, while over 25% is occupied by journals, most of which are available in electronic format. These estimates would be used to inform decision making about shifting and/or withdrawal of library materials in preparation for the renovation of additional library spaces. The data-gathering process as well as data analysis and application used during the project may be applicable in other academic libraries.
