Kent State University Libraries’ electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) cataloging process features contributions by authors, by the ETDcat application, and by catalogers. Who is doing what, and how much of it is findable in the library catalog? An empirical analysis is performed featuring simple frequencies within the KentLINK catalog, articulated by the use of a newly devised rubric. The researchers sought the degree to which the ETD authors, the applications, and the catalogers can supply accurate, findable metadata. Further development of combinatory cataloging processes is suggested. The method of examining the data and the rubric are provided as a framework for other metadata analysis.  相似文献

This article presents the results of a survey examining and comparing the metadata practices of academic and non-academic libraries regarding digital projects. It explores the types of metadata and vocabularies utilized, issues of interoperability, end-user-created metadata, and staffing for metadata planning and creation. Participants from 87 academic libraries and 40 non-academic libraries responded to the survey. The survey found that, despite their different environments, academic and non-academic libraries engage in similar metadata practices. The majority of the participating libraries have metadata librarians, who are the primary staff members responsible for all metadata activities. Academic libraries tend to use more metadata schemes, plan for metadata interoperability more frequently, and are more likely to have created new positions responsible for metadata for digital projects.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 元数据的开发与应用是文物数字化项目中的重要内容,也是项目成败的关键。随着国内文物数字化保护项目的进一步开展,在开放信息环境下构建一套完整的元数据开放机制,来保障文物元数据的有效性、扩展性和互操作能力显得尤其重要。[方法/过程] 借助生命周期理论,深入分析文物数字化保护项目中文物元数据的整个生命周期阶段以及各阶段所要解决的问题、参与的角色,提出不同生命周期阶段应采取的开放建设机制,并以台湾数位典藏国家型科技计划下的MAAT案例为例,对该项目的元数据工作内容进行分析,重点分析其中值得借鉴的部分。[结果/结论] 借助生命周期理论研究文物元数据制定及应用过程中的开放机制,具有很强的针对性和可操作性,能更好地保证整个运行周期中文物元数据的有效性、扩展性和互操作能力。  相似文献

Cataloging has seen substantial change since 2000, and the cataloging of maps, geospatial data, and other cartographic resources is no exception. The pace and scale of change, tied to the evolution of technology and cataloging/metadata standards, have been swift and broad. This paper highlights the most important changes and trends in the cataloging of cartographic resources during the first thirteen years of the twenty-first century through a review of the published literature and summarizes the state of map cataloging today. The digital library community is increasingly concerned with long-term preservation of digital materials. This concern presents an opportunity for strategic alliances between digital library units and preservation departments confronting the difficulties inherent in preservation reformatting of moving image materials. However, successful collaboration between digital library and preservation departments may require adjustments to the work practices of each group, including their creation and management of metadata and their definition of acceptable practice with respect to preservation reformatting.  相似文献

There are many automated serials control systems on the market today. SC350 is OCLC's entry. SC350 is an efficient and cost-effective way to handle serials in any type of library. The system is divided into modules, such as prediction, check-in, claiming routing, etc. Each module is clearly defined and easy to master. No system is flawless, however, and this includes SC350. Problems exist with the manual, but these are manageable. OCLC has shown a willingess to work with users in enhancing and correcting the SC350 software. Overall, the advantages in uslng SC350 for serials control far outnumber the disadvantages.  相似文献

As a growing number of disciplines adopt geospatial technologies in their research, the need for access to geospatial data, in a variety of formats, has grown dramatically. For librarians to meet this demand, we also need to provide preservation, curation, metadata, and discovery services. GeoHydra, our open source toolkit and set of practices, provides these services for Stanford's libraries. We incorporate a variety of geospatial content types from raster imagery to scientific vector data to georeferenced scanned maps, and provide a data model for repositories. We demonstrate the potential of a new architecture and practice for librarianship for geospatial data using the Hydra framework. The digitization and georeferencing of historic map collections, streamlining the acquisition and cataloging of vendor-supplied data, shared cataloging of geographic resources, and citation of geospatial research data are all examples of use cases that GeoHydra serves. Our metadata creation and management strategies implement the ISO (International Standards Organization) suite of geographic standards, and a specialized metadata schema for discovery. We developed XSLT transformations, auto-generation of core elements, unique URIs for place names, and cross-institutional data sharing. With these metadata we built a novel geoportal, EarthWorks, to provide end-user discovery for geospatial data layers using GeoBlacklight technology.  相似文献
