Retooling the Health Care Workforce in the Era of the Affordable Care Act: An Evaluation of an Advanced Certificate Program in Integrated Primary and Behavioral Health Care

The Affordable Care Act aims to increase affordable coverage, reduce overall costs, and improve health outcomes. To achieve these aims, new knowledge and skills must be built within the existing workforce. The purpose of this article is to examine the behavioral and organizational changes brought about by an educational program that aimed to retool the healthcare workforce for the implementation of integrated primary and behavioral healthcare models, with an added emphasis on prevention. Sixty-three participants of an Advanced Certificate Program completed 1 or more evidence-informed learning modules centered on integrated primary and behavioral health care. The vast majority of students who completed each of the 5 modules of the program reported acquiring new knowledge and skills. Student satisfaction of the program met or exceeded overall expectations. In addition, program participation has resulted in not only students’ intentions to change workplace practices but also actual implementation of workplace changes related to integrated care models. The Advanced Certificate Program appears to be a promising platform for service providers to align their knowledge and skills with the premises of current healthcare reform.     

American Revolution in Mental Health Care Delivery

Abstract

The American health care system is in the midst of unprecedented changes under the name of “managed care,” including preauthorizations for care, cost and outcome accountability, formulary regulations and restrictions, and corporation of multi-professional collaboration. How to prepare practitioners for new responsibilities in such a time of exponential change while preserving professional values and priorities is the rightful concern of mental health educators. This paper identifies and examines some fundamental professional skills as essential criteria for assessing the preparation of social work professionals for the new mental health care environment. They are (1) communication skills, (2) cultural competency, and (3) state-of-the-art treatment. The paper also discusses the manner in which rapid scientific advance, managed-care environments, and changing patterns of practice might test, extend and alter traditional pillars of professional competence. Finally, it is stressed that social work education should prepare professionals to distinguish between constructive and destructive aspects of managed care and should teach the moral imperative to confront harmful practices.     

Queering the Social Work Classroom: Strategies for Increasing the Inclusion of LGBTQ Persons and Experiences

ABSTRACT

The inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) perspectives and experiences in the social work classroom is necessary to adequately include LGBTQ students and prepare graduates to practice effectively. Drawing from queer theory as a theoretical framework and the authors’ experiences in practice and teaching/learning spaces with LGBTQ youth, this article offers practical strategies for creating classrooms inclusive of LGBTQ persons. Queering the classroom builds skills in students beyond practice with LGBTQ people and communities, thereby enhancing their capacity to engage diversity in practice more generally and to advance human rights and social justice.     

Preparing the Workforce to Prevent Behavioral Health Problems in Children and Youth

Educating social work students to address behavioral health needs of youth requires new training approaches that prepare students for interprofessional prevention-focused practice. This study examines whether a newly developed graduate certificate in integrated behavioral health effectively prepares students for prevention-focused behavioral health practice. A mixed method approach is used for evaluation, with 34 students completing the program from 2016 to 2017. Quantitative, qualitative, and employment data are analyzed to identify if and how the program prepares graduates for prevention practice. Results highlight key components that support student attainment of program competencies. Implications for curriculum development, field site training, and future research are discussed.     

Adapting an Interprofessional Training Model for Social Work Field Placements: An Answer for Better Mental Health Care Outreach for Older Adults in Primary Care

Professional shortages of geriatrically trained social workers pose a barrier to mental health care for older adults. Integrating graduate social work interns into primary care settings may increase the availability of trained social workers. However, few studies provide guidance on how to develop an interprofessional healthcare placement focused on the needs of older adults. This article discusses a model training program created by a psychology department (with input from social work faculty) that can be adapted by schools of social work. Client outcomes (n = 47) indicate significant improvement when using this model.

浅谈高职高专学校开设“健康与保健”课的重要意义

笔者对高职高专150名参加健康与保健知识学习的学生进行了调查和访问,总结出健康与保健课开设的意义在于:提高了学生身体素质、增强了学生保健意识,对促进大学生的身心健康有重要意义。

Photovoice as a Pedagogical Tool: Exploring Personal and Professional Values with Female Muslim Social Work Students in an Intercultural Classroom Setting

This article explores a classroom project in which we used photovoice as a pedagogical tool to enhance personal and professional self-awareness among female, Muslim, social work students in an intercultural classroom setting located in the Arabian Gulf. We begin with an overview and discussion of arts-based approaches to education and then provide examples from the literature on the use of photovoice in the classroom. Next, we discuss the necessity for self-awareness and self-reflection of personal and professional values in the social work classroom. We then provide details of our photovoice classroom project, which can be replicated by social work educators. Finally, we present examples of the class project, with a discussion and reflection on the process. We end the article with implications for social work pedagogy and a brief discussion of the use of photovoice for other applications.

The improvement of teaching has taken on heightened significance at the college level during the past five years. While research and scholarship remain priorities, the quality of teaching is being assessed through the documentation of teaching methods and strategies for active learning in the classroom. The product of super teaching, enhanced student participation, is a major reward. This article describes techniques for active learning and how students react to the use of a series of techniques to enhance their participation in the classroom.

青少年心理健康及其教育的整合研究是指在研究全程中系统考虑个体与群体、家庭与学校、内因与外因、心理与行为、问题与解决等多方面的条件、作用和效应,将其作为一个完整的功能系统进行理论与实践相结合的整体研究。研究内容主要包括理论依据、方法论原则、青少年心理问题、青少年心理健康素质培养模式及实施策略、青少年心理健康教育保障系统、青少年心理问题的教育对策等方面的系统研究。     

健康状况、社会保障与居家养老精神慰藉需求关系的实证研究

随着我国人口老龄化形势日趋严峻,养老问题日益凸显,老年人的精神慰藉需求日益提高。本文基于实证数据,描述了我国老年人对居家养老保障中精神慰藉需求的基本情况,采用logit模型对老年人居家养老精神慰藉需求的差异及影响因素进行了实证分析,并提出了完善居家养老服务的相关建议。

Teaching Interprofessional Practice: An Exploratory Course Assignment in Social Work and Speech Language Pathology

The professions of social work (SWK) and speech language pathology (SLP) often involve the provision of services to a diverse group of client populations in a variety of settings; this is particularly true when meeting the complex needs of children and their families. It is widely accepted that collaborative treatment approaches utilizing multidisciplinary teams is an effective method of practice when serving children who are developmentally delayed or challenged, yet there is little information in the literature regarding the quantity, quality, and efficacy of collaboration among professional disciplines serving child populations. This article addresses the identified gap in the pedagogical literature regarding collaborative case management approaches between social workers (SWKs) and speech language pathologists (SLPs) using a case example describing a child in need of early intervention services. Following the case study, sample assessment questions are provided (utilizing the professional standards from both SWK and SLP) as a measure of professional competency and practice behavior. Finally, a discussion of the practical ways SWKs and SLPs can be trained in order to be mutually supportive in meeting the needs of children requiring multidisciplinary services through a collaborative or trans-team approach is provided.     

糖尿病住院病人保健知识需求调查分析

目的：了解糖尿病住院病人对糖尿病保健知识的需求情况,从而进行合理的保健指导。方法：采用问卷方式对2009年7月至2009年12月南阳医专一附院内分泌科糖尿病住院病人进行调查,所得数据用SPSS13.0统计软件进行分析。结果：住院病人的糖尿病保健知识相对缺乏;了解糖尿病保健知识的愿望非常迫切;保健知识获得途径有限。结论：通过此次调查,掌握了糖尿病住院患者对糖尿病保健知识的需求情况,为进一步改进护理工作提供依据。     

高校保健体育与心理健康教育相结合的教学方式探讨

普通高校对部分身体异常和病、残、弱等特殊群体的学生开设保健体育课已成为学校体育教育的组成部分。当前,学校要贯彻全面发展的教育方针,体现教育的公平性,普及体育及其健身理论,就必须把握好保健班学生体育这一环节,保障其接受体育教育的均等机会。为此,笔者从构建高校保健体育课与心理健康教育相结合的必要性、保健体育课程与《学生体质健康标准》内容的编制等几方面提出了一点思考,为完善高校保健体育课教学提供参考。
