The history of Chinese painting and calligraphy mounting can date back to the Warring States period [475-221 BC]. This unique craftsmanship saw its heydays in theSong Dynasty [960-1279AD], thanks to the prosperous silk industry of the time. Moreover, Emperor Huizong, a great painter and calligrapher, was particularly fond of mounting, which gave rise to the development of the craftsmanship. Many master artists, like Mi Fu, Su Shi and Wang Shen, mounted artworks by themselves, brining prosperity to this traditional skill.

All problems of art are prob- lems of rhythm. Hence, in trying to understand Chineseart, we must begin with Chinese rhythm and the source of artistic inspiration. Allowing that rhythm is universal and that the Chinese do not own a monopoly of nature's rhythms, it is still possible to trace a differ- ence of emphasis. It has already been pointed out, in the discussion on the ideal of womanhood in China,

I was born in the countryside. I had a colorful and joyful childhood although my peasant parents couldn't give me an affluent life at that time, My toys were all handmade by myself such as catapults and powder guns. Like many kids of the time, I also liked to dissemble and re-assemble clocks and radios as a means of entertainment. Once I noticed a small bottle of ink with a brush pen in it at the window and showed strong interest in them. Since then, my poor handwriting left over everywhere in my house. My father was tolerant and never scolded at my unrestrained scrawling. That was my first experience in Chinese calligraphy which led me to a life destined for this magic art.

"After completing the Chinese calligraphy course, I have fallen love with this unique art. I have learned not only skills to use brushes, but also oriental philosophy and culture. Chinese calligraphy has made me understand better differences and similarities between eastern and western arts. Chinese calligraphy - its brushwork and structure, individual and whole, dry and wet, big and small, fast and slow, positive and negative, all are filled with philosophic mystery and human wisdom and show movement of human life, which can never be experienced in western fine arts. Chinese calligraphy has opened a door for me. Learning it will make me benefit in my whole life."

Painting on blue-and-white porcelain dates back to more than 700 years. Chinese elite painting is known for freehand brushwork, simplistic design and open-minded spirit, which are also characteristics of porcelain painting. In traditional Chinese painting, every brushwork is a design unit forming an integral whole while featuring independent aesthetic values. For porcelain painting, the painter uses the Chinese calligraphic brush to draw on the water-absorptive body before the porcelain is glazed.

Embroidery is an art re-created on the basis of painting. With the import of Western culture and painting since the 1930s, Chinese people have gradually changed their aesthetic tendencies and as a result the art of embroidery has been remarkably transformed. Chinese embroiders have drawn upon from Western aesthetic concepts and painting techniques and developed a new type of stitching approach which is called "random stitching".
