远程开放教育教学管理模式改革的实践与反思

广播电视大学＂人才培养模式改革和开放教育试点＂项目是教育部组织实施的现代远程教育工程的重要组成部分,试点的目的是探索和构建现代远程教育条件下应用性高等专门人才培养模式的基本框架以及相应的教学模式、教学管理模式和运行机制。本文反思了陕西广播电视大学在远程开放教育试点工作中开展教学管理模式改革的实践探索,提出了电大现代远程开放教育教学管理模式的基本框架,分析了在教学管理实践中实施这一基本框架的措施和成效。     

Uncertainty in the real world

In this part of the article we have identified fuzzy uncertainty as being distinct from probabilistic uncertainty. We have understood the notion of a fuzzy set, and seen important operations that can be performed on such sets. Lastly, a geometrical interpretation of the fuzzy set and its attendant operations were discussed. In Part 2, we will develop a framework for reasoning based on fuzzy sets, and review a simple application.     

Preparing for the real world: A prelude to a fieldwork experience

This article discusses the challenges of self-directed learning and the benefits of thorough preparation of undergraduate students for an internship experience. It describes a course offered at a unit of the State University of New York that prepares students in criminal justice and human services for their required fieldwork experience, focusing on the component activities of the course and their educational rationale.

Learning to become a learning professional: reflections on one year of teaching

This research aims to study the ways in which a teacher learns through and about professional practice. Data presented here is drawn from one year of teaching and focuses on pedagogical practices, critical reflection upon those practices and the impact of the implementation of a new physical education syllabus in Maltese secondary schools. The study employs autoethnography to reveal thoughts, feelings and learning experienced by a new teacher implementing a new curriculum; in other words, I (Attard) am studying myself.

I start with my personal life. I pay attention to my physical feelings, thought, and emotions. I use what I call systematic sociological introspection and emotional recall to try and understand an experience I've lived through. Critical thinking in criminology: critical reflections on learning and teaching

Fostering critical thinking abilities amongst students is one component of preparing them to navigate uncertain and complex social lives and employment circumstances. One conceptualisation of critical thinking, valuable in higher education, draws from critical theory to promote social justice and redress power inequities. This study explored how students’ critical thinking developed in a discrete core unit of criminology. Second and third year students were invited to participate in the research. Participants wrote critical reflections on how their thinking about crime and criminal justice had developed throughout the unit. Analysis of responses indicated that certain topics were salient to students, offering a way to engage them in deeper thinking. Students’ critical reflections showed evidence of personally relevant meaning-making, including the development of more nuanced thinking about crime and justice, and more compassionate rationales for aspiring to careers within the field. Implications for learning and teaching critical thinking in criminology are discussed.     

Managing uncertainty in the real world

In Part 1 of this article we understood the idea of a fuzzy set. We also reviewed simple operations such as fuzzy set intersection, union, and complementation, and related these to geometry. In Part 2, we extend the idea of fuzzy sets to explain how we may develop systems that reason with fuzzy sets using fuzzy logic. The idea of extending fuzzy logic to fuzzy engineering and fuzzy function approximation is explored with a working example. It is hoped that readers will be provided with enough motivation to appreciate the use of fuzzy set theory for real world applications.     

Connecting students to the real world: Developing gifted behaviors through service learning

Learning in today's classrooms can be disconnected from students' real world experiences. Providing students the opportunity to address real‐world problems may provide avenues for students to engage in their communities while developing academic skills and knowledge. Additionally, for students whose interests are piqued by the nature of their community's problems, these activities have the potential to offer students meaningful, motivating work in a supportive environment. This article explores how providing students with interest‐based service‐learning opportunities may help them develop and demonstrate gifted behaviors. In addition, methods for integrating student interests and service‐learning projects are presented. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Sharing sociological stories: reflections on teaching sociology in prison

This paper reflects on an education programme aimed at addressing aspects of the diverse and disrupted educational backgrounds of women in a local prison. The programme, which has been primarily sociological in content, is designed to give participants some idea of what university education involves, but without any of its formal requirements. It has not run altogether smoothly. The problems encountered have prompted this reflection on the storytelling nature of the interaction between educator and participants, that is, on the narrative nature of both the lectures being given and the women's responses to them. This is explored in terms of Tennant's () notion of the situated self in adult education. It is argued that, where prison education is commonly a site of conflict between educational models aimed, at one limit, at correcting individual pathology and, at the other, at analysing oppressive social structures, the narrative approach adopted in this programme offers participants a middle way—an opportunity to reflect on the self in a way that locates their own experiences within wider social structures. The approach rests, however, on the ability of participants to construct narratives of their lives in relation to wider public narratives. It is argued that the different responses of young and older women to the programme (resistant and enthusiastic, respectively) may have arisen, at least in part, from their differential abilities to craft life stories in the context of the programme.     

A Bourdieusian approach to academic reading: reflections on a South African teaching experience

As in many other parts of the world, ‘academic literacy’ has emerged as both a concern and a contested concept in South African universities. In this article we focus specifically on academic reading, which we argue is a relatively underemphasized aspect of academic literacy. This article is the product of reflections on academic reading during and subsequent to the development and presentation of a postgraduate module presented at Stellenbosch University. It briefly explores the literature on academic literacy; develops the Bourdieusian perspective on academic reading that we used to develop the module; and concludes with a discussion of the module. Our intention was to make ‘reading as social practice’ more visible to students. Bourdieu's concepts of ‘competence’, ‘habitus’ and ‘field’ set the scene for a discussion of the role of reading in different disciples and more generally within the social sciences and humanities.     

Mystery novel reveals model for educators: reflections on teaching and learning

A narrative passage from a novel is used to explicate knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes of good teachers. Emphasis is on teacher–student interactions designed to facilitate a positive educational experience. Asserted strategies and principles of good teaching are supported by recent literature.     

关于大学英语阅读教学的思考

大学英语阅读教学对学生英语阅读理解能力的培养，应以培养学生的篇章处理技能为主，以语用能力的培养为辅。传统的大学英语阅读教学一般是将阅读材料(课文)当作语言规则运用的实例。对这种传统教学方法的变革势在必行。应立足于已经较为完备的教材，以篇章教学为核心，引导学生进一步掌握新的阅读方法。     

还课堂一个广阔的世界

《找春天》教学片断在教学《找春天》这一课时，我先播放音乐《春天在哪里》，然后说：“你们还记得这首歌吗?是的，春姑娘来了，她像一个害羞的小姑娘，遮遮掩掩，躲躲藏藏，她藏在哪儿呢?让我们一块去找春天吧!”形象的语言把学生导入课中。“春就藏在我们的课里，请同学们仔细地读读课，一边读一边感受春的气息。”
