On the perspective of psychoanalytic criticism, three human psyche models propounded by Freud,Jung and Lancan were employed to reveal the psychological trace of the tragic character, the grandmother in The Acorn-gatherer.Back to the country life in late Victorian England,a lonely elderly widow had to bring up her illegitimate grandson, but her grandson couldn’t bear her mistreatment, left home and died accidentally. The old grandmother bore the hardship strenuously but had to live her old and ailing days lonely which is like a candle guttering in the wind.Deluged with the social discrimination and bias led by the collective unconscious, her help doesn’t come from anyone in the utilitarian oriented grass roots.Nor does it come from the Lord’s real redemption owing to a country woman’s limited knowledge and inwardness.Under the great strain from the grey society, she was gradually distorted mentally. As a result, she was victimized by the grey tide of the society but she herself was a victimizing force to her grandson. The psychological exploration of the piteous victim can thoroughly interpret the author’s implication,i.e.condemning the evils of the society and man’s wicked nature.  相似文献

The Ballad of the Sad Café is one of McCullers’masterpieces. By depicting the triangle love story among the main char?acters—Miss Amelia, hunchbacked Cousin Lymon and Marvin Macy, the novella reveals the incredible complexity of human na?ture. By analyzing the absurd town, Miss Amelia’s free choices and the hellish relationship between its main characters from the Existentialist perspective, the main propositions of Existentialism have also been vividly reflected and also help to reveal the philo?sophical and social realistic significances behind the novella.  相似文献

In A Room of One’s Own,Virginia Woolf argued her famous proposition that a woman needed to have a room of her own to achieve literary autonomy, and laid the foundation for present-day feminist criticism.Yet the author believes that economic independent does not foster women’s identity with certainty. In this thesis, the author explores the crucial place of spiritual and economic independence in building up women’s autonomy through analyzing Michael Cunningham Pulitzerwinning work The Hours, which he draws inventively on the life of Virginia Woolf and her work Mrs.Dalloway.  相似文献

We humans are perennially searching for new sources of energy. This is because we are puny creatures but our dreams are big. Our physical prowess is limited, but we want to move mountains, change the course of rivers, and fly to the stars. We need a genie to come out of the proverbial bottle at the flick of a finger and do our bidding! Energy is such a genie and we never seem to have enough of it. This article is devoted to a short history of our search for new sources of energy including the latest quest-to light and sustain starfire (the fire of nuclear fusion) in the laboratory. This search has led to several encounters with Agni, the Lord of Fire in one of his manifestations, in fashioning fuels for storage and future use or in burning up fuels for energy release. As we trace this history, we stand in awe of Agni and his various manifestations and cannot help but follow our ancestors in singing a hymn in his praise-hence the title of this article.  相似文献

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan’s attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.  相似文献
