Interagency public access conference: Summary report

The article analyzes the third in a series of interagency workshops whose purpose has been to develop a policy framework for improving public access to agency information. The agencies are clearly demonstrating a determination to assume a leadership role on information policy issues.     

Collection development in a multi-system cooperative: An acquisition policy and plan

Four libraries in Colorado through a cooperative agreement (Arapahoe Public Access to Libraries, or APAL) hired a contractor to produce a plan for cooperative collection development and acquisitions. The study included analysis of the collection by subject categories, collection use by reference, circulation and in-house study. This supply/demand analysis provided data for use with the ALA/RTSD Guidelines for Collection Development. The result was a plan for joint acquisition of materials and a schedule of purchases for stressed subject categories for the subsequent five-year period. A category was considered stressed if proportional demand exceeded proportional supply determined in the collection and use analyses. The model developed is applicable in any library.     

Collection development and acquisitions in a changing university environment

Fondren Library at Rice University has reorganized and combined the library public services staff with the public services staff of the computer center. This reorganization was the result of several challenges at the university: the increasing use of computing in instruction, the rise in support questions for delivering information to the desktop, and the inability to add staff lines. These changes have affected the ways in which collection development is done, expanding the roles of selectors and cutting into their time. The line between public service and collection development has blurred. Some of the time constraints have affected procedures used in acquisitions.     

Collection development education: An Australian perspective

This paper describes efforts by the library profession in Australia to improve the teaching of collection development, especially attempts to achieve greater articulation between professional practice and professional education at university level. It surveys a number of important seminars and workshops, reviews a set of educational guidelines, and offers as a case study the curricular response of a specific library school (School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt University—Riverina) to professional concerns regarding collection development education.     

Fourth interagency conference on public access: Summary report

This article summarizes the Fourth Interagency Conference on Public Access, which was held in Reston, Virginia, on April 26, 1993. The all-day session focused on issues the subgroups identified in their deliberations, a revised policy framework document incorporating these policy issues, and locator systems.
