Intelligence is often conceptualized as concerned with coping with novelty, adapting to change, and the like: with ‘thinking’ rather than ‘knowing’. Highly intelligent people would be expected to adapt more effectively to unexpected changes. Using the method of ‘mental chronometry’, the performance of 72 seventh graders on a computer controlled reaction time experiment was measured and results compared with Raven's Matrioes IQs. The children with higher IQs were faster, more stable and more accurate in their reactions. Nonetheless, there was no simple, general tendency for children with higher IQs, to deal more effectively with change — rather, the necessity to perform additional stages of information processing seems to be less harmful for intelligent than less intelligent people.

In this paper some of the fantasies that arise around the role of the counsellor in schools and how these fantasies, being a measure of the psychic health of the school, impact upon both the referral procedure and the counselling process, are discussed. Illustrated by case studies, ways in which teacher and counsellor are able to combine therapeutic and educational skills to challenge these fantasies and so more efficiently tackle emotionally based learning difficulties are considered. The title refers to the case of a 7 year old boy whose failure to make academic progress could be understood as an emotional refusal to take on further responsibilities of a premature adulthood. 相似文献

Successful educational outreach to address the informational needs of African American and rural families dealing with dementia requires a concerted strategy that fosters trust and conveys a genuine commitment to the targeted communities. The Families Who Care project formed a partnership that included majority and minority institutions of higher education, state and local human services organizations, and two chapters of the Alzheimer's Association. These advisory groups were asked to identify the educational needs of family caregivers and guide the implementation of a train-the-trainer effort in Virginia. The results of strategic planning sessions are detailed, and analyses of evaluation data point to racial and cultural differences in the project's effect on participating family caregivers. Conclusions support increasing the availability of cultural competence training for those who provide services to diverse caregiving families. elders and their families and communities through the development and dissemination of culturally relevant materials emphasizing both the established facts about {Alzheimer's disease and related disorders} and the efficacy of seeking treatment''(Advisory Panel on Alzheimer's Disease, 1992, p. 50).
