A Slip of Paper

一、故事内容 It＇s a sunny day. A little lizard walks on the grass. While he is walking, he finds a slip of paper. It says, ＂The snake is coming!＂ The lizard is very afraid. He cries. There are three frogs. They are dancing in the pond. They hear the lizard crying and jump to him. They look at the paper and say, ＂Don＇t be afraid! Look, this is a slip of paper, not the whole paper! There must be another slip of paper.＂     

A he or a she

A woman is sitting person beside her, ＂Oh, says, ＂Oh, no, she＇s on a bench in the park. She says to the look! That boy is so lovely.＂ The person my daughter!＂ The woman says with a smile, ＂Sorry! I don＇t know you are her mother.＂ ＂No, I＇m her father.＂     

The Effect of Culture Integrated Language Courses on Foreign Language Education

When examined carefully, it is seen that there is not an available and detailed cttrriculum designed for the aim of foreign language teaching with integrated cultural items of the target language in the programs of the schools under authority of the Ministry of Education and Turkish higher education institutions. In recent years, the specialists have an agreement on the issue that foreign language instruction should be carried out by the means of target language＇s history, literature, geography and also its social characteristics. The idiom ＂it＇s raining cats and dogs＂ can be misinterpreted by a Turkish student without the knowledge of this idiom＇s story in English history as ＂Cats and dogs are pouring down from the sky＂. An important French architectural building ＂Saint Mary Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris＂ can be misunderstood as ＂Our Parisian Woman＂ by a student who is unfamiliar with French culture. Both examples show that encountered foreign words and phrases can be misunderstood and mostly these words are perceived and interpreted according to learners＇ own cultural figures. The aims of this study are to show the significance of culture-based foreign language courses and to make a contribution to the literature by regarding the views of researchers beheving that culture and language are inseparable concepts. In this context, Erzincan University French Language Teaching Department students＇ opinions on the relation between culture and language learning were received with the application of qualitative structured written response method. Then, document analysis of written comments was evaluated. Consequently, the analysis on the participants＇ written comments showed that a culture integrated foreign language course can make positive contributions to students＇ learning, language learning process and learning environment.

Yes, you guessed it-we are going to talk about ＂table manners＂ Eating in a restaurant is a very enjoyable experience when you know what to expect and what you are expected of as a guest. In western culture, dinner is the most important meal of the day, so we＇ll talk about having dinner in a restaurant in America.

I＇ve lost my appetite.＂If you＇re a ＂bundle of nerves＂, you＇ re very nervous or anxious, ＂1 was a bundle of nerves after watching the horror film.＂If you＇re ＂in good shape＂, you＇ re physically strong and healthy. ＂My grandma is 92 but she＇s still in great shape.＂

A painkiller is a drug which reduces or stops physical pain. ＂1 took a couple of painkillers to stop the terrible pain in my head.＂If you ＂sprain＂ your ankle （for example）, you accidentally damage it by twisting it violently. ＂1 sprained my ankle when I was playing basketball.＂     

On Teachers＇ Day

It was the Teachers＇ Day, would do for our English teacher last Wednesday. Before it came, we were thinking what we and what present we would give her on that day. Wu Juan said, ＂Let＇s give our teacher a surprise.＂ ＂What surprise？＂ we asked. She went on, ＂Every day before the class, one of us will give a weather and news report. On that day, the reporter will give the English teacher a card and a bottle of pure drink water. Water is pure and clean, just like our love to our teacher. Water is also useful to the teacher. She talks a lot in class.＂ ＂That＇s a good idea,＂ we said happily.     

Defining parental involvement： The Israeli case

During the past decade, Israeli parents declared their rights to be involved in their children＇s education. The term used is ＂parental involvement＂, but there is no real agreement on the definition of the term. This paper describes the different opinions and approaches of parents, teachers, students, principals and decision makers, as found and described by Israeli researchers. The development, definitions and boundaries of the term are introduced. Even though the research in Israel is on a Hebrew term and this discussion is in English, the processes involved translate well, as these processes are in a well developed country, based on democracy and Western culture and an education system established under the British Mandate with its historical traces.     

HUMOROUS STORIES

Mrs Williams loved flowers and had a small but beautiful garden. In the summer, her roses （玫瑰花） were always the best in her streel. One summer afternoon her bell rang, and when she went to the front door, she saw a small boy outside. He was about eight years old, and was holding a big bunch of beautiful roses in his hand. ＂I＇m selling roses,＂ he said. ＂Do you want any？ They are quite cheap. One shilling for a big bunctl. They are fresh. I pieked them this afternoon.＂     

The rapid structured literature review as a research strategy

A diversity of sources of literature encompassed by the management disciplines appears to result in a growing need for a systematic methodology to map the territory of management theory. As such, when scoping out a study, structured literature review （SLR） can be considered as a means by which any critical, central literature might be considered. However, there is little guidance, or evidence, of this being undertaken for the purposes of small scale projects such as undergraduate or masters＇ dissertations. This paper reports four case studies of master＇s degree students following management programmes of undertaking a structured literature review （SLR） and the issues and problems they had to encounter during their journey. The findings from the case studies suggest that in terms of time to complete and the volume of output required in terms of word count, Tranfield, et al＇s （2003） approach to SLR＇s, whilst suited to doctoral level research is not appropriate generally when dealing with undergraduate and masters research projects. Therefore, this paper provides accounts of the experiences of four students who undertook SLR for their undergraduate or master＇s degree dissertation. The paper identifies that these students had to deal with a new set of conceptual problems relating to this ＂unorthodox＂ approach to a postgraduate research dissertation in coming to terms with new paradigms of enquiry that are not normally taught as part of a traditional research methods course. This was despite gaining a greater depth of insight into the subject area through a more rigorous and structured manner. The paper presents alternative remedies by way of a rapid structured literature review （RSLR） model. This would appear to be more appropriate to the conducting of small scale literature based research projects when used with undergraduate and master＇s degree students than SLR identified for other research activities.
