Managing personal human capital for professional excellence: an attempt to design a practical methodology

Within the context of the knowledge-based economy, individuals increasingly control their own development, careers and destinies, rather than the organisations that employ them. Work drawing on the new career orientations has been mostly conceptual rather than empirical. The existing literature focuses mainly on explaining the conditions under which new career orientations emerge and the changes these can bring to the lives of individuals. However, we found that there is no practical methodology to help individuals face the challenges of the future in a proactive manner. The aim of this paper is to develop a practical methodology (the PHCN – Personal Human Capital Navigator) that helps individuals to systematically manage their personal human capital so they can achieve their strategic objectives and outstanding results.

Explaining the universe: Herbert Spencer's attempt to synthesize political and evolutionary ideas

Herbert Spencer's evolutionary ideas related not just to the biological world but to the universe and everything in it. Human societies were also viewed through his evolutionary lens so that Spencer's evolutionary and political ideas are inextricably entwined. This essay looks at some of Spencer's ideas and attempts to locate them in the social and intellectual context of his youth. It also speculates on the rise and fall of Spencer's reputation.     

An electron and X-ray diffraction study of the grain boundary substance in cadmium

The grain boundary material in commercial cadmiums was isolated by dissolving laminae of cadmium in ammonium nitrate solution, the boundary substance remaining as insoluble films. Electron diffraction patterns were made of such films using 40 to 50 kilovolt electrons and X-Ray diffraction patterns were obtained of powders of these films employing copper K_α radiation. Guided by a knowledge of the elements present as indicated by a spectrographic analysis, the diffraction patterns were identified as belonging to the compounds cadmium carbonate and basic lead carbonate. It is possible that these carbonates did not exist in the metal, but were converted from oxides in the metal during dissolution of the laminae.
