The UK edition of The Little Red Schoolbook: a paper tiger reflects

This paper concerns The Little Red Schoolbook, an English translation of the Danish book Den lille røde bog fur skoleelever. After the book's publication in the UK, opponents were successful in pressing for its publisher's prosecution. The ensuing trial led to its withdrawal and its bowdlerisation. It is argued that the work played some part in changing social and sexual mores and sex education practice in the UK, being, in effect, the Urtext of the ‘harm reduction approach’.

“狮和虎”的英汉隐喻认知对比研究

根据莱考夫和约翰逊的概念隐喻理论和意象图式理论,运用英汉语中＂狮子和老虎＂的相关语义拓展语料,对其图式映射进行了分析和对比。研究结果表明：＂许多抽象概念结构部分源起于意象图式结构,抽象思维在一定程度上是隐喻思维＂。     

Shadow education in the service of tiger parenting: Strategies used by middle-class families in China

Parents in many cultures invest significant proportions of household incomes in the so-called shadow education system of private supplementary tutoring. Parts of the literature attribute intensive tutoring to East Asian cultural traditions and to so-called tiger parenting. Based on a mixed-methods study in Shanghai, this article examines tiger parenting through a socio-economic lens to show the roles of shadow education in achieving parental goals. The study shows that tiger parenting is most evident in middle-class families. In order to transmit or increase social advantages inter-generationally, such parents use private tutoring to prepare their children for successful academic trajectories in mainstream education. The strategy is driven by anxieties related to social status in the rapidly changing risk economy. Shadow education has provided parents with new means to increase family cultural capital which not only facilitates school performance but also reinforces class dispositions. The study highlights the importance of understanding tiger parenting in the culture of class, in addition to other cultural factors. It challenges the simplistic attribution of tiger parenting to Confucianism by revealing dimensions that run counter to the Confucian conception and tradition of parenting. It also extends the conceptualization of family cultural capital by unpacking the processes of tutoring as externalized parenting in the era of global expansion of shadow education.     

Changes in oviduct structure in the black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, during ovarian maturation

Objective: To examine the structure of the oviduct of the shrimp Penaeus monodon. Methods: The oviducts of P. monodon with three different major groups of ovarian development (Group (Gr.) 1: Stages I & V; Gr. 2: Stages II & III; and Gr. 3: Stage IV) were examined by light, transmission electron, and scanning electron microscopies, respectively. Results: The epithelium of the oviduct in Gr. 1 was composed of tall simple columnar cells with their basal nuclei located on the basement membrane and its thick collagen fibers. In Gr. 2, the oviduct seemed to produce some substances and their epithelial cells became transitional with centrally located nuclei and formed some vacuoles. Obviously, the epithelial cells in Gr. 3 (at Stage IV) were disorganized, disrupted, and shed accumulated spherical secretory substances including some cellular contents into the lumen. Conclusions: The structural changes of the P. monodon oviduct were related to ovarian maturation stages (Grs. 1–3). Prior to spawning, only the oviduct epithelium at ovary Stage IV produced and secreted a number of spherical secretion substances into the lumen. These substances may act as the oviductal lubricants to facilitate the spawning process.     

Two daddy tigers and a baby tiger: promoting understandings about same gender parented families using picture books

There is a small body of work examining how picture books can be used with young children and their families to develop understandings of contemporary issues including diversity and practices towards inclusion. This article describes a study in one New Zealand kindergarten that explored teachers’ interpretations of children’s responses to a selection of picture books featuring same gender parented families. The research sought to go beyond traditional understandings of families and the dominant discourse of heteronormativity. Findings show that despite children reportedly being open to the possibilities of non-traditional families in their setting, and their play, teachers appeared hesitant to ask probing questions or fully engage with children’s thinking, or their own, to explore understandings in this area. Nevertheless, this research demonstrates that taking tentative steps towards making an alternative discourse available through the proactive use of curriculum resources does not have to be ‘difficult’ or ‘dangerous’. In inclusive educational settings, lesbian and gay headed families can be affirmed, and children can be supported to construct understandings about ‘family’ outside of normative boundaries.

The MOOC and the Multitude

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) take university lectures and other educational materials and make them available for free as online “courses.” Liberal and neoliberal MOOC supporters laud these courses for opening up education to the world while incorporating market dynamics to improve quality and drive down costs. Skeptics claim MOOCs are a bald attempt to privatize higher learning, thus creating an apartheid educational system with traditional universities serving the wealthy while everyone else is left with cut‐rate online learning. This essay draws on the political theory of autonomist Marxism, arguing that MOOCs are capital's defensive reaction to the threats of resistant universities on one side, and unmanageable Internet‐based learning on the other. It then looks at which MOOC designs would support education for the “multitude,” which is the term used by autonomist Marxism to describe an autonomous, diverse, networked political body.
