Witchcraft in the Early Modern Isle of Man

ABSTRACT

This article examines evidence relating to witchcraft beliefs and official attitudes to witchcraft in the Isle of Man during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is based mainly on court records, and above all those of the Manx ecclesiastical courts. It demonstrates that there was a rich popular culture relating to witchcraft on the island, with a number of individualistic features. It places Manx witchcraft beliefs in relation to two other phenomena that were central to the island's popular culture: fairy beliefs and the belief in the efficacy of the curse. It also demonstrates that the island's authorities maintained a relatively low-keyed approach to witchcraft (only two people are known to have been executed as witches in the island), treating it as a sign of popular ignorance and a regrettable source of neighbourly disputes rather than as a satanic heresy.     

Defining Early Modern Automobility

ABSTRACT

Automobility lies at the heart of contemporary analysis of the social relations of mobility. Thus far, however, it lacks a history. This article seeks to rectify that omission by interrogating the road traffic accident crisis which afflicted Manchester in the early years of the Second World War. The article proposes a provisional chronology for automobility in twentieth-century Britain: a lengthy phase between 1920 and 1970, dominated by the interests of private motorists, and a modern sub-period between 1970 and the near present. The latter era witnessed a gradual, and then an increasingly rapid, movement towards meeting the needs of non-drivers.

近代四川城乡关系析论

在近代的四川地区，发达的农业和富饶的乡村经济促进了城市的重建和发展。近代以后，城市在城乡对立关系中逐渐占据了统治地位，开始了城市统治乡村的时期。城市带动乡村一同发展，但由于四川城市的发展十分缓慢，城市对农村的带动效应十分有限；与此同时，由于四川地区农村自然经济解体水平的低下及农村经济的萧条，使乡村日益成为城市发展的桎梏，阻碍着城市的进一步发展。近代四川城乡之间的这种非良性互动关系，成为这一区域发展严重滞后的主要原因之一。
