Given the continued issue of student retention for online classes, past research has suggested several “retention strategies” focused on engaging students as a way to reduce their withdrawal rate from these classes. However, a recent study testing the effects of these strategies on retention in online undergraduate business courses (Leeds et al., Int J Manage Educ 7(1/2), 2013) did not show empirical support for the effectiveness of such strategies. Taking an alternative approach that focuses on individual characteristics of students, this study takes a broader view and examines previous research literature on traditional face-to-face classes to determine how individual characteristics of students may be associated with the likelihood of withdrawal from online classes. Using a sample of undergraduate students (n = 2,314) from a large state university, results from this study identified prior performance in college classes (cumulative GPA) and class standing (senior vs. non-senior) as significant student characteristics related to student retention in online classes for all students. Other factors significantly related to retention rates for students with certain characteristics or within certain majors include previous withdrawal from online courses, gender, and receipt of academic loans.  相似文献

This study compares the impact of timing of registration on the student learning outcomes of students taking courses at three rural community colleges in the southeastern U.S. during the school years 2001–2003. Findings from this study indicate that early registration has a positive influence on students' grades and course completion rates. Also contributing to differences in student outcomes were student race, Pell Grant status, gender, program of study, and age.  相似文献

Hispanics face multiple barriers to academic achievement. This study measured learning in an undergraduate criminal justice program at an Hispanic Serving Institution bordering Mexico. We estimated the average gains students achieved across core content areas using a technique that can be used by other faculty as part of program assessment. The majority of participants were Hispanic first-generation college students. An independent samples t-test was used to examine differences between freshman- and senior-level students, and the Lovett/Johnson model (2012) model was used to measure student gains using regression analysis. Results indicated that seniors showed meaningful gains at every level.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the mentorship experiences of Black student athletes attending undergraduate programs at a Predominantly White Institution in Higher Education (PWI-HE). The research site for this study was a co-educational public research institution (PWI-HE) with an approximate enrollment of 45,000 students. A total of six Black student athletes (five African American and one Jamaican) agreed to participate in this study. Four major interrelated and complex themes emerged from the data analyses. These themes were: (a) mentoring study habits and routines, (b) mentoring academic schedule and time management, (c) personal development within an isolated environment, and (d) family members’ support and encouragements. To better support Black student athletes at PWI-HEs, athletic department administrators, coaches, faculty, and all students should be encouraged to respect, value, and embrace the racial identities, origins, languages, and cultures of the student athletes that are being mentored.  相似文献

Precollege Initiative for Minorities in Engineering (PRIME) is a precollege program designed to encourage African American college-bound high school graduates to pursue engineering as a career. The Tennessee Technological University program serves as a transition from high school to college life. Components of the program involve academic courses in mathematics and introductory engineering, seminars, tours, and tutorial periods. The key component of the PRIME program involves the use of undergraduate engineering students as mentors and role models for the participating students. Abstract

This study examined verbal interruptions of eight role groups of third grade students when responding to or initiating talk with teachers. Attention was also given students interrupting their classmates. Data were collected from ten classrooms-245 heterogeneously grouped students-using the Feshbach Situation Test and Flanders Interaction Analysis. Teachers and Students were found to use interruptions differently with the Active, Independent, Assertive; Passive, Dependent, Acquiescent; Flexible, Nonconforming, Untidy; and Rigid, Conforming, Orderly. It was also found that the amount of time used by students initiating talk before interruption was different.  相似文献

随着远程教育的不断发展,对学习支持服务的研究已经成为当前远程教育领域探讨的一个热点问题。实践证明,良好的学习支持服务是保障现代远程教育质量的一个重要内容。国内外学者提出:学习支持服务包括学术性和非学术性两个方面,学术性学习支持服务注重认知、智力、知识等方面的支持,非学术性学习支持服务偏重于情感和管理方面的支持。随着远程教育的发展,越来越多的学者意识到非学术性学习支持服务的重要性。本文通过问卷调查法、访谈法、现场观察法以及个案研究法等方法,分析了广州某大学网络教育学院非学术性学习支持服务的现状,总结不足,研究对策,探讨适合于我国现代远程教育的非学术性学习支持服务体系的策略。  相似文献

In this article, the authors discuss research findings of an evaluation of Web-based courses in which the researcher controlled for student input information-using Alexander Astin's (1993) Input-Environment-Outcome assessment model. Controlling for student characteristics decreased bias and minimized the chance of incorrectly attributing outcomes to the virtual environment. The results of this study support the view that students' satisfaction was influenced by the online environment and was not due to student characteristics.  相似文献

This study uses two national data sets to explore the relationship between faculty practices and student engagement. Our findings suggest that students report higher levels of engagement and learning at institutions where faculty members use active and collaborative learning techniques, engage students in experiences, emphasize higher-order cognitive activities in the classroom, interact with students, challenge students academically, and value enriching educational experiences.  相似文献
