For postsecondary students with disabilities influencing reading performance, printed class materials pose a substantial barrier and have a negative impact on academic achievement. Digital technologies offer alternative ways of accessing print materials for students with print‐related disabilities. Alternative media is a broad term that encompasses a variety of formats into which printed text is converted. Alternative media, together with assistive computer technologies designed to read aloud the text, provide a means to access textual information and bypass the difficult reading process. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of model programs and pertinent research on the use of alternative media by postsecondary students with print disabilities; we will identify promising practices for students whose disabilities negatively influence reading performance. 相似文献

This study examines the female postsecondary advantage in matriculation among Hispanic and white youth with the goal of exploring
whether social capital, in addition to academic performance and orientation, function similarly to help explain females’ higher
likelihood of college attendance for each group. Utilizing data from the Texas Higher Education Opportunity Project (THEOP),
results indicate that girls’ higher academic performance in high school is an important factor behind their subsequent gender
advantage in 4-year college attendance, particularly for Hispanic students. Additionally, compared to their co-ethnic male
peers, Hispanic and white girls have greater levels of social capital, such as more academically-focused friendship groups
in high school, that are associated with higher rates of college attendance. However, girls’ greater frequency of discussion
with high school counselors about college appears to contribute to the female advantage in matriculation only for Hispanic
students. For both groups, the analyses suggest that all of the factors considered explain substantially less of the female
advantage in 2-year college matriculation than they do for the female advantage in 4-year matriculation. In general, the results
underscore the need for more research considering the complex processes through which gender and race/ethnicity intersect
in shaping individuals’ paths to college. 相似文献

在使用社交媒体的人群中,大学生群体对社交媒体的多任务使用与其学业成绩之间有着怎样的内在关联属性,对其社会资本的积累产生怎样的影响是本文的研究问题所在。对研究问题的原因进行探索性分析,研究发现,出于学习或娱乐目的的社交媒体多任务使用对大学生的学业成绩呈现负相关,不利于其学业成绩的提高,阻碍学习进程健康、科学开展,不利于其社会资本的正向积累。 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of an emerging technology called augmented reality to teach science vocabulary words to college students with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders. One student with autism and three students with an intellectual disability participated in a multiple probe across behaviors (i.e., acquisition of science vocabulary words) design. Data were collected on each student's ability to define and label three sets of science vocabulary words (i.e., bones, organs, and plant cells). The results indicate that all students acquired definition and labeling knowledge for the new science vocabulary terms. Results are discussed in the context of applying universal design principles with emerging technologies to create authentic opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders to learn science vocabulary. ABSTRACT Previous research on gender and coping has led lo a debate about whether a dispositional or a siluational perspective accounts lor the coping strategies used by females and males. In this study, methodology was used to investigate the coping responses of students within the context of perceived demands throughout their first year postsecondary experience. While academic demands remained central in the experience of all students, females had more relationship-based demands and demonstrated a wider repertoire of coping strategies in comparison to male students. Abstract This study explored the effects of an intensive, service learning course on the perceived self-efficacy of participating MSW students. A self-efficacy scale was developed following Bandura's (1977) model, based on the goals and objectives of the MSW program and was administered pre and post. The findings indicated a statistically significant increase in perceived self-efficacy (p< .001) following completion of the course. In addition, the students demonstrated significant increases in self-efficacy related to mezzo (p< .001) and macro-level skills (p< .001). These results suggest that service learning, underutilized in social work education, may be an effective learning approach in master's level programs. 相似文献

对我省7所高校1139名大学生的调查表明,统计差异均非常显著,较为突出地表现为强迫症状、人际关系、忧郁,学校间差异显著,性别分析和对师范生的分年级研究表明,主观的身体不适感以及焦虑的其他躯体表现、精神病性得分也较高,反映为大学生人格障碍的发展先兆。应多因素多管齐下,采用教育模式,减少应激源,加强理解与有效管理,净化、优化成长育人环境,同时加强教师效能研究培训,改善大学生心理问题,培育其健康心理。 相似文献
