Disrupting a learning environment for promotion of geometry teaching

Creating a classroom learning environment that is suitably designed for promotion of learners’ performance in geometry, a branch of mathematics that addresses spatial sense and geometric reasoning, is a daunting task. This article focuses on how grade 8 teachers’ action learning changed the learning environment for the promotion of geometry teaching. This was an exploratory study in which a sample of 13 grade 8 mathematics teachers from the rural schools of a district in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa participated in a project aimed at creating mathematical learning environments through action learning while supporting and promoting the teaching of geometry. The study was qualitative and data was collected using questionnaires, classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the teachers on a participatory action research conducted in two cycles. Results indicated that 92% of teachers changed their classroom environments by modifying instructional strategies, learner -interactions, and engagements, but could not change how they managed the classrooms due to some factors related to power dynamics andthe education policy. It is recommended that teachers be workshopped on modifying their classroom learning environments while they undergo learning in action on the promotion of teaching and learning geometry in their school defining contexts.

都说艺术作品是源于生活又高于生活的,许多英国的文学作品中都细腻的、多角度的描绘了主人公的乡村生活经历,让读者透过对主人公乡村生活的阅读了解到了作品所在时期的社会和文化生活特点。本文旨在研究英国文学作品中对乡村生活环境描写的特点,分析其选取特点以及作者如何通过对乡村自然景色的描写来呈现时代特点和塑造人物形象,通过对英国文学作品中对乡村自然环境描写的学习,希望能够对中国文学作品创作起到某些借鉴作用。     

论培养数学学习兴趣促进学生能力发展

小学高年级随着数学知识难度的增加,知识量也逐渐增加,数学知识体系之间形成了很强的关性联,因此学生的数学学习兴趣显得尤为重要。教师在教学中可以融入数学游戏活动,注重生活化数学教学,注重创设良好的学习环境,切实提高学生的学习热情。     

Parents supporting learning: a non-intensive intervention supporting literacy and numeracy in the home learning environment

In Australia, emphasis in early childhood education policy is placed on the importance of the role of the family as a child's first educator, and finding effective ways to raise the effectiveness of parents in supporting children's learning, development and well-being. International studies demonstrate that the home learning environment (HLE) provided by parents is closely associated with children's cognitive outcomes: literacy activities at home are likely to predict children's literacy abilities and numeracy activities at home are likely to predict children's numeracy abilities. However, studies focusing on building the capacity of primary caregivers to increase informal learning opportunities, such as enhancing children's literacy and numeracy learning in the HLE, have rarely been the focus of research. This study uses a sample of 113 four-year-old children to explore the association of specific aspects of the HLE with different child outcomes while controlling for child and family characteristics. In addition, a non-intensive, yet purposeful and systematic intervention to draw parents’ attention to the principles of dialogic reading and the principles of counting was introduced. Study findings suggest that parents responded positively to this approach, and that literacy and numeracy aspects of the HLE were specific predictors for children's numeracy and literacy competencies.

Development of a support environment for first year students taking materials science/engineering

This paper is based on the experience acquired in teaching materials science/engineering to first year university students. It has been observed that students struggle with some of the fundamental materials concepts addressed in the module/course. This applies to delivered lectures but extends to the incorporation of tutorial sessions provided after lectures. Moreover, when students miss a lecture or seminar the acquisition and application of knowledge and concepts becomes problematic. Consequently, or perhaps inevitably, these students perform poorly in their assessments and their motivation for the subject suffers. A careful analysis of this situation and of the nature of interaction and engagement was performed to gain an insight into the reasons for this lack of performance. A common factor is that students do not dedicate sufficient time for reading and consolidation using the chapters/sections prescribed after each topic. They also do not attempt solving tutorial problems outside the formal contact hours. This reflection and personal evaluation is difficult to administer, resource intensive and yet potentially enables each student to monitor and evaluate their own learning and understanding. A multimedia learning technology‐based environment was created in which students could engage. This was located within the University of Wolverhampton Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) called WOLF. The students were able to progress independently but with access to tutor and peer support, help and advice. The use of non‐text animations and structures was used and seen as fundamental by the students in enhancing the taught course and in developing a deeper understanding of complex atomic and crystal structures.

学生习作能力的培养一直以来被看成是课堂教学的任务,对移民英国的三名中国儿童的海外读写经历研究发现,儿童读写能力形成的途径是多元的,非正式、非正规读写学习有效地支持正规读写学习,三种读写学习模式相互独立又密切相关。读写学习的目的不仅要帮助儿童培养读写能力,还要提升儿童的读写素质。

云计算提供可定制的计算资源服务特点与建构主义教学理念不谋而合,意味着云计算技术在教育领域将会有深入的应用。在分析云计算应用于教育领域优势的基础上,结合建构主义理论,设计了一种基于云计算的多媒体教学环境,该教学环境整合高校与教学有关的系统构成教学云服务平台,为教师、学生、教学支持者提供全方位的服务和管理功能,将有效增强师生交互,促进资源共享,提高教学智能化程度。
