The Lead-in in Learner-centered English Classroom Teaching

For many years,people have been exploring different kinds of teaching pattern of triggering the students’ interests in English and enhancing the efficiency of teaching and have been seeking different kinds of approaches of optimizing the process of class teaching.So many English class teaching methods such as five-step teaching method and task-based teaching method are put forward,but these methods pay more attention to imparting new knowledge to students and to training their ability of using English than to triggering their interests in English.This article try to solve this problem by exploring different ways of lead-in in English classroom teaching to arouse students’interests in English learning.     

On Reading-Based Writing Instruction Model

English writing is a complex integrative process of comprehensive skills.A host of students are still unable to write a coherent English paragraph after having learned English for many years at school.To help college students improve their writing competence is a great challenge facing the English teaching in China.Researches on writing teaching method abroad have experienced prosperity.In China,however,researches in this field are far behind.There is great need to search for more efficient writing instruction model so that it can serve well in Chinese context.Enlightened by Krashen’s input hypothesis and Swain’s output hypothesis,the writer put forward Reading-Based Writing Instruction Model.This paper aims to discuss the effectiveness of this model from the different perspectives.     

Implications of Output Hypothesis on College English Writing

With the reform of college English course,the objectives,philosophy and models of Chinese EFL teaching have been deeply changed.So college students are required to have higher language proficiency;it is also a challenge for the English teachers in our country.The traditional teaching mode should be changed.College English teaching is not only to input knowledge to students,but also to foster their skills on the application of knowledge,and excavate their potential in order to promote their language proficiency.Writing,as one of the efficient ways to measure students’comprehensive English ability,has attracted more attention in the field of English researches,which,however,got little improvement so far.What we can see from the requirements is that college students and teachers should put more attention on their output instead of input alone.Therefore,this paper intends to apply Swain’s "Output Hypothesis" to the college English teaching of non-English major students in China,and make some teaching suggestions based on the three functions of the "Output Hypothesis".     

Consideration on Vocational Students’ Participation in Class:With Special Reference to Task-based Approach and Traditional Method

This paper covers an experimental study on vocational students’ participation in the class under task-based approach and traditional grammar-translation teaching method.As vocational colleges in China have developed rapidly,teachers are still exploring and experimenting with different teaching approaches in order to find the suitable one(s).Using the theory of task-based approach,the grammartranslation method,the author conducts an experiment by recording.The following key issue has been addressed and some conclusive results have been made.The paper intends to find an answer to the following question:Under which teaching approach can students participate in the class more actively? Based on the above research work,the following result has been reached:Task-based approach can promote students’ mastering of vocabulary and grammar,and students participate in the class more actively.The author would like to share her experiences with others in pedagogical studies of teaching vocational college students English.     

Composition Templates in English Writing of the College Entrance Examination

In recent years,more and more students relay on universal composition templates.Students believe that the"universal composition template"can cope with all kinds of English tests.How the pros and cons of writing methods seem to put things right once and for all?How’s enlightening significance to English teaching?In this paper,based on the two language acquisition theory and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the composition template,some suggestion are given to the students to improve their English writing level.     

Action Research on Using Self-and Peer-assessment in Teaching of English Writing

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the perception of applying self-and peer-assessment in English writing,through an Action research process.The learning in the programme,the students have learnt translating Chinese into written English for first stage,and have learnt writing in English for second and third stage through self-and peer-assessment.The research result shows that the most students feel that the process of self-and peer-assessment are useful for improving their English writing skill and they feel that self-reflection and peer discussion around their English writing is helpful for promoting the development of self-and peer-assessment.Especially,key findings about four types of students are more important.Overall,based on student’s perception about using self-and peer-assessment,learning written in English is also an ongoing research,it can develop the ability of students’ ability to solve problems independently,and raise their language communicative competence gradually.     

Literature Review of Oral English Teaching

Under the present situations in China, more and more graduates with higher proficiency in oral English are required. However, the author learned that students in most universities are lack of this ability. It’s the urgent task for college English teachers to help students improve their oral English to the required level. The author of this paper will review the literature of foreign langue teaching in relation to oral English teaching in college, hence leading more English teachers to reflect on new and effective ways of oral English teaching.     

Intercultural Communication From an Interdisciplinary Perspective

The need for effective communication among the people of the world has never been more pressing than it is at the start of the 21 st century in this post-911 world. Recent breakthroughs in the fields of transportation, computing and telecommunications have combined to increase the ease and frequency of communication among members of different cultures. At the same time, developments in world politics have made the need for meaningful communication among different people a necessity for the survival of everyone on the planet. This paper describes a course that prepares students for global citizenship. The course helps students develop an informed understanding of global challenges and the skills to address those challenges. The paper offers specific teaching strategies and assignments that can be adapted to many disciplines.     

A Model of Teaching and Learning Online in Asian Context

Online teaching and learning practices in Asian universities are different from that in western universities. Western universities give emphasis on student-student interaction for learning. Online courses offered by most Asian universities are a kind of mixed mode that comprised simultaneous face-to-face tutorials and online interaction facility. In this situation most students use the online facility to collect resources and to contact their teachers. The quantity of student-student interaction was sporadic in many courses. So research is needed to improve the situation and create an environment for students where they can learn what peer group interaction is and practice it. This paper has presented for Asian universities. Possible barriers in teaching and learning have been considered to develop the model. a model of teaching and learning online situations in Asia and students＇abilities     

Towards an eclectic framework for teaching EFL writing in a Chinese context

The challenges of writing itself and lack of appropriate teaching methodology demotivate EFL （English as a Foreign Language） learners in some Chinese universities to write more, especially as the only incentive for students to write is the compulsory tests. The main objectives of this article are： （1） to discuss the background of the EFL learners in Chinese tertiary education and then to elaborate on their needs and problems for EFL writing; （2） to review the existing approaches to teaching writing; and （3） to propose and justify an integrated model on the basis of these approaches for teaching EFL writing in the Chinese context.     

Intercultural Communication Competence in English Teaching

With the development of globalization,more and more people have been realizing the importance of intercultural communication.Thus,people pay more attention to the cultivation of intercultural communication competence to expect a broaden horizon.It is important to blend the cultivation of intercultural communication competence into English teaching.Meanwhile,the main aim of English teaching is to develop students’intercultural communication competence.To achieve this,the paper is going to analyze the reasons for the failure of some intercultural communication and propose some practical suggestions on how to adapt to different situations from the teaching aspect.     

Investigation and analysis of current writing teaching mode among English majors in normal universities in China

This paper has made an investigation on the current writing teaching mode among English majors in normal universities in China, by means of questionnaire, interview and class observation. The study finds out that the current writing teaching mode is not purely product approach or process approach. In fact, the two approaches to writing co-exist in today＇s English writing teaching, with product approach to writing enjoying a relatively dominant place. Problems are discovered of this writing teaching mode, such as students＇ inactive involvement in the class. Then, this paper focuses on the teachers and students to find out the reasons. At last, the author proposes MAP-CORE framework for English writing class.     

A Study on the Effects of Online Interaction for the EFL Learners’ Writing Motivation

With the rapid development of information technology, how to utilize the Web in the field of language teaching has become a heated issue in the foreign language teaching reform around the whole world. For so many years, during the teachercentered English writing teaching process, students have no choice but to accept model essays and recite the well-performed sentences and structures. it is hard for teachers and students to conduct an effective interaction, which leads to students’ lacking of writing motivations. The author conducted the experiment with QQ group as a medium, and analyzed the results of the experiment among 66 students from Wuhan University, in order to study how to make good use of the network environment to promote the communication and interaction between students, and then enhance their writing motivation. The experimental data and discussions show that online interaction can motivate students to complete writing tasks, especially enhance their instrumental achievement and intrinsic motivation.     

An Introduction to Interactive Teaching Mode and Its Implication in College English Writing Class

Interactive teaching mode refers to a dynamic process of teaching in which teachers and students and teaching materials will affect each other. It offers language learners a chance to communicate and exchange information frequently. Group cooperative leaning has long been considered to be one of the most important forms of the interactive teaching mode. English writing,one of the essential English language skills, is an integral part of college English teaching. The high or low level of English writing is a comprehensive reflection of various abilities. This paper aims to explore the application of the interactive teaching model in college English writing class in order to improve students’ motivation and ability of English writing, thus can provide an effective way of learning to the current college English writing class.     

A Study of Non-English Majors’Errors in English Writing

Researchers in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) have long held the interest towards the teaching of college English writing. Their research topics, range from how to improve college students’ability to write with English as their second language, to how to correct their wrong expressions in their writing. This article mainly aims at exploring college students’ various writing errors and mistakes,trying to provide some hints for college students and teachers about English writing. Such studies are abundant.     

Cultivating Students' Cultural Awareness in Foreign Language Teaching

Many foreign language teachers are often wondering why their students cannot avoid some mistakes in their writing assignment and oral presentations though the grammatical rules and phrases are quite familiar to them. On the other hand students also complain about the boredom of learning English."What is the use of learning English besides taking exams?"they often ask. In this paper the author is going to discuss language learning and teaching from the cultural perspective. By discussing the importance of culture teaching, the author intends to help both the teachers and the students to get out of their bewilderment. Some useful suggestions will be shared at the end of the paper, aiming to offer some practical and concrete guidance to both the students and my co-workers.     

A Case Study of Cooperation between Reading and Writing

The current study is concerned with the integration of English reading and writing in a program which is delivered jointly by Henan University(HU) in Kaifeng and Victoria University(VU) in Melbourne.Currently,English writing and reading have irrelevant teaching contents.In order to make better use the Chinese and Australian teachers’ English expertise to enhance students’ English proficiency in the joint program,VU and HU initiated this case study of coordination and cooperation at a curriculum and delivery planning level for reading and writing.By analyzing research data,this paper aims to measure the effectiveness of integration of writing and reading,to identify students’ acceptance of the collaboration of writing and reading and also to explore alternative ways of designing the teaching materials in an Australia-China English course.The main findings of the research project relate to student confidence,knowledge,motivation which are greatly improved when reading and writing materials are closely-related;trial groups’ writing proficiency showed twice greater improvement than that of control group;integration of reading and writing better uses Australian and Chinese teachers’ English expertise;over 90% of the students comment that the specially-designed materials are useful and would like to continue learning in this way if possible.     

Interlanguage Fossilization with Oral English Teaching of Growing Cad re Students in Military Academy

The fossilization of interlanguage has long been a universal problem in foreign language learning and teaching, thus winning the concerns of foreign teachers and researchers. The paper analyzes the causes of this phenomenon which is expected to be beneficial to oral English teaching of growing cadre students in military academy, and then gives some suggestions in their oral English teaching, combining with the characteristics of growing cadre students’ English learning.     

Teachers’Evaluation of Error Gravity in English Majors’Writing Class in Art Colleges

In the English writing class, teachers have to confront numerous and diverse errors in students’writings. They must decide which types of errors require the most attention. In this research, through the investigation of a group of English teachers’ evaluation of different types of errors selected from students’writings, it was found that these teachers paid more attention to local errors than global errors, which is different from native speakers’ evaluation of error gravity. Causes for this phenomenon as well as pedagogical implications are also discussed in this paper.     

Application of English cohesion theory in the teaching of writing to Chinese graduate students

The English cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan makes great contributions to the understanding of the coherence and cohesion of the English texts. It should be applicable in the teaching of English writing so as to improve the cohesion in the students＇ compositions. The present paper describes apractice of this order among non-major graduate students, and discusses its results. The conclusion is that teaching activities of this kind can indeed improve the cohesion in the students＇ compositions. Finally the paper raises a few concerning problems which remain to be further explored.
