Medical collections in public libraries of the United States: a brief historical study

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was not unusual for a public library in the United States to include a collection of medical books among its resources. The origin and development of these collections, the growth of the movement, and the factors which contributed to the eventual withdrawal of these collections from the public library are recounted here.     

Security and crime in health sciences libraries in the southern United States

Crime is a part of life that has become more evident in libraries through reports in journals, newspapers, television, and other media. As the result of a sharing session, a survey was conducted of the libraries composing the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association. This survey looked at the incidence of major and minor crimes in the libraries and their institutions; security measures, regulations, or policies that were in effect prior to these or having been initiated since; and the effect the crimes and/or security measures have had on the institution and its employees.     

Health science libraries in the United States: I. Overview of the post-World War II years

Data from three surveys of health sciences libraries in the United States (1969, 1973, and 1979) were analyzed within the context of scientific, technological, and sociopolitical developments. Findings included decrease in the number of separately administered libraries, growth of some, decline or discontinuation of others, and geographic movement. Overall, the aggregate resources are increasing, as is cooperation among libraries.

Medical school libraries in the United States and Canada built between 1961 and 1971.

Twenty-four medical school libraries in the United States and Canada build between 1961 and 1971 were surveyed by means of questionnaires and visits. Results indicated that half of these libraries will have reached maximum functional capacity approximately six years after they were moved into their new quarters. Space for technical processing is generally much less than is required. Special features and examples of effective planning are described, and problems in arrangement, traffic patterns for people and materials, and the lack of logical expansion space are discussed. Comparisons are made with a similar survey of twenty medical school libraries made in 1961.

以中美两国各10所著名医院为研究对象,采用链接分析方法,通过Altavista搜索引擎得到网站的相关链接指标数据,运用主成分分析法对链接数据进行处理,从而综合评价各家医院网站资源被利用情况。同时,运用T检验进行医院网站各链接指标的差异性分析,根据统计结果找出医院网站存在的问题,并提出相应对策和建议。     

Physical facilities of medical school libraries in the United States, 1966-1975: a statistical review.

This paper, based on information received from a questionnaire to which 107 of the present 114 medical school libraries in the U.S. responded, shows the vast growth and expansion of such libraries. The 86 libraries which have been built, expanded, under construction of planned during 1966-1975 represent the greatest expansion in the history of medical school libraries. This "decade of revolution" can be attributed to the evergrowing resources, primary users, and services discussed in this paper. The survey results can also be useful to those institutions planning or remodelling such library facilities in the near future.     

Hospital libraries: focal point in the continuing education crisis

The Proposed Requirements for Professional Libraries in Hospitals to be Licensed in the Commonweath of Pennsylvania are presented and discussed. Indication is given of current trends in the development of hospital libraries as the single most important factor in continuing medical education and as the least-developed factor.     

Selected Test Collections in the United States:

Although a literature search yields much data on validity, reliability and construction of educational and psychological tests, little information on test collection management in libraries is available. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign initiated a survey of selected test collections in order to verify that their practices conformed with those of other institutions. An attempt was also made to rank collections and compare staff and budget allocations. The fact that two other institutions were found during the distribution and compilation of the survey to be engaged in a similar activity indicates that there is currently great interest in the management of test collections in libraries.     

E-government research in the United States

The purpose of this exploratory study is to review scholarly publications and assess egovernment research efforts as a field of study specific to the United States e-government environment. Study results reveal that researchers who focus on the U.S. e-government environment assess specific e-government topics at the federal, state, and local levels; however, there are gaps in the research efforts by topic areas and across different levels of government, which indicate opportunities for future areas of research. Results also find that a multitude of methodology approaches are used to assess e-government. Issues, however, exist that include lack of or weak presentations of methodologies in publications, few studies include multi-method evaluation approaches for data collection and analysis efforts, and few studies take a theory-based approach to understanding the U.S. e-government environment.     

Teaching publishing in the United States

What must a college professor know and do in order to teach about the diverse and constantly changing publishing field? The author discusses some theoretical and practical ideas about teaching publishing, including (1) establishing an advisory board of industry leaders; (2) creating a comprehensive publishing curriculum that draws upon the academic resources of other departments and/or schools within a university; (3) recruiting, developing, and maintaining a faculty; (4) developing an effective internship and job placement program; (5) establishing and maintaining contacts with regional and national publishing trade associations; and (6) discussing the need for more scholarly studies on the eclectic international publishing industry.
