An Analysis of China’s Four Traditional Festivals from the Perspective of the Theory of Cultural Functions

This paper analyzes the cultural elements of China’s four traditional festivals from the perspective of the Theory of Cultural Functions, which presents in detail the forming of traditional festivals, varied festival traditions and good expectations held by people toward lives. This paper is also designed with the aim to further exert the functions of traditional Chinese festivals, which as a result, will contribute to the preservation of national characters and the inheritance of national spirits.     

A Study of Verbal Humor of Undergraduates from the Perspective of Co⁃operative Principle and Relevance Theory

Verbal humor has been widely studied from the perspective of the Cooperative Principle.The verbal humor of undergrad?uates,however,hasn’t been studied thoroughly.Corpus of verbal humor of undergraduates will be analyzed from the perspective of the Cooperative Principle and Relevance Theory.The analyses show that the pragmatic analysis of the verbal humor of the under?graduates can reveal humorous effects,which play an important role in their daily communication.     

The Study on Lin Yutang’s Translation from the Perspective of Aesthetics

Since the main purposes of translation lies in expressing to the target readers both the message and the aesthetic value of the source text and making the readers ideologically inspired and aesthetically entertained,Lin Yutang conclusively sum up that the aesthetic criteria in translation should be faithfulness,expressiveness and beauty throughout his translation practices.This thesis mainly focus on the aesthetic criteria of Lin’s translation as well as the aesthetic reproduction in his translation which illustrates the unity reached in Lin’s translation in terms of both the aesthetic features and the loyalty to the meaning.     

Early Childhood Intervention in China from the Families’ Perspective

Research highlights the importance of early childhood intervention (ECI) for children with disabilities, and there is an increasing interest in China with respect to research on ECI. However, little research exists exploring the experience of families of young children with disabilities receiving ECI services and supports in China. The purpose of this study was to understand the ECI experiences of families of such children. A qualitative research design was used, and data were collected through interviews with six families in southwest China. This study indicated that, although China has made some progress in ECI for young children with disabilities, progress in this area is still at an early stage of development. Many issues still need to be addressed, including knowledge about typical and atypical development, early identification, professional development, increased government investment, and better implementation of existing laws.

The discussions about cognition psychology in the field of second language acquisition(SLA) exert great influence on language teaching practice and theoretical research.Interface positions on the role of explicit and implicit knowledge in SLA have led to further exploration by different researchers.This paper,on the basis of previous studies,makes a brief review of the relation ship between implicit and explicit knowledge,focusing on the analysis of interface position and its role in grammar teaching and learning.     

Foregrounded Beauty: A Brief Analysis of Cummings’ Typical Poems from the Perspective of Stylistics

E. E. Cummings is one of the representatives of American modern experimental poets whose poems are well-known for the unique style. Cummings endeavors to make his poems be different from other poets’. He broke the traditional way of writing poems, invented in the changing of lines of the poem and the spelling of the words in the poem, thus to make his personal poem style distinctive. Therefore, standing on the stylistic point of view, this paper makes a brief analysis on Cummings’ typical poems from foregrounding perspective.

Amy Tan(1952-)is a female Chinese-American writer.As a famous figure equal to Maxine Hong Kingston,Toni Morrison etc.,Amy has become"another pioneer"among the minority American writers.The Bonesetter’s Daughter is another masterpiece after The Joy Luck Club,The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Hundred Secret Senses,which is published in 2001.The novel is about the life between the second-generation immigrant Ruth and her first-generation immigrant mother Luling.The stories in the novel are all narrated by female narrators.Through her novels,Amy Tan overthrows the traditional Chinese female images,shows rebel and fight of the female Chinese-Americans who are under the margin of a society dominated by patriarchy and full of racial discrimination and construct her own fictional authority.     

An Analysis of the Ballad of the Sad Café from the Perspective of Grei mas’Semiotic Square

Greimas’s Semiotic Square is a new approach in analyzing literary works.Based on Sassure and Jacnson’s claim on binary opposition,Gereimas extends it to four actants and adds contradictory relationships.By assign meanings to the four actants,an analysis of the complicated relationship between the roles in a text can be made and a revelation of the theme of the text can be realized.Previous studies of this novel take it as an excellent work revealing loneliness and isolation is thought to be the basic condition of human existence.Other study covers the effects of the unrequited love.Quiet differently,this paper tries to interpret this novel by Greimas’semiotic square and thereby revealing the widely accepted theme of this novel that isolation and loneliness is the final destiny of human being in modern society.

This study analyzes the the verbal humor in the movie series If You Are The One from the perspective of some pragmatic theories.The findings of the study provide explanations towards generative mechanism of humor,such as the violation of Cooperative Principle,avoiding face-threatening acts,and particularly,creatively reveal that special use of Politeness Principle can produce a humourous effect,too.     

An Analysis of Long Day’s Journey into Night from the Perspective of the Cooperative Principle

Eugene O’Neill,one of the essential writers of the 20th century,was hailed as the“American Shakespeare.”He enjoyed a high reputation in America owing to his special writing techniques.Long Day’s Journey into Night was his last play,which was an autobiographical play to some extent,and founded on his own authentic experience.The play told the story of an Irish immigrant family’s daily life from day to night.Among the studies at home and abroad,many discuss this play from a psychological perspective and Feminist perspective.The article,instead,gives an interpretation of this play according to Cooperative Principle.Through the analysis of their conversations,it points out what principles their communications violated so as to understand the implied meaning of their conversations.The thesis tries to study the conversations between Mary and other family members,and then demonstrate that Mary is the most tragic person in the family.
