A review of library literature shows a general trend of technical services in academic libraries to reorganize into teams. This paper analyzes the results of a survey conducted in 2010 in order to answer four research questions: how extensively technical services in academic libraries have moved into the use of teams in organizational structures; how extensively technical services in academic libraries have done training related to teams; what team characteristics are demonstrated by teams in technical services in academic libraries; and how the effectiveness of teams is perceived by staff and faculty who work in technical services in academic libraries.  相似文献

Changes in information technology, in institutional or societal imperatives, and in user expectations are forcing library administrators to re-examine not only the library's basic services but also the organizational structures which have been created over time to support those services. Organizational change-particularly structural change-is prescribed. The traditional separation of the two major divisions of libraries, technical services and public services, has often been the focus for discussions of library organizational change. Are libraries modifying their organizational structures? Are models evolving which may be adapted by other libraries? The author reports the results of a recent survey of organizational change in university libraries and describes the changes which are taking place. While the long-standing structures are still largely in place, new alignments of functions and non-traditional work unit groupings are becoming more commonplace. No matter how a given research library defines its future, collaboration, flexibility, and fluidity will be the key attributes that characterize its operations and services. (Woodsworth et al., 1989, p.138). Current library administrations should move quickly to flatten hierarchical structures. (Heim, 1989, p.199). Typically identified as the most desirable future is a scenario that includes a flexible organizations facilitating staff growth and increased contribution to the university missions. The title of this volume suggests that academic and research libraries should adopt a more "user-centered" approach in response to environmental trends and proposes a need for organizational change to arrive at a user-centered state. Other papers in the volume address specific trends and the responses—current or envisioned—of the library in an institution of higher education. This paper addresses the role of professional associations in the process of organizational change. It accepts as a given the assertion that organizational change is necessary and that user-centeredness is a desirable characteristic of libraries, of higher education institutions, and of associations.  相似文献

In today’s libraries, catalogers must often assume other roles. Because of outsourcing, shrinking staffs, expanded services, and shifting priorities, specialization in cataloging is frequently no longer an option. Taking on other types of responsibility can be quite daunting to those who have been in technical services for an entire career. This paper examines the benefits and challenges for a cataloger who is working in public services. It discusses what qualities a cataloger can bring to public services work along with the advantages for the cataloger in working with the public. Some survival strategies will be offered for the cataloger making the transition to public services work or working with multiple departmental assignments. The overall approach is positive, but realistic in the acknowledgment that this role change can be very demanding for catalogers.  相似文献

This paper looks at outsourcing library technical services primarily from the perspective of the relationship between outsourcing libraries and their suppliers. It first looks at why businesses outsource and how suppliers gain sufficient advantages to benefit those businesses. The author then extends these concepts to libraries and the booksellers who provide them with these services. Based upon business literature and practical experience, the author outlines some of the potential pitfalls in outsourcing arrangements and what can be done to minimize them. The author concludes with a call to temper enthusiasm for outsourcing in view of the sober realities of doing business in a complex, fast-changing environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Academic research libraries can employ several approaches to advance the institutional mission. First, libraries can shift from goals focused on collections and traditional library services and instead align with their campus academic plan and an emphasis on supporting the institution's strategic initiatives. A second approach is for libraries to modify their organizational structures from being function-based on the tasks that traditional libraries performed (e.g., public services, technical services, collection development) and move instead toward organizational units that directly support their university's missions (e.g., undergraduate education; graduate and professional education; research, scholarship, and creative activity; and public engagement). The key is to have library staff engaged in work that contributes to vital institutional outcomes such as student success and faculty research productivity. Academic research libraries should also continue to work towards an assessment program that demonstrates the value of the academic research library in providing quality services that advance the institutional mission.  相似文献

Despite successful application of organizational learning to enhance services in academic libraries, little is known about organizational learning in libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). A quantitative online survey, followed by qualitative interviews, served to assess and explore the use of organizational learning in libraries at FPCUs. Data reflected medium to high levels of organizational learning in the libraries studied, as well as a negative relationship between organizational learning and number of students enrolled. Common themes in the interview responses included external pressures from the FPCUs making it more difficult to implement organizational learning, and the importance of communication.  相似文献

Public libraries have a huge potential to be creators and facilitators of social innovation in communities and society. Qualitative research based on interviews with 27 librarians showed that social innovation in libraries can take the form of educational and cultural activities, leisure and networking activities and social support services. The main goal of the research was to find out what factors support and make these innovations difficult in public libraries. A four-layer model of barriers and stimulators for social innovation is presented, which includes structural, local, organizational and personnel levels. The model could serve to inform librarians, their stakeholders and governments about all levels of barriers and stimulators connected to innovation of library services and social re-positioning of public libraries in the future.  相似文献
